Chapter 4: Chapter 4
Bryan woke up the next day to the smell of coffee and toast. Snapping his eyes open, he yawned and sat up and spotted a familiar figure heading towards him.
"You're awake." Miss Agnes nodded at him and Bryan nodded his head sloppily.
"Good morning." He greeted sleepily and she responded and he saw that he was lying on the couch.
"I would have taken you to your room but I'm sure that adolescent boys have things they don't want their guardians to see." Miss Agnes winked at him and Bryan frantically shook his head.
"It would have been fine. I'm not that kind of person." He was but there was no way he would admit it.
"Got it. I would pretend I did not see anything." Miss Agnes muttered as she did try to take him into his room.
'Despite being able to have it digitally, I wonder why boys stick with physical.cc She shook her head but Bryan noticed none of these things.
"We have an early start today. In honour of my contribution yesterday, I have been granted a week vacation." Bryan brightened up at the word vacation but he next words doused his hopes.
"I'm going to oversee your training."
...
After that, it was all a whirl of memories. He could remember spotting the lizard and taking a bath and eating but that was all. Next thing he knew, he was in the air.
"Where are we going?" He asked Agnes as the view below them turned into a blue. Despite the speeds they were flying at, he did not feel the pressure at all.
'Probably because of Maya.' He reasoned.
"A special training spot. If you want to have any chance at even getting into this continents Beast Tamer Academy, ordinary training would do. And while we're at it, give that lizard a name." She pointed and he saw the lizard dangling in a cage that was hung on Maya's neck.
"Wait, right now?" Bryan went quiet until he noticed his guardian's gaze and realized her intentions.
"The best name you can give someone is the name that pops into your head when you look at them. A name that describes the person not the name that you want them to be. That is the best kind of name you can give someone, human or beast."
'That is true.' Casting all irrelevant thoughts, Bryan stared at the lizard and said the first name that popped into his mind.
"Carl. Your name is Carl. Is that okay with you?" He directed the intention at the beast and it - Carl - nodded its head and he could sense satisfaction from it.
"You guys are done? Then I can go a little faster." Miss Agnes said and Bryan felt a tug in his stomach as the eagle went even faster and he temporarily lost his senses.
When he recovered, he found himself flying above a volcano. An active one. Lava leaked out from it and stained the surroundings as plumes of smoke rose from it to greet them in the sky.
"Welcome to our training spot for the next couple of days. But before we start, let's find a place to camp."
Bryan looked down and saw lava and wondered just where the hell she was talking about.
...
"I quite like this place." Miss Agnes said as she and Bryan looked at their home which was a house with lava running down the sides.
As for how it was built? Miss Agnes shaped up some lava with wind energy and cooled it down properly. Or so Bryan hoped.
"It's quite... homely." He carefully chose his words and headed inside. Due to the construction process, there was no door or windows and only holes where they were supposed to be.
"Isn't this quite crude for a house? Does it even have beds?" He questioned dand entered and although the outside was quite hot, there was no beating the inside of the house.
If it was not for the fact that he had no seasoning on his body, he would have suspected he was secretly being cooked. He could even smell something nice coming from his skin.
"Ow! Ow! Ow!" He hissed and began dancing, trying to find a cooler spot to place his feet.
"Don't be so tense." As her heard that voice, the surroundings cooled to an acceptable level and he was finally able to relax.
"This area is quite beneficial for you. You're planning on taking the fire route, right?" Miss Agnes said and Bryan wondered how she knew.
"Carl is primarily disposed to fire among all the other elements. This area is going to increase his affinity with fire as well as yours." Miss Agnes said and tapped her Terminal and a white light shone from it and when it disappeared, two roll up beds along with other daily necessities dropped to the floor with a gentle thud.
'Is that a storage artifact?' Bryan thought as he looked at the Terminal.
Storage artifacts are items that contain a folded up space withing them allowing for storage of items far larger than they might seem at first glance.
The items stored in a storage artifact did not add their own weight and could be used by anyone regardless of strength level.
All of that resulted in its extraordinary price. The cheapest one he saw was priced at one million credits which was more than enough for a family of ten to live off on for years.
'Just who in the world is Miss Agnes?' He knew she was not ordinary but this was just pushing it.
"Before we start, let us go over the basics of beast taming knowledge." She said as Maya entered the building having shrunk herself down to an appropriate size with Carl in her mouth.
She dropped the lizard on the hot floor and flapped her wings until she settled down on her owners head and immediately knocked herself out.
"Okay." Bryan ignored the bizarre scene and nodded as he sat down and shot back up like his motions were rewound.
"Sit." Miss Agnes said as she pulled out a foldable chair and sat atop it and gestures for him to sit on the ground.
"But-"
"Sit. It's for your own good."
"But-"
"No buts."
Bryan stared at her long and hard and gave up and planted his bum on the hot surface.
He almost felt his trousers disintegrate and placed his hands against the floor to lift himself up but it turned out to be a mistake.
There minutes and a pair of red palms later, he finally received pity and was granted a chair to sit on.
"There are a total of seven known evolution levels for beasts. From bottom to top, Normal, Rare, Elite, Super, Epic, Legendary and the rumoured Mythical level. Each level is split into nine tiers with Tier 1 as the lowest and Tier 9 as the highest." She explained and Bryan listened attentively although he already knew that.
"At each level, both the beast tamer and their beast gain a unique skill. The skill gained is completely random but it is always useful. No exceptions. In order to have the slightest hope of passing the Beast Tamer Academy exam, you will need at least two skills. On other words, we are going to make you a Rare level beast tamer."
...
"Agnes!" Aan with a stocky build yelled in a gruff voice as he sat behind a desk in a wide office that had a view overlooking the city below.
"She's on vacation sir." Standing next to the wall was a blonde haired woman with spectacles who wore a suit and held a folder with her hands.
" Seriously? Who gave her the vacation?" The man asked and the woman sighed.
"You did, sir. She recently became a guardian for Bryan so you wanted to give them some time to bond as a family. Remember?"
"AHHH! I remember now. What in the world possessed me to do so when we had work to do?" The man groaned as he looked to the icon floating in the corner of his vision and tapped on it.
Immediately after, electronic documents filled his eyes and he groaned at the sheer amount that threatened to give him a headache from just looking at it.
"One thousand and thirty three... I can't finish this on my own." He glanced in the direction of the woman only to see her slowly sinking and saw that her shadow had turned into a sort of viscous liquid.
"Hey! Don't escape without me!" The man yelled and the woman just waved and disappeared.
"Damn it. How dare her treat the mayor this way." The man said and swiped his hand and the documents shrunk.
All with the exception of one.
"Bryan Herrman. I see he's applying for Beast Tamer Academy. Interesting." The man's atmosphere shifted and he gazed at the place it was required for him to place his approval.
"Charlotte dear." He muttered and a green puff of smoke appeared as a two headed snake appeared.
The snake hissed and stiffened up and he grabbed it and tapped on the electronic document and signed it.
"Let's see whether you can live up to your parent's legacy."
