Standing on the formation with the other classmates he hadn't seen in two years, Yu smiled happily. After so many years of training and endless practice, he had finally succeeded.
Standing beside him was Sun Ce, the man he was proud to call brother. His fine armour and sharp spear gleamed in the torchlight. Surrounded by his comrades from the special class, Tse stood in front of Yu and placed a hand on his shoulder.
-How are you, Yui?
Blinking in surprise, the orphan hurriedly assured his friend that everything was fine, but instead of words, an incomprehensible mush came out of his mouth. The taste of iron settled in his mouth, and clouds began to appear instead of the silhouettes of the students.
A black wave of hair flashed beside Tse. Leaning over the teenager's body, Wenling patted his shoulder, trying to bring him to his senses.
-Yui, wake up!
The others appeared next to Wenling's face. Madam Ming, who outshone the sky with her beauty, and her gorgeous daughter, who promised to grow up to be just as beautiful. The ever frowning face of Huang Gai, the magnificent warrior, and of course Master Kai, the teacher who had helped to overcome Yu's fears. The beautiful Wenling continued to say something, until in an instant she clutched her cheeks. A blush crept between her slender fingers, and her eyes ran in different directions.
Looking at his friends, Yuu was surprised that they weren't saying anything. Their mouths were opening, but instead of words, some gibberish was heard. Though with each passing second, the sounds grew louder, giving the teenager the ability to distinguish the voices.
-... Ara-Ara, how brave, little Yuu.
-So embarrassing.
-It looks like you hit him too hard, Honourable Gai.
-Yes, it's true, it was my fault. So I must bear the punishment for his words.
-Do you really think the boy was wrong in his compliments and lied? So his words are just lies?
-...
-...
A deep sigh escaped from the orphan's chest as the boy rose from a lying position. Jumping up from his seat and leaping to the side, he disappeared with an earth shield, searching for his halberd with his eyes. While the others shouted something in pursuit of the dazed child, the young earth mage created a replacement out of stone, preparing to deflect blows from all sides.
Sun Ce, Masters Cai and Gai evenly surrounded the boy. Throwing between them like a wild beast, Yu Yu was growing calmer by the second. He finally let go of his weapon, which fell to the ground already a heap of earth. The eerie memories of the past few months before he joined the retinue of the Viceroy's son flashed through his mind.
Having fulfilled his part of the bargain, Juan Gai was able to leave the school, leaving the rest of his worries to the other teachers. It was with his arrival that all the trouble began. Having been given carte blanche to train Yu, the grey-haired bodyguard began attacking the boy at every opportunity. Alternating styles and weapons, the old man piled on the boy's combat experience, causing some of his hair to turn grey.
In just a couple of weeks, Yuu had gone from a sturdy and breathing young man to a twitchy, tortured labourer in his forties. He lost weight and bruises appeared under his eyes. Even when he went to the toilet, he kept his glaive in his hands, ready to deflect fireballs or archery shots.
Normal sleep was the reward for successfully countering attacks. Even during training in earth magic, Huang Gai could take an active part if Kai gave him permission.
A tough full contact fight with a grown man, a master in guan dao and fire magic, brought back the boy's insecurities. He began to make more mistakes and confuse his moves, and sparring with Wenling and the others became impossible for him. While he could still handle Sun Ren, her brother and Iron Fist's sister wiped the court with them constantly.
So today, while Yu was about to make a quick trip home after a fleeting battle against the Liping heir, Gai, who had attacked from behind the bushes, had other plans for the boy. Unfurling his glaive and hiding the blow behind waves of flame, he brought the shaft down on the orphan's head, sending him into a long knockout. While the boy was knocked out, Master Kai returned, already preparing to rest. Behind Sister Ce came the girl's mother, who also took an active part in watching the show.
As the memories of the past few weeks flashed through Yu's mind, he looked at Huang Gai with the gaze of a drunken sailor, only to fall to his knees and pass out again. Before making contact with the ground, however, the teenager managed to point a finger reproachfully in the direction of the old man's bodyguard. After kicking up a small layer of dust, the boy's body snored happily, plunging his exhausted body into a restful sleep.
The teachers and aristocrats gathered around him looked at each other thoughtfully.
-I guess we overdid it....
Hearing Kai's quiet whispering, Wenling looked questioningly at the elderly teacher. Realising that he had said too much, the old man made an attempt to flee, but surrounded by children on all sides, he was forced to answer the questions.
-Yes, it was done for a reason. After consulting with my dear colleague, - Kai kindly pointed his palm towards Gai, - we decided that the boy could use a few more chakras....
-Has he been able to open any?
The Viceroy's wife waved off the questions and promised to tell them later, but she fixed her gaze on the old men's faces. Unlike the teenagers, Sun Ming knew exactly what the master was talking about. At one time, the woman had also tried to open them, but had failed miserably. Long meditations or moral breakdowns and pushing her own limits were not for her.
-Yes, he was able to open the earth chakra on his own, but after his parents died, it closed. Last year we were able to overcome that and reopen it.
