Chapter 49: A Midsummer what if
Notes:
The close of the what if!?
And that's all she wrote folks, I'll be gone for a month.
On with the show!
Harry Potter, age: 9
Harry stood in the silver cabin that belonged to the Hunters and Artemis, well, his mother, never before had any male demigod had ever stepped foot inside, let alone on the bottom step of the cabin, the last guy who did got turned into a Jackalope, or that's what Harry was told. But now he stood in the heart of the cabin with thirty-seven sets of curious eyes looking back at him, Harry shuffles in place, nervously looking back at all the girls in silver jackets. The cabin itself was big, but dominated by forty full-sized bunk beds that lined the walls in rows of twos with a single long row in the middle of them, hanging on the walls that were free from the beds were pelts of fur and scale from hunts long past, and some even looked older than the cabin. While the outside of the cabin was all silver, the inside was all dark wood set up like a log cabin, the bunk beds were made from a light tan wood left unstained while the bedding was all dark blues and silvers.
Harry didn't know what to do or even say to the other girls in the cabin, he knew a few of them, like Sophie, Brittany, Zoë, Atalanta, Anna, and Bella, the rest were polite but distant from him while they were at camp. Harry could understand why too and never went out of his way to bother the girls who were nice but wanted to be left alone, but now they ALL were looking at him like he was the most interesting thing in the world. So, Harry, not wanting to be rude raises his hand and waves at them before saying a quiet "Hello", none wave back or say hello in return. Harry hears Zoë sigh from behind him.
"Umm, Lieutenant?" One of the girls that Harry didn't know finally speaks up, "Is he the one we, ah, well, …felt?" She says, pausing for a moment trying to find the right words for it.
Zoë nods her head, "Yes, he is," she says, and as the other girl opens her mouth to say something Zoë raises her hand stopping the girl from speaking, "I'll explain everything here in a moment, I'm just waiting for Sophie and Atalanta to join us," the Lieutenant says, and some of the hunter's nod at her words, but most just keep looking at Harry, it was starting to make him feel uncomfortable.
They didn't have to wait long for Atalanta, only about two minutes after Zoë said something when the front door of the cabin opened, and Atalanta walked in and closed the door behind her. Harry immediately runs up to her, and without even thinking about it she reaches out and scoops him up in a hug before the ancient hunter turns to the Lieutenant, "How?" That is all the Lioness asks.
"You mean you didn't know?" Anna says from her bunk, looking down at Atalanta from the top, Atalanta shakes her head.
"No," Atalanta says, squeezing Harry closer, "I just thought he was a cute kid who was good with a bow, maybe a son of Apollo, not…" she trails off, the shock of it all still sinking in.
But before anyone could say anything else, a door to the back of the cabin opens up, and out walks Sophie with only a gray tee shirt and black boy shorts on as she was drying her hair with a towel. Atalanta immediately covers Harry's eyes before Zoë rounds on the mad Hunter.
"Sophie!" The lieutenant says, voice sharp and hard, "What did I tell you!? You were supposed to get dressed before leaving the showers," Zoë says with a growl.
"I am dressed! It's not like there's a boy in here to see me in my under-" but Sophie stops talking as soon as she removes the towel from her head and spots Harry, "Umm, why is the tike in the cabin?" Sophie asks, confused.
"Did you not feel Lady Artemis claiming Harry?" Zoë asks, sounding baffled.
"Zoë," Sophie says, wrapping the towel around her waist to cover herself in the presents of a male, "Imma be honest with you, some of those mushrooms we picked and dried were the very fun kind, and I'm feeling a lot of things right now," the mad hunter admits, "for your information, that shower was Amazing," she says with a goofy smile as Zoë facepalms and sighs.
Zoë Nightshade
It had taken the better part of an hour to explain that no, Lady Artemis didn't break her oath, that Harry was born from mortals and a ritual(with the odd question from the boy himself asking if his mother and father were drunks and drug addicts, the answer was no, which seemed to confuse the boy,) and the hunt was staying in camp for one more day. By the end, Zoë had a headache as the hunt settled in for one more day at camp, after dinner, Lady Artemis still hadn't shown up, possibly taking her time to check in on her temple on Olympus and with Daphnis.
But when it came time for the hunt to bunk down for the night, the question of where the boy would sleep came up, some of her sisters had the idea to hang a hammock for the boy or another hunter, the boy himself, after getting what little he owned from the Hermes cabin, had said he didn't mind sleeping on the floor while holding up his sleeping bag. The argument ended when Atalanta walked up to Harry, picking him up, and saying "dibs" before crawling into bed with the boy wrapped up in his own sleeping bag; Zoë had gotten a chuckle out of that one. Zoë was awakened in the middle of the night by movement in the cabin, picking her head off her pillow and looking around, she finds the source of the disturbance. Lady Artemis standing beside Atalanta's bed looking down at the boy with an unreadable face.
