Apocalypse: Modifying Everything, Building an Iron Fortress

Chapter 22 - They Can Evolve! The City Destruction Plan!

Chapter 22: They Can Evolve! The City Destruction Plan!

In the footage, there was a middle-aged man who appeared small and frail, standing at about 1.6 meters tall.

But what made Jiang Cheng and Liu Yuqing’s hearts skip a beat was that this originally emaciated, short middle-aged man transformed after mutating into a towering figure over 2.5 meters tall, with a body size two to three times more exaggerated than that of Dwayne Johnson.

The process of mutation, from the appearance of the change, the writhing of muscles, to the transformation of the body, seemed lengthy when described, but the entire mutation took only seven or eight seconds. During this time, bullets rained down on the giant figure as if they cost nothing, with soldiers relentlessly firing into its body.

Yet, to this giant, it was as if he was being tickled—it had no effect whatsoever.

It wasn’t until a loud bang resounded and a piercing round precisely pierced its head that the creature was finally brought down. By then, however, six or seven people were already dead, more than a dozen were injured, and over twenty had been infected!

But these were just regular zombies, quickly dealt with by the soldiers.

Once the surroundings were calm, the reporter hurriedly rushed to the camera.

“As you can see, although those infected with the new rabies virus are dangerous, the soldiers were able to handle the situation swiftly. So, we urge viewers to actively cooperate with the recommendations from the Cultural and Military Departments. Prepare enough food and water, stay safe at home, avoid going out as much as possible, and wait for rescue!”

As the news broadcast ended and commercials began airing, Liu Yuqing hadn’t noticed that the skewer in her hand had long gone cold, but she didn’t care anymore.

Retracting her gaze from the TV, Liu Yuqing looked at Jiang Cheng beside her, filled with disbelief. “Just now … what was that zombie? Have you ever seen something like that?”

Jiang Cheng shook his head, frowning, and said, “If I’m not mistaken, that zombie has evolved!”

“Evo… evolved?”

Liu Yuqing gasped, unable to believe it. “Are you saying it’s like those zombies infected with the T-virus in Resident Evil?”

Jiang Cheng nodded.

The moment he saw that zombie on TV, he suddenly recalled the zombie he had encountered on the first floor that used its arm to block his nail gun!

This guess was probably correct. The zombies in this world could indeed evolve! This was not good news at all!

After finishing their meal, Liu Yuqing naturally began tidying up the table. Seeing this, Jiang Cheng didn’t interfere. He took out his phone and walked over to the side by himself.

Finding a seat by the window, he sat down, looked out at the street below, lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and then slowly exhaled.

Feeling his mind clear a bit, he softly said, “Jarvis, check on the current situation in various countries around the world, as well as the real situation with the Military and Cultural Departments in Shangbin City. And, of course, if you can hack into their intranets and get internal information, that would be even better.”

He didn’t believe in the news for a second. In this apocalypse, the only way to do anything was to survive first—this was something he understood very well.

“Understood, sir!” Jarvis responded promptly.

It didn’t take long after his response—just about ten seconds—before Jarvis’s voice sounded again, summarizing the information he had found.

After understanding the situation, it was pretty much as Jiang Cheng had guessed.

The status of the infection in various countries was consistent with what he had found earlier in the day. Although there had been zombies appearing before, they had been contained by each country. However, today, the situation in Shangbin City spiraled out of control, triggering the outbreak. Other countries around the world also saw the outbreak of the zombie crisis in the past two days as they failed to contain it.

It could be said that this was the early stage of the apocalypse!

After the initial chaos, the Cultural and Military Departments of each country had already organized forces!

However, these Military and Cultural Departments had no plans to rescue the public but rather chose to continue covering up the truth, just like in the news broadcast earlier, constantly trying to appease the populace.

In fact, the Cultural Department of the United States had privately launched a city destruction plan against a city severely infected by the virus!

They completely sealed off all the city’s traffic routes, sent in aircraft for indiscriminate bombing, not only eliminating the zombies within but also obliterating the entire city.

The reason they hadn’t used nuclear weapons, Jiang Cheng speculated, was partly to avoid causing too much of a commotion and partly to preserve a livable environment.

After all, the radiation from nuclear weapons would turn the city into a permanent no-go zone, rendering it unusable forever. But looking at the current situation, using nuclear weapons was just a matter of time.

As for the situation in his own country, it was relatively better, but the most severe case was in Shangbin.

Because of this, Shangbin City had been completely sealed off!

All exits from the city had checkpoints set up, and anyone who wanted to leave had to undergo inspection first!

The situation in the Cultural Department wasn’t much different from what he had found out during the day. The officials had long since evacuated Shangbin, hiding in safer cities.

The things shown on TV were nothing more than empty talk, meant to deceive the ordinary people, to keep them calm and give them a glimmer of hope so they wouldn’t act out.

Of course, there would be actions taken, like setting up checkpoints at every exit from the city, and there would be rescue operations, but those were just for show.

Even if they did rescue anyone, it would only be those on the outskirts of the city. As for the citizens in the city center, they would be left to fend for themselves.

To these officials, saving even one person was ideal. But if they couldn’t save anyone, once Shangbin was lost, they would bomb the city just like in the U.S., clearing it out. And if that didn’t work, they would resort to nuclear weapons!

The situation with the Military Department was the same; they were ready to cooperate with the Cultural Department’s plans at any time.

Additionally, through hacking into the intranets of the Cultural and Military Departments, Jarvis discovered that the closest safe city to Shangbin was Donghai City!

All the personnel evacuating from Shangbin City were being relocated to Donghai City!

Moreover, the rescue operations that were merely for show were only planned to last for seven days. If the infection wasn’t contained within that time, Shangbin City would be completely abandoned!

In other words, after seven days, they might dispatch the Military Department to bomb Shangbin City!
