Collecting Titles In The Apocalypse

Chapter 10: Candidate

At noon on that day, the troops returned. With them were unexpectedly the remains of the Demonic Tuna.

Dante asked the manager what they were going to do with its remains. It wasn't weird if they were using it in some lab testing like in some movies, to figure out their weaknesses and such, but Dante was still wondering if that was their true motive.

He guessed that they would be experimenting with it, but her response to him was unexpectedly shocking. According to her, high-rank demonic creatures could be a good source of important materials needed for making and improving battlesuits. She also said that its Demonic Blood can be made into an effective medicine to strengthen and increase Agent Warriors' stats.

Dante felt like the reality he used to know started crumbling.

Am I living inside a novel now? He couldn't help but question.

Anyhow, thanks to Agent Black who fights against such frightening creatures. It was the reason why the city was still safe from these kinds of creatures.

Speaking of Agent Black, she lost consciousness after vomiting a lot of blood. It seemed that her last attack was already beyond her limit. Her body couldn't handle the backlash any longer and gave out. She was retrieved by the special unit and immediately rushed for medical treatment. Dante didn't know where they brought her because it was confidential. The organization had enough medical facilities so he believed she should be fine.

Still, he secretly prayed for her fast recovery and thanked her for her bravery.

As of the moment, he was heading to the VIP room again; this time, to discuss his assignment in the organization. It seemed they wanted to make him a sidekick to a newly recruited Agent Warrior.

Dante suddenly stopped on his feet and looked outside the window.

It was a bright noon.

After witnessing the battle between Agent Black and the demonic creature, Dante had a heap of thoughts regarding the world at the moment.

He let out a sigh and then continued to the VIP room, where Miss Kendra was waiting. And once again, he had to listen to her lecture.

His job as a sidekick was just simple according to her. To help and assist an agent warrior.

'Simple my ass. It's only simple in thoughts,' Dante couldn't help but complain inwardly.

Based on what she said, since he was to assist an agent warrior, it also meant he had to be there right beside the agent at times of duty. With that said, when the agent would be sent to the battlefield, he also had to be there. Dante's face lost all colors when he heard it.

Doesn't that mean he had to participate in the battle as well? He would be exposed to danger!

"Wait!" He raised his hand. "Can I choose to be assigned to a different unit?" He asked firmly.

Hearing him, Miss Kendra made a thinking gesture. "Hm… I think you can. But so far, aside from being the assistant of an agent warrior, there are only two other available choices you can choose."

Upon hearing it, Dante felt a ray of hope descending. He was fine with anything as long as it was not to face such a creature in person. Out of happiness, he asked in an excited tone, "What are the other choices?!"

"The first one is to volunteer as the explorer of the Apocalypse Islands."

Dante's face turned white. "Anything but that," he mumbled. A while ago, Miss Kendra told him about those islands. And for what he remembered, those islands were nothing but certain death. It was the lair of all types of hostile unnatural creatures.

Well, she said there were two options.

"Uhm, how about the second one?" He had high hopes for it.

"The second one is to become an Agent Warrior. But seeing that you can't activate your System, there's no way you can manipulate your Qi aura, therefore you can't wear the Advanced Battlesuit like the Valkyria. Without the Advanced Battlesuit, you're like a sitting duck in front of a demonic creature even against the lowest rank of it."

Dante gulped silently. He knew in that moment, his fate was sealed. He ought to die on the battlefield like a mob.

After their meeting, Dante was required to train. This time, it wasn't only exercises. He was brought to the training field where he saw multiple people in black shirts and fatigue pants learning combat.

Dante followed the person who was assigned to lead him. He was brought in front of an uncle in military attire. Just by standing in front of him, he could feel the overbearing aura he was exuding. He looked like a strict trainer. The 'X' scar on his face looked intimidating.

"Lieutenant Alexander, this one here is the new kid. He'll be assisting our new agent. I hope you can do something to shape him up."

The lieutenant looked at Dante as if sizing him from top to bottom.

As if disappointed, he said in a dispirited tone, "He looks so tender…"

Well, compared to the other people around, Dante looked like a duckling compared to them. What could he do? He wasn't an athletic person. And it was only a few days ago that he started exercising, albeit against his will. So, most of his muscles were underdeveloped.

"Is this a direct command from the higher-ups?" The lieutenant asked. It seemed even he was skeptical to bring him under his guidance.

"It's Manager Grayhams who had direct authority over him."

Upon hearing it, there was an obvious change in the lieutenant's face. "Is that so? I see. Since it was the Miss who requested it, I can only meet her expectations," he suddenly looked determined as he said it.

Internally, Lieutenant Alexander wondered what the manager saw in this wimpy kid. But since it was her, she probably had a reason for recruiting this kid.

"Alright, I leave him to you," said the person who led Dante there.

The lieutenant nodded and said, "Tell the manager I'll make this kid into a new person after a month." The person nodded and left. Dante was left with the lieutenant. "Let's do this kid. But don't die on me!"

A chill ran down Dante's spine.

The lieutenant called a burly person and gave him some instructions. Listening to them, he couldn't help but gulp inwardly. It looked like they were planning something against him.

In the middle of the night, Dante fell to the ground. His body felt heavy and his legs felt so numb. While helplessly lying on the ground, he was surrounded by K9 dogs.

"Bite me all you want," Dante said weakly. He gave up running. There was no more strength on his legs and even lifting a finger was a difficult task. These dogs were chasing him from dusk to midnight.

He heard someone say, "He finally collapsed. Hahaha!"

At that moment, his consciousness slipped away. This is fine, he could finally rest eternally. Even if he died right now, Dante would be glad to accept it. He was very tired. Perhaps dying was the best for him.

No! I don't want to die yet! He suddenly shouted internally. This was his true feeling. He wanted to live a long life. No matter what, he wanted to live.

He noticed he was surrounded by darkness. Dante thought to himself, 'Am I inside a dream?'

'I must open my eyes and continue running, otherwise, the dogs will have a good fest on me.' But no matter what he did, nothing happened. It was still all dark around him.

Suddenly, while his consciousness was hovering in the dark, a weird tone rang.

[Ding!]

A voice echoed, but he couldn't see the speaker. It seemed like the voice didn't come into his ears but directly went to his head.

[Ding!]