Zoë leaves her bed and approaches her Lady, "My Lady," she greets her, Artemis not moving from looking down on the snuggling forms of Atalanta and Harry, "How did the meeting with Lord Zeus go?" Zoë asks, and watches as Artemis' face twists in rage.
"He tried to have the boy killed," Artemis says in a soft growl that makes Zoë take a small step back, "He had called a vote between all the Olympians, he didn't want a Magician with Olympian blood running about, he sees the boy as a threat," the Goddess says.
"How did the vote swing?" Zoë says, already planning on the best way to hide the boy.
"We didn't even get to the vote," Artemis says, "after my twin got over his shock, and learned the boy's name, had informed the council that Harry was protected by prophecy and that not even Zeus could kill the boy," the Goddess informs her lieutenant as Zoë blinks in shock.
"Did Lord Apollo inform you of the contents of the prophecy?" Zoë asks, and Artemis nods with a grim look on her face.
"It was probably the reason why the old wizard had shown up to take the boy," Artemis says, "But it doesn't matter right now, the prophecy has been stalled for a lack of a better term," the Goddess says, and both she and her lieutenant are quiet for a while, each turning over different thoughts in their minds.
"The boy can not stay at camp alone, I wouldn't put it past my father to try something, protected or not," Artemis says softly, "I have already talked to Daphnis, he will be sending a Handmaiden to camp to help watch over the boy, but I will also be posting an active hunter to protect Harry if the need arises," Artemis informs Zoë whom nods.
"Which hunter?" Zoë asks, but she had already known the answer.
"I believe we already have our first volunteer," Artemis says, smiling down at the Lioness and her cub.
Michelle, Daughter of Aphrodite
A lone girl, sixteen years of age, made her way to the silver cabin of Lady Artemis, wearing a rather large sun hat and large sunglasses hoping to look inconspicuous, but looking quite the opposite as she quickly walked to the cabin. What she was about to do was tantamount to suicide at worst, ostracized by her brothers and sisters at best should she be caught, but she wasn't about to let that stop her from doing what she felt was right.
Walking up to the steps of cabin eight, stops just before putting a foot on the first step, she was still considered a maiden and she hasn't fallen in love yet, but considering who her mom was, Michelle wasn't about to take the chance. So she closes her eyes and begins to pray to Artemis, "Oh, Lady Artemis, Chasted Hunter, Eternal protector of maidens and children, hear my prayer and give me your mercy upon the act which I'm about to do, but I need to speak with the hunter that you left in charge, it is about your, um, son? I guess, he is in danger, My Lady and I have come with a warning about it, so please, please don't smite me," the daughter of Aphrodite whispers under her breath before putting her foot on the first step.
Opening one eye and looking around, she finds herself still herself, and not a woodland animal, but if Artemis did decide to turn her into something, she was hoping for a bunny, at least bunnies were cute. She steps up to the door and knocks on It, she waits only for a few seconds before she knocks again, looking around. Until finally the door opens and out peeks confused forest-green eyes before Michelle pushes the door open the rest of the way and enters the cabin.
"Oi," the blond girl says, "what gives you the-" but Michelle cuts the girl off before she can say another word.
"Where's Harry!?" Michelle hiss at the girl while looking around the room for said boy, the blond girl narrows her eyes at Michelle.
"He's in the shower, why?" The girl narrows her eyes, making sure Michelle couldn't enter deeper into the cabin.
"Okay, okay, that's good," Michelle says, rubbing her arms, "So, ah, I'm Michelle, don't know if Harry has told you about me, but I'm the girl who got Harry to, ah, talk about his home life, let's say," the daughter of love says and the hunter nods slowly.
"He said someone helped him but never shared who, I'm Atalanta," the hunter says, introducing herself.
"Oh, like the Ancient hero?" Michelle says, and Atalanta raised a brow.
"No," Atalanta says, "not LIKE her," the lioness says with a smile.
Michelle takes a few seconds to understand what Atalanta meant, "Oh," Michelle says, "Oh shit, you're hot," the daughter of love says under her breath before shaking her head, no, focus. "Okay, listen, last night my mom showed up in our cabin late last night," Michelle says before Atalanta cuts her off.
"And your mother is….who?" Atalanta asks.
"Aphrodite," answers Michelle, and Atalanta looks at her confused.
"How the fuck did you make it into the cabin?" The lioness asks, shocked.
"Prayed beforehand, now shut up, you need to hear this," Michelle says, "My mom showed up in the cabin last night, and well, she, she put a bounty on Harry I guess," the daughter of love says as she slowly starts to feel like something was watching her and Atalanta narrows her eyes and steps into Michelle's personal space causing her to blush.
"What do you mean by bounty?!" Atalanta says through gritted teeth.
"Umm," the daughter of love says, kinda getting sidetracked by the hot and angry girl in her face, "what? Right! Bounty! The bounty on Harry! So, the first person in cabin ten to have Harry fall in love with them, sleep with them, and then break his heart, gets a wish from her, anything within her power to give, she will," Michelle says before jumping as the atmosphere in the cabin becomes very very hostile. Michelle looks around with wide eyes wondering if she'll make it out the door in time to not get flayed alive by the Goddess of the Hunt right before Atalanta's hand wraps around her throat and slams her into the door.
