Chapter 31: Chapter 30: Enemies and Allies
"Daddy's Girl," Luke smirked. "So, what was that about calling me a coward?"
Chloe hurriedly made several attempts at defending herself, trying to conjure up barriers of water and wind. Nevertheless, her efforts were rendered useless when the shard struck and sent her crashing to the ground. The blast sent a huge burst of steam which obscured her from view.
As the steam began to clear, Luke hear the chime of the familiar system in his mind.
"Ding, qualified individual detected."
"Chloe Carter. High qualification. Conquer to gain rewards."
Luke raised his eyebrows. It was a surprise, after all, and not completely unwelcome. One could clearly see that she was a person of extreme skill and fire.
"Now, this just got interesting," muttered Luke, with a grin.
While Tina Baine was a beginning-level mage, she was still reeling from the consequences left behind after the double battle in the Snowpeak Mountain Station. Much of the damage done during their fight was staggering at best.
Luke woke to hear a heavy thudding sound from somewhere nearby.
"Please don't be Luke… please don't be Luke…," Tina whispers as she creeps toward the source of the noise, hands clasped in silent prayer.
Tina knew that Chloe was an influential leader of the Southern Military Region, boasting among the most advanced magical gear one could think of. Still, Chloe had sustained injuries during the skirmish. On the other hand, Luke actually lacked the gear to stand against such intense assault. In other words, her fears were that Luke must have got it worse.
The thick fog created by Chloe's Aqua Shield spell hid all but the front of her field of vision, suggesting that she moved carefully. There was a sodden softness beneath her foot, and suddenly, something made her nearly trip. Heart pounding, Tina hesitated for a second before going down to check who or what she had found.
"Ahem!" The cough was thin and weak.
"It's a woman!" Tina's eyes widened. "Sister Chloe, are you all right?"
For Ilene, seeing her dear friend Chloe Carter lying hardly conscious made her let out a huge sigh of relief and bosom shock. "It's only you, Tutu..." she coughed another mouthful of blood.
For a moment, Chloe's pride hurt more than her injuries. If Tanya had been standing over her instead of her friend Tutu, she would have felt quite humiliated. Chloe had been trained into the military tradition to meet all hits squarely, but being pitied by a fellow soldier was a horrible thought.
"I'm fine," she said, though the tattered and charred fragments of her magical armor said otherwise as she gingerly touched her cheek and flinched from the stabbing pain.
Sister Chloe... Your face!" Tina gasped, guilt taking over her eyes as they wandered to Chloe's damaged cheek. "Luke really went too far! How could he hit you like that?"
Chloe's fingers trembled as they brushed her swollen face. Anger swelled up inside her. "That bastard!" Her voice raced through the mist with its dreadful tenor. "He does this to me? He's going to regret it!"
As a commander in the field, this was not to matter for Chloe; but she knew her face would certainly be the cause of some degrading punishment, one that, probably, would lead to her loss of credibility in front of the very people who had been upon her all the time.
"Luke?" Chloe suddenly asked with squinted eyes. "Tutu, do you know this man?"
Tina hesitated at that thought; she had, with it, gone far. "Oh, well, sort of..." she mumbled as her hands shot up to cover her mouth.
"Who is he?" Chloe's voice was whatever you want it to be. "This isn't over. I, Chloe Carter, will make him pay for this!"
Tina shook her head wildly. "Sister Chloe, don't be mad! So please don't be angry! Luke is a good person! He saved me earlier! He killed over a hundred Inferno Wolves and even more Fire Wolves to protect me!"
Chloe froze, for a moment stunned by disbelief, and asked, "He…saved you?" she asked incredulously. "And killed so many demons?"
Tina nodded. "If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be standing here."
Chloe's gaze darkened with the words she had processed. Could the man who had slapped her twice really be the one who risked his life to save Tina?
"But Sister Chloe, where is Marissa?" With concern in her tone, Tina continued. "We got split apart in the forest, and I thought she'd be here by now."
Chloe turned pale at the mention of Marissa Jones. Her teeth ground together tightly, creating a small tremble in her fists.
"She was taken," Chloe answered steadily, her voice almost inaudible. "By the Volcanic Poison Wolf."
