Chapter 212: Chapter 212: Believe in the Power of Money
The convoy pulled up in front of a three-story building within the hotel grounds. As the cars stopped, six men in black suits got out, five surrounding William's car while one went inside to coordinate with the ten or so people already inside the building. Only after ensuring security did William enter the hotel under heavy protection.
Upon reaching the third floor, William looked around his suite with some dissatisfaction. Apart from its size, nothing else met his standards. The only redeeming feature was the view of the beach and the ocean. After taking in the scenery for a bit, Christmas knocked and entered, "Boss, we've brought him. Would you like to see him now?"
"Wait a moment. Christmas, take some people to the Swiss National Bank branch here in Freetown. Someone will be waiting for you. Withdraw five million dollars for me."
Christmas nodded, "Okay, Boss."
William then called his exclusive client manager, Felix, at the bank, asking him to prepare the money. After hanging up, he ate something and took a shower. When he finally came out to the living room, he saw Solomon, looking quite nervous.
An hour earlier, Solomon had been working as a bellhop at the hotel, helping guests with their luggage when he was suddenly stopped by three large men in suits and sunglasses. The sudden appearance of these three men, all over two meters tall, nearly scared him to death. As he tried to regain his composure, he heard a voice behind him, "Sorry to disturb you."
Turning around quickly, he saw another large bald man in a suit staring curiously at him. With four white men looking at him, Solomon stammered, "Are you speaking to me, sir?"
"Yes," Christmas nodded. "What's your name?"
"Sir, I'm Solomon Fandey. How can I help you?"
"You're Solomon Fandey?" Christmas finally understood why William wanted to meet this man who, apart from being physically imposing, seemed unremarkable. Smiling, Christmas said, "Mr. Fandey, please come with me; someone wants to meet you."
Christmas gestured for Solomon to follow and started walking towards the back of the hotel. Solomon, bewildered, said, "Sir, there must be some mistake. I'm just a porter." Before he could finish, a large man behind him pushed him forward, "Keep moving."
Under the watchful eyes of the three large men in black suits, Solomon had no choice but to follow Christmas.
With heavy thoughts, Solomon followed Christmas and the others to the hotel's most secluded guesthouse, carefully entering the living room on the third floor. The sight of a dozen expressionless guards with weapons nearly scared him half to death.
After finishing his shower, William waited for Christmas to return with the money before calling Solomon in.
As he entered, Solomon saw a young, excessively handsome man, about 1.9 meters tall, holding a glass of wine and looking at him from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Realizing that William was the boss, Solomon bowed respectfully, "Hello, sir. I am Solomon Fandey. How can I help you?"
William got straight to the point, "Tell me where the pink diamond is. If you do, the money is yours," he said, pulling out a stack of $200,000 in cash from a large bag on the table and tossing it in front of Solomon.
Seeing the stack of cash casually thrown on the table, Solomon's heart raced, and he stammered, "I'm sorry, sir. I don't know what you're talking about."
William chuckled, "No, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Perhaps you don't know who I am. Let me introduce myself, Mr. Fandey. I'm William Devonshire, an Englishman, heir to the Earl of Oxford, and a billionaire worth over a hundred billion dollars. So, Mr. Fandey, rest assured, I won't steal that diamond from you because what I want isn't the stone; I want you."
Solomon was stunned, unable to close his mouth. He couldn't fathom why a billionaire like William would want anything from him, other than the pink diamond. Hesitating for a few seconds, Solomon shook his head, "Mr. Devonshire, I'm just a porter. I've never heard of any diamond. You must be mistaken."
"Alright," William interrupted Solomon, "Tell me what you want. As long as it's not too much, I can agree to it. I can even help you find your wife and children."
Hearing that William could help find his family, Solomon couldn't hide his emotions any longer. He took a few steps forward, but before he could get closer than three meters to William, Barney pushed him back to where he had been standing.
Barney loosened his suit, revealing a holstered gun, "Stay where you are. If you make any threatening moves, I will shoot you."
"Understood, sir," Solomon, terrified at the sight of Barney's gun, stammered, "I'm sorry, sir. I promise I won't move."
"Alright, Barney, don't scare Mr. Fandey," William said, patting Barney's shoulder.
Barney, aware of William's combat skills, had reacted instinctively to Solomon's sudden movement. Hearing William, Barney nodded to Solomon, who then, visibly shaken, thanked Barney before standing stiffly in place, "Mr. Devonshire, can you really help me find my family?"
"Ha ha, Mr. Fandey, believe in the power of money. As long as your family is alive, I can help you find them."
Staring at the stack of cash on the table and thinking about his family, whom he had been separated from for nearly a month, Solomon didn't hesitate long before his eyes firmed, "If you can find my family and get us out of this country, I will take you to the pink diamond for free."
William smiled, "Solomon, as I said, I won't take your diamond. According to the black market price, blood diamonds in Sierra Leone are worth about one-tenth of the normal price. I will give you three million dollars for that diamond. Additionally, if you're willing to do me a favor, I will relocate your family to Switzerland or England to live in seclusion."
Such generous terms made Solomon, initially overwhelmed, calm down. Worryingly, he asked, "Mr. Devonshire, what can a person like me do for you?"
William didn't answer directly but asked instead, "Has anyone approached you recently about the diamond?"
"Ah," Solomon was surprised, "Yes, a white man asked me about the diamond in the slums outside the city yesterday. I didn't tell him and ran away."
"Good, Solomon. What I need you to do is to bring that man to a location I specify. To show my sincerity, I will first help you find your family there."
"Really? My God, Mr. Devonshire, if you find my family, I will do anything for you, even die if necessary," Solomon pledged with unusual fervor.
"Ha ha, don't worry, Solomon. I don't need you to die. All I need is for you to act naturally in front of certain people."
"Act?"
"Yes, act," William replied with a smile.