"If you think I'm just going to let you…" Atalanta says as she squeezes the throat of the girl, watching her face turn red from the pressure, as the girl starts hitting her arm, trying to say something.
"Noaark mrk, arrot keee," Michelle says hitting the arm of the living legend, feeling equal parts turned on and scared out of her mind, it's a relief when Atalanta lets go of her throat enough so she could speak properly, "Not me, not me, not gonna do it I promise, I'm just here to warn you," Michelle quickly says to the hunter.
"Why?" Atalanta asks sharply
"Because unlike my siblings I don't want to hurt a kid, wish or not, I want to help kids like Harry, Ya know, child therapist, and stuff, besides Harry is the wrong gender for me, if she put one on you I'd try, but, but, …I'll stop talking now," Michelle says quickly.
Atalanta pauses for a moment, looking at the blushing girl with an odd look in her eye, " Yeah, no, not touching that last part, also, not what I meant!" Atalanta says with her own light blush, "I meant why now? Harry's nine and this isn't ancient greece, he is way too young for any of that," Atalanta says as she removes her hand from the other girl's throat before she gets any ideas that would get them both dead.
Michelle rubs her throat, "Well, Mom didn't really put a time limit on it, Ya know?" The daughter of love says, "She said something about taking our time and doing the trail right," Michelle shrugs.
"Fuck," Atalanta curses.
"Yeah, that about sums it up," Michelle says before looking around, "Listen, just, just don't let him be around my siblings by himself, okay?" The daughter of love says, and Atalanta nods, running her hands down her face in exasperation.
"Okay, okay, got ya," Atalanta sighs out and can't help but feel like this was going to be a running theme with Harry.
"Okay, good," Michelle says with a nod, "Is there like, a window that I can climb out of or a back door?" She asks.
"No, we don't have windows to ensure-" the Lioness begins to say before a window in the back of the cabin slides up that she was reasonably sure wasn't there a moment ago.
Artemis
Artemis sat beside the fire outside, looking over her hunters, it had been a week since the daughter of Aphrodite knocked on her cabin door at the camp to deliver her warning. She was still turning over what to do in her head, Harry was still far too young to join the hunt, even if he wanted to, it would be another five years before he was big enough to keep up with the hunt and fight with them, all she could do is make sure that the boy kept far away from the children of Aphrodite until then.
She and her hunters were in northern New Mexico hunting down a pack of skinwalkers that was causing trouble at the request of the DoMC, it was an exciting hunt, the skinwalkers while wearing their pelts could smell the hunt coming from a mile away and be leading them on a merry chase across the desert, with any luck they'll be able to wrap this up in less than a week so she could get back to the camp to check in with Atalanta and Cecilia. But as Artemis sat, stargazing, and her hunters are their evening meal, Artemis sees something flapping in the wind towards her. Knowing this wasn't a bird, she waits till it was within reach before snatching it out of the air, it was a folded origami bird addressed to her. Her lieutenant watches her unfold it to read the small note on the inside before throwing it into the flames of the campfire before looking around and counting the heads of her hunters, all thirty-nine were in camp and dressed.
"What is it, My Lady?" Zoë asks with narrowed eyes.
"We are going to have a guest," Artemis says, catching the attention of most of her hunt, "be at ease, this guest knows my rules and will respect them," the Goddess says as she stands before looking out in the sand and hills of the desert, "You have my permission Agent Doe, but do remember your manners," Artemis speaks to the wind and dry air before a crack can be heard causing half the hunt to jump and draw their weapons to point at the man in a black pinstripe suit, his dark eyes were looking at his feet as his salt and pepper hair blow in the dry wind.
"Of course, Lady Artemis," the man says, "I have far too much respect for you and your hunt to ever be rude," his voice is flat and his tone is all business.
"Raise your head, Agent Doe," Artemis says to the man, "My hunters are all decent, you are not a threat to broken oaths," the Goddess informs him and the man does as instructed.
"Thank you, Lady Artemis," Agent Doe says, "My apologies for interrupting your hunt, but as my note said I have urgent news to discuss with you," the man says, pausing to wait to be permitted to speak further.
"Speak Agent Doe," Artemis says and the man nods.
"As of thirty-six hours ago, my office was informed of a threat to the safety of Camp-Halfblood and to one of the Campers in specific, that being your son," Agent Doe says, and Artemis narrows her eyes as most of the hunt begins to stand.
"And what is the nature of this threat?" Artemis asks as calmly as she could.
"A little over a week ago, there was a breakout at Azkaban prison, only one prisoner escaped but it wasn't discovered until twenty-four hours after it had occurred, the prisoner's name is Sirius Black," the DoMC assistant head tells Artemis who narrows her eyes at the name.