Taking the baton in the story, Huang Gai stepped forward. The frowning old man folded his arms across his chest, trying not to meet the eyes of the lord's wife.
-It was only recently that we realised that his next chakra was open as well. With his strength, the boy got rid of his guilt. That's why he was able to open the second chakra without even realising it.
-He's an attentive guy.
Winking at Wenling, Master Kai only encountered a disdainful look in return. Confused, he scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, bowing his head in apology.
-The third chakra is blocked by shame, but we still couldn't figure out what he regretted the most. Too many options, and the guy himself can't figure it out. So we decided to focus on willpower, which can be used to open the chakra.
-So you're torturing him for some mystical chakra. -So you're torturing him. When he opens them, what will it do?
At Sun Ce's question, all three teenagers looked at the embarrassed teachers carefully. Even the stern Huang Gai portrayed a semblance of remorse on his stern face.
-Qi serves as the basis for magic techniques as well as many other abilities.
-Mages of water can heal using Qi.
-A royal family can hurl lightning bolts.
Huang Gai's last comment sparked many times more interest in the unknown energy. The agitated children pounced on the grey-haired bodyguard from all sides, pelting him with questions. While they were distracted by the questioning, Min carefully approached Master Kai.
-Do you think he'll be able to open them all?
-Ohohoho, that would be splendid, Mistress. But I'm afraid his maximum is the third fire chakra. Guilt, fear and shame fill him to the brim, we can handle those, but I can't say anything about the others. I myself have only been able to open the first one, that's why I'm so good at earth magic.
Nodding at Master's words, OWLs Sun Ming bit her lips thoughtfully. It wasn't aristocratic at all, but just now, her son and husband's 'toy' had greatly increased in value. If the boy could learn how to control Qi, he could achieve a lot. Throwing a quick glance at Iron Fist's sister, the woman smiled slyly. Before she could hide the creepy grin behind her sleeve, she left witnessing this grimace.
A startled Kai pretended that nothing had happened. Hiding his hands behind his back, he bowed politely, heading towards his student. While the woman scrutinised the earth mage's tense back, her son and daughter were beside her.
-Will we be able to open these chakras? Maybe we should try? I wouldn't mind getting stronger if they help.
Her firstborn frowned amusedly, musing aloud.
'At least there's some upside to this bum.'
Since they had met, Tse had become many times more outgoing and pleasant as a person. The woman loved her husband, but didn't want her son to become the same. Thanking Agni for the generous gift, she took the boy under her elbow. With her other arm round her daughter's shoulders, the mother led them towards the house.
Her husband had many acquaintances all over the world, surely there would be some Qi Master among them that would help her children become even better.
As the Sun family left the site, Cai and Huang Gai tried to bring the disciple to their senses. But no matter how hard they tried, Yu's body refused to wake up until it was rested from the long sleepless nights. As Gai hoisted the boy's body onto his shoulder, a female figure appeared in front of the two old teachers.
-Master Kai, Master Gai, explain to me,‖ Gongsun Wenling bowed to the men in turn, never taking her eyes off them, -I want to learn this too. You don't have to sit with me, just explain how it works.
Huang Gai hummed, lightly tossed his disciple's body and headed towards the forest. Glaring at his mate's back, Cai grimaced at his bodyguard as he walked cheerfully away from the training field.
Turning back to Wenling, the elderly teacher noted an unprecedented eagerness in the girl's eyes and posture. The little noblewoman was already learning knowledge at a breakneck pace, and now she was bursting from every crevice with the realisation that there was an uncharted area that would make her stronger.
-Okay, -waving his hand, the man created a pair of chairs, -Sit down, I'll explain briefly.
Drawing a schematic view of the body from the side, Kai began to draw knots along the spine, which he tied together. The first began at the base, near the tailbone, and the last was drawn at the top of the head.
-Chakras are centres of power and consciousness, each of them has a close connection to some emotion of a person and can be opened or closed depending on his mood or state. If you manage to open all the chakras, Qi will flow through your body in peace, making you many times stronger and opening up new possibilities for you.
-I see, how effective is Qi?
-It's hard to say, I haven't met anyone who's been able to open all seven. The air nomads used to do it a lot, but... You know what I mean.
Spreading his hands apart, the man went back to explaining what each chakra was responsible for, as well as what feelings blocked and opened them. A little explanation turned into an entire lecture. Unlike Guan Yu, the girl asked valid and important questions that were important for someone that was encountering Qi for the first time.
After finishing her discussions, Wenling concluded that trying to open all the chakras would not be unreasonable.
-Basically, there was nothing difficult about it, if you had enough willpower and could admit your weaknesses and mistakes.
Chuckling ironically at the girl's words, Kai met her understanding gaze.
-That's why so few people open them.
-It takes a lot of time and effort, both physically and spiritually. Do you think it's worth it?
-The monks have been discovering them for centuries and their entire nation had air magic. Every air nomad could conquer the air, but not everyone was a warrior. What would happen to someone who has dedicated his entire life to the martial arts and can open all the chakras - I'm afraid to even imagine.