"I know that name," Artemis says in a whisper, "He was at Lily and James' home when I visited them before they died," she tells the agent.
"That isn't shocking from what our investigation has uncovered," Agent Doe says, "He was a close friend to be James and Lily Potter, and he is the reason why they are dead," he says, "they were hiding under a very complicated piece of magic that hid a location of a place in the form of a secret in the soul of the person who was keeping it, and only they could give it away and reveal where the location," the Agent explains, and the Goddesses eyes widen as her rage begins to twist her face, her skin begins to split and crack as her true form begins to show through in silver moonlight. Agent Doe shuts his eyes and turns away as does most of the hunt but her lieutenant.
"By the reports, we have gotten from the English MoM, Sirius Black turned over the secret to the terrorist known as Lord Voldemort," Agent Doe confirms what the Goddess had already figured out, and her scream of rage echoes across the desert.
The man, the reason her son had spent seven years in hell, was alive!? He had escaped!? No, no, no, no, no, this wouldn't do, he was dead! He was dead and she was going to flay him alive! She was going to feed him to her hound's piece by piece, she was going to feed him to the hunt as long as she could before dragging him back to do it again! The last miserable moments of Sirius Black's life are going to last for a long, long, time!
"My Lady," Zoë says calmly, "I know you are rightfully angry, but I beseech you, to contain yourself before you kill Agent Doe," the lieutenant says, looking past the glow of moonlight coming off her Goddess to the burning skin of the Agent.
"How sure are you that he'll be going after Harry," Artemis asks.
"Reasonably sure, before Sirius Black broke out, the guards noted him saying 'He's in America, He's in America,' which was strange because that bit of information was never released to the public," the Agent says, his voice barely affected by the pain of Artemis' divine form.
Artemis closes her eyes and takes a few deep breaths as she recreates her mortal form, "Strider! Brittany! Sophie! Pack up, Now!" Artemis roars as the hunters she named scramble to their tents to do just that, "Zoë, I must return to the Camp to forewarn Chiron and Atalanta of this," Artemis says, just before Agent Doe speaks up.
"No need for that Lady Artemis," the man says, "that is why it took me so long to tell you, my first stop was the camp seeing that is where Harry is staying," the Agent says before Artemis turns to him.
"You have my thanks, Agent Doe," Artemis says, her anger making her voice sharp, but it doesn't seem to bother the Agent much, all far too used to the Gods and their wrath.
"While you are welcome, Lady Artemis, I still have two more things to discuss with you," the Agent says, "The first, and please do not take this the wrong way, but I have a team of warders with me, if deem it okay, all I need is the general location of the skinwalkers and i'll send them off to make sure your hunt can be over far quicker," the man says politely.
Artemis turns the offer over for a moment before shanking her head, "That will not be necessary, Agent, we have started this hunt by ourselves and we will finish it by ourselves," the Goddess says and the man simply nods.
"The last thing I need to tell you is arguably the more important piece of information," Agent Doe says, and Artemis nods for him to continue, "since I am reasonably sure you do not know, Sirius Black is Harry Potters Godfather both legally and by magic," the agent explains.
"So?" Artemis says as her hunters returned packed and prepared for their trip.
"While if he was just legally we wouldn't have much to worry about, it's that last bit that is important since he is recognized as the boy's Godfather by the divine domain of magic, he has a claim on the boy, a claim, by the treaties, is far more powerful then yours," Agent Doe explains and Artemis freezes.
"That means…" Artemis whispers in horror, her eyes widening, as the Agent nods grimly.
"The wards around camp won't stop him and if he so chooses, he can remove Harry from the camp, no questions asked," the man says, "and there is nothing that you could do to stop him,"
Jonathan Vance, MACUSA Auror
It had been a long day for Jonathan Vance, he had spent the better part of the morning investigating where a shipment of man-eating toilets had come from and how they got sold to a no-maj plumbing company. After a pitiful lunch, he spent the rest of his shift going over and signing paperwork for a request for search warrants for the man-eating fiasco, Jonathan wasn't just tired, he was exhausted and was ready for a big dinner and an early bedtime.
So as he walked throw the long hall that made up Auror HQ for the west coast of MACUSA, he walked by the poster board of the Ten Worst(the ten most wanted in the ICW territories) he saw that the former number one was replaced by some guy named Sirius Black, Jon shrugs and continues on his way out of the door that leads to the Auror offices, He wasn't on the international Hit Wizard squad so it really wasn't his problem.
But as he pulls open the glass and gold door that leads to MACUSA's main lobby, a dog slips in, it was a rather mangy one, its fur matted and dirty, thin as a stick for its large dark frame. Jon looks out into the lobby trying to see if anyone from Magical creature control was anywhere looking for it, but sees no one, but hears one of his colleagues say from behind him, "Hey, whose dog is this?"
As he turns around to answer that it had just slipped it, he hears a gasp and a scream, and Jon's wand slips into his hand as he turns around, pointing it. Where the dog had once been, was now a man, in dirty prison clothes, long matted and shaggy hair, and unshaven he had his hands raised in surrender before he speaks in a hoarse voice from years of disuse, or from screaming far too much.
"Umm, ello, I'm, ah, Sirius Orion from the Most Ancient and Most Noble House of Black, and sorry about this, but didn't really know where else to go," the now-identified number one worst says, "But I was imprisoned unjustly, unlawfully, and without trial for the last nine years in my home country and I'm here to file for asylum in MACUSA, and I didn't really know where to go," Sirius Black says with a shrug and a smirk, and Jonathan Vance has the feeling that his day was about to get a lot longer.
Sirius Black
Sirius Black was remanded to a holding cell soon after he made his grand entrance in the Auror hall of the Empire State Building, he was told nothing except to sit and wait, and that was twelve hours ago. The only things in the cell were a bed and a toilet, which was far more than he ever got in Azkaban, as he lay in that bed looking up at the white stone ceiling, he prayed and hoped he did the right thing.
The door to the cell opened and two men walked in with shackles and manacles, and wordlessly cuffed him before escorting him to another room with a table and chairs bolted to the ground and chaining him to the table they told him someone would be in to see him in a bit before the men left. Twenty minutes later, Sirius was once again praying to anything that would hear him that he had done the right thing, for himself, and more importantly, for Harry. It was then the oddest feeling came over him, like he was sitting in front of the fireplace at the Potter Manor House the night he ran away from home, and he sighs as the cold of Azkaban finally leaves his bones.
The door to the room opens and in walks a petty young woman, she was the same height as Sirius with dark brown hair cut into a short bob and soft blue eyes, she smiles as she walks in carrying a flat white box with a six-pack of cola and some water bottles, it smelt like heaven to Sirius.
"Mister Black?" She asks, and Sirius nods, she smiles like a thousand-watt bulb as she places the box on the table before reaching across the table to unshackle his hands, "My name is Amanda Joy, I'm a representative for the Department of International Affairs with the ICW, now I was pretty surprised when I got a floo call from my office about how Sirius Black gave himself up to MACUSA Aurors and throw around words like unlawful imprisonment and held without trial," she says as she moves off the drinks from the box and picks up the file they were sitting on, "So, my department did a little digging into public records of the Ministry of Magic in London, and surprise, surprise, we found your trail on their docket, the last thing on their docket, for the next five years," she opens the box to reveal a New York style cheese pizza, "digging a bit deeper we found that it had been pushed back on the docket by fives years, three years ago, they had essentially locked you up and said they'll get to it and just kept pushing it back, which is a breach of ethics for any ICW signed government," Amanda says as she takes off her suit jacket and hanging it behind the chair opposite of Sirius before rolling up her sleeves and sitting down.
She tears off a slice of pizza before taking a bite, "When my office found that out, they told the MoM that MACUSA had you in custody, the MoM promptly told them to hand you over, in which we yanks did what we do best when we are told to do something, we told them to 'make us'," she says with a cocky smile, "Needless to say, they aren't too happy right now, by the way, help yourself to some of the pie and drinks if you want," Miss Joy says, before Sirius jumps on her offer and inhaling the first real food he's had in the last eight years.
Sirius speaks in between bites, throwing manners out the window, "So, what does all the mean?" He asks, it sounds straightforward but you never know with these government types.
"Well, it means that your asylum application is being looked over very, very closely by both MACUSA and the ICW, there is evidence of fowl play or gross negligence on the MoM part seeing that the only reason they were holding you is because they found you at the scene of a crime," Miss Joy says with a smile, "but being found at the scene of a crime isn't proof of committing a crime, suspicion of, sure, but not proof," she puts down her pizza and cracks open a cola before taking a sip, "When we asked them to turn over everything from their initial investigation of what happened the day you supposedly killed thirteen muggles, they gave us the run around for an hour or two before going silent, that was two hours ago," she says with a shrug as she picks up her slice and taking another bite and eating it.
Sirius reaches over and cracks open a water bottle before downing all of it in one go, and opening another, "And that has you being here like a saint of pizza to deliver upon a hungry man like me, …why?" Sirius asks before sipping his new water and going back to the pizza.
"Well, we decided if they didn't want to hand over any evidence, we would investigate the only avenue we had, you." Miss Joy explained, "So, what we're going to do is take your statement about what happened leading up to the event in question, during it, and after it, I'll put your memories of the event, and I even have a form for you to sign if you wish to submit a testimony under Veritaserum, if you want," Miss Joy tells Sirius as he finishes off his third slice, nodding his head.
"Ah, Yeah, yeah sure," he says as he picks up the form readying it over before signing it and handing it back to the woman.
She reads it over before nodding, "Okay, that looks in order, and I have to say it goes a long way that you're willing to take Veritaserum for a testimony, now let me set up the Quote-Quill-Notes and we can get started," Amanda says with a smile before doing just that. The quill was charmed to write down every word that both speakers said but each speaker had a color assigned to them, Sirius had picked red, and Amanda pick purple, they had to talk slowly and Sirius wasn't allowed to speak while Amanda was talking or visa verse to not confuse the Quill. In the end, it took another two and a half hours of recounting chasing Peter across England, what he had pulled in the street, the fact that both he and Peter were animagus, she had asked for a list of people who knew, which only had one name. Then she asked why he was chasing Peter, and he had told her why, she was quiet, never interpreting him, and held her questions till the end and extracted memories as she went.
"I'm not gonna lie, Mister Black, what we have here is enough to put up a strong case," Miss Joy says as she puts the glass tubes of swirling white memories and Sirius' statement away in a folder.
"I can hear the but coming," Sirius says and Amanda looks back at him.
"But, I need you to know, if anything you've told me today is untrue or that you lied in any way, my superiors will throw you back to England faster than you care to blink," Amanda says in a serious no-nonsense tone, and Sirius nods.
"I swear, everything I told you is the truth," Sirius says, looking her in the eyes, she doesn't blink for a moment before moving back to him and standing up with the folder under her arm.
"Alright then, you can finish the rest of the pizza if you want and the drinks too, I have to go turn this in to my bosses," Amanda says waving the folder, "but I'll make sure you get return to a nicer cell with some amenities and a shower," she says with a smile before she turns to the door and begins to open it, "now if there's nothing else Mister Black, -" Miss Joy says before Sirius calls out.
"Wait," Sirius says, "Wait, there, there is something," he says with desperation in his voice, along with a spark of hope in his eyes, "My Godson, he's, he's here, in the states, in New York, I-I need to find him, I need to make sure he's okay," Sirius says to Miss Joy who nods before taking back her quill and a piece of parchment.
"What's his name?" Is all she asks.
Artemis
"Lady Artemis, please," Agent Doe says as he quickly follows behind her as she storms through the MACUSA wing of the Empire State Building, "Please calm down, there is significant evidence that he didn't do it, this is no longer how it seemed to be," he says as he's half a step behind her.
They had found him; on a stroke of luck, a woman had tried to access DoMC-sealed files about Camp HalfBlood and raised red flags when the department found out why they had immediately contacted Artemis about it. She was in her adult form half listening to what the agent was saying, she would find out herself when she was peeling Sirius Black's flesh from his body for what he did to Harry. As she approached the holding area for criminals the solid iron door, reinforced by all manners of spells and wards, crumples like aluminum as she nears it before being blasted down the hallway, she heard the agent curse behind her but she didn't care, she was on a hunt, and nothing would stop her.
She finds his cell quickly, another mortal was in it, she could hear her talking from down the hall.
"-is as far as I got, all I can say for sure there is a camp in Long Island Sound and its name is Camp HalfBlood but-" the mortal is cut off as Artemis and Agent Doe enter the cell. He was inside, she remembered him, He was holding Harry close while they both were asleep on the chair when she had first seen Harry, the man was holding the boy protectively in front of the hearth that night. But as soon as Sirius Black looks into her eyes, He knows who she is by the fear in his eyes, and she wastes no time.
"Excuse me, who ar-" is as far as the other mortal gets before Artemis is across the room, wrapping her hand around the man who had sentenced her child to seven years in hell and slamming him to the back wall, holding him up, his feet dangling above the ground.
"Hands off the prisoner, now!" The other mortal screams before Agent Doe joins them.
"Amanda Joy, stand down, I repeat, stand down and step out of the cell," Agent Doe says, flashing his badge, "This is no longer your problem, put down the wand and step out of the cell!" He yells, but Artemis ignores both for the man she had in her grasp.
"Do you remember me, Sirius Black?" The Goddess of the Hunt hisses at him, her rage on full display as she squeezes his throat tighter. By the look in the eyes of Sirius Black, he did, and he was very, very afraid. Artemis feels a spell from the woman strike her back, a slowly turns her head to the mortal whose face was set in horror as she realized her spell did nothing to Artemis, before with a single flick of Artemis' free hand she set the woman flying from the room, crashing into the stone wall outside of the room.
"Lady Artemis, Please, contain your wrath!" Agent Doe says, the panic in his voice was loud and clear, he was afraid that Artemis would bring down the whole building in her rage. While not the most powerful Olympian, she wasn't a part of the council for nothing and had the power to do something as small as toppling the Empire State Building in anger.
Artemis turns back to Sirius, his face turning a shade of blue, "You knew of me and you thought I was just going to sit back and let you lay a single hand on Harry? After all you've already done to him? You are a fool, Sirius Black," the Goddess of the hunt hisses at him, "Now let me show you what I do to fools," the Goddess of the Hunt says before drawing one of her hunting knives, and unlike the armaments that were given to the demigods, her blade would work on mortal flesh.
It was then a soft but stern voice spoke, "Artemis, put him down please," it said, Artemis knew the voice, she didn't know why she was there, but it didn't matter, the Goddess of the Hunt had her prey by the throat and she would remove the threat to her son.
"Oh, thank the gods," Artemis hears agent Doe say in relief as Artemis raises her blade.
"Artemis Phaesporia, you will release him now, or I will be forced to put you in a corner," the stern voice becomes harder, uncompromising, it was either Artemis did what she was told or suffered the wrath of the voice behind her, but still Artemis holds Sirius by the throat. He was a threat, he had caused her son to fall into hands that had tormented him for years, she would not abide by this insult, and she would not suffer him to live without agony a moment longer! With that thought in mind, Artemis drives her blade forward to end the hunt, to end the threat. But before the blade could get within an inch of the man's flesh, a hand grips her wrist, and Artemis' mortal flesh sizzled like a stake on the grill, and as Artemis' head snaps to the one who stopped her, the eyes of the Hunt met twin burning coals of the Hearth just before Artemis is ripped away from the man and slammed into the corner of the cell, the reinforced wall crumples under the force of the throw.
Harry Potter age: 9
Harry Potter had a few odd months, it all started with one morning after leaving the showers (fully dressed), when he had found Atalanta closing a window he was reasonably sure that wasn't there yesterday with an angry annoyed look on her face. Then there was everyone from cabin ten being way more friendly to him than ever before, whenever Atalanta would see them near him she would start shooting blunted Arrows at them, chasing them off. When Harry had asked why she did it, she just shook her head and told him she would tell him when he was older.
Then he met one of his mom's handmaidens who had come all the way from Artemis' temple on Olympus to help watch over Harry, as she said, Cecilia was nice but very strict. When she had learned he hadn't been to school in over a year, she decided to help fix that, and quickly ousted Atalanta as head counselor of cabin eight and set up a new activity schedule for Harry. He had schooling from eight in the morning to two in the afternoon with lunch at twelve, after schooling he would have outside activities with Atalanta, like combat training, track and field, and archery practice; Harry really liked archery practice.
Everything was great besides all that stuff, even at the end of the month when the hunt came back for a few days, they didn't stay until Friday, just enough time to rest up in between the last hunt and the next. Apparently, there was a family of Chimera that was causing trouble in the jungles of South America, how they said it was really scary, but also made it sound really fun. They went west to deal with some skinwalkers after that, but at least he got to see his mum twice, she couldn't stay for long but always pulled him to the side to talk to him before telling him to listen to Zoë, Atalanta, and Cecilia before leaving, it had always left him smiling.
After the hunt had left that time, one of the men who had shown up to try and take Harry back had arrived once more with Chiron, he hid behind Atalanta for protection. When he said he need to talk to Atalanta alone for a moment he was sent back to the cabin with Cecilia and waited, when Atalanta had returned to the cabin she was mad and had pulled Cecilia outside to talk, and then they BOTH came back and Harry was worried he had done something wrong and hid under one of the beds; It had taken them a good hour to talk him back out.
In the end, neither of them had told Harry what was going on, not even when three more hunters had shown up to stay at the cabin with them. At least it was Brittany, Sophie, and one of the polite hunters, Strider is what the other girls called her and they had enough people to play in the capture the flag matches, even if Sophie wasn't allowed but she did watch and cheer them on. They had teamed with the cabin that wasn't teamed with cabin 10, which was weird and scary how happy Atalanta was taking pop shots at the sons and daughters of Aphrodite, but at least they won! It was like that for another two months before Atalanta and Cecilia were pulled aside by Chiron to talk about something as Harry was practicing his archery, he still hadn't split an arrow yet.
"You have to be kidding me!?" Harry hears Atalanta yell, and he turns to look at the hunters, Atalanta had thrown her hands in the air before she starts to move them rapidly while she was yelling at the ancient Centaur, "He can't actually do that, Artemis said he stays here, at camp, where he's safe!" She yells, "this guy can't do this, please tell me he can't," the Lioness says and Chiron sighs.
"If you would let me finish Atalanta," Chiron says, sounding a bit annoyed, "He can, but he apparently knows more about our world than most Wixen should, He had told me himself he would rather not but will if push comes to shove, Artemis no longer has a say in it, he's been awarded custody of the boy," the trainer of heroes says as Atalanta's face turns white.
"What?" The Lioness says in a horrified whisper, "He wanted Harry dead less then a month ago, how in Hades did he get custody of him?" Atalanta says, the tone of disbelief echoing how she felt and Harry shuffles nervously.
"It was, apparently, a misunderstanding," Chiron says with a sigh, "He just wants to meet the boy, and introduce himself, that's all for now," he says, and Harry watches Atalanta shake with rage.
"If you think I'm going to let him-" Atalanta begins to say but is quickly cut off by Chiron.
"It isn't about what you want any more, Atalanta," Chiron says quickly, standing at full height, "It is either he meets the boy here, now, or he will use his right as the boy's Guardian to pull him from camp, either way, he will meet the boy, at least this way you can be in the same room as them when they do," Chiron says as Atalanta deflates, "He has been made well aware of how protective the hunt is over the boy, especially you, he agreed to have one of you escort the boy and be with him in the room when he meets him," the trainer explains.
"That's fine, Chiron, please inform him we will be down shortly," Cecilia says before Atalanta turns to her with a look of betrayal on her face as Chiron nods before turning around and trotting towards the big house.
Before Atalanta could speak, Cecilia cuts her off, "You heard him, Atalanta, if the man doesn't get to meet him now he'll do something that he doesn't want to do, this way you can make sure he won't be able to touch Harry as long as your between them," Cecilia explains before turning to look at Harry and calling him over.
Harry was scared, he could feel his heart beating in his ears as Cecilia explains that someone was at the big house to meet him. Would he take him away from camp like the old man tried to do? Was he here to hurt him like the Dursleys? Would he have to leave Atalanta? He didn't want any of those things to happen, but it sounded like no one could do anything to stop it. So, Harry let himself be led by Atalanta down to the Big House, looking at his feet the whole time. He wanted to run away, he wanted to stay at camp with Cecilia and Atalanta, he wanted his heart to stop beating so fast and his ears to stop popping with every step. Neither Atalanta nor Cecilia said anything as they walk to the big house, only when they got inside where Atalanta asked him to stay put for a moment before walking into the Rec-room before she closed the door behind her.
Harry didn't dare look up to Cecilia, even when the yelling in the Rec room started, Harry could make out every word said, and his head started to hurt from all the noise. The beating of his heart, the beating of Cecilia's, the laughs and giggles from across the field near the cabins, and the yelling began to die down as the hallway got too small. The door opens up and Harry hears Atalanta ask Harry to come in, so he does.
The first thing he hears is a gasp, and then a voice thick with emotions speaks his name, but still, Harry doesn't look up, not even when footsteps come near him only to be stopped when Atalanta growls like a lion. He hears some get to their knees a few feet from him, the rapid beating of the person's heart matches his own, both are scared but for different reasons.
"You look just like James," the voice says, and Harry finally looks up because he knows that name, it was the name of his mortal father. It was a man with short brown hair, a clean shave, and gray eyes that matches that of a storm cloud in instantly. He was thin and pale, and his skin had a waxy complexion as if he had not seen the sun in a long, long time. He smiles at Harry, and it was full of kindness and fondness on a level he had only ever seen on Atalanta's or his mom's face.
"But you have your mother's eyes, both of them it seems," the man says with a quiet laugh, confusing Harry.
"What do you mean by that, Black?" Atalanta says from behind Harry, tone full of hostile intent.
"Their green, like Lily's, there's, there's some, memory stuff and I couldn't, I didn't," the man tries to explain but shakes his head, "His pupils are split like Artemis' too," the man mumbles.
"What?" Atalanta says in a surprised whisper before walking over to Harry, "Harry look at me really fast," she asks and Harry looks her in the eyes, and Atalanta gasps, for the Hunt that the boy was born from, had finally touched him.
Sirius Black would later go on to be cleared of all charges gaining access to his inheritance, and choosing to stay in New York in a penthouse he had warded just for Harry that overlooked Central Park. His Godson would later that year move in with him, but of course, the cub would go nowhere without the Lioness that protected him. Sirius had opened his home to Atalanta with a smile showing her the room he had set aside just for her, though he would often find her snuggling with Harry most mornings to his amusement. After a few long years later, Sirius would meet a woman name Sally, and they would bond over the shared single parenthood over a Demigod child before they started to date.
Harry would spend the school year with Sirius, going to a private school where Sirius warded himself to keep the monsters that hunted him away, though there was still a few incidents that almost got the boy expelled, thank Merlin for mind magic. Harry would spend his summers at Camp HalfBlood learning to hone the gifts of his blood, but as Harry turned eleven, a choice would show up for him in the form of two letters, one marked with a purple H and another marked with a blue I. Sirius would not force Harry to go to a school halfway across the world, so he had let him choose.
In the end, Harry had chosen neither, for Harry wanted to Hunt, because he was no longer the child locked away in the cupboard under the stairs like something broken and unwanted, no, he was the boy saved from that darkness to run wild and free with the Hunt, with his sisters, with his Mother.
And so a dark lord couldn't gain a stone from a mirror thanks to a trick from the cunning old headmaster.
A boy who could have been the one marked found his bravery in the darkness of a chamber and slayed the Millennial serpent to save a maiden.
A wolf had found a rat, and he and the hound had chased it from the castle.
But the boy would not see the castle that he was to go to until shortly after his fourteenth birthday, when his name drifted from a burning chalice, and he would show up with a silver jacket and a bow slung across his back to meet his destiny.
Wild and free from his past.
Notes:
that's it, What if!? Done.
I will do no more of this, I want to do at least the first year of the boy who vanished before I start on anything else, like The Heir of Fire or anything like that.
But, the time has come, I will see you all in....
The Heir and the Champions.
