Chapter 4: Experiment
The woman seemed to be wondering why he suddenly looked scared. But when she noticed where Dante was staring at, she glanced behind her.
Noticing one of her companions was approaching them with a pistol in his hand, her brow twitched. It seemed like she was about to say something in rage. However, that didn't happen as she suddenly stopped and struck a pose while touching her eyeglasses.
Dante could feel her cold gaze at him when her eyeglass flashed a white gleam.
A second later, she was grinning wickedly.
"Hehehe…"
"?"
Question mark floated above Dante's head. His back turned stiff and a chill ran down his spine suddenly. He suddenly felt she was up for something not good for him.
"Wait! A-Are you going to kill me after getting me in this trouble by mistake?!" He complained stutteringly. He could feel his skin turning pale. It couldn't be helped, her expression creeping him out.
"Heh~" she sneered. Dante noticed her demeanor was different from a moment ago. It seemed she was a different person all of a sudden. "It's not only our fault that you were dragged into this!" She said in a cold voice.
Dante frowned at what he heard.
'What nonsense this woman is spouting?'
"What are you talking about? It's clearly you guys are the one that mistook me for someone and brought me here!"
"Yeah, I can't deny that. Our men were indeed at fault also for mistaking you for Kyzer, our main target. However…" she paused for a moment and leaned closer to whisper to him. Then she continued saying, "…the big part of it that you're in this situation right now is yourself," she stepped back and pointed at him with a mocking grin. "So, this is also your fault! Hahaha!"
Her villainous laughs rang into his ears like a curse.
"What? T-That's nonsense. How is this my fault? Aren't you making an excuse only?!" He couldn't believe she made it look like it was his fault that he was abducted by them. What kind of BS was that?! He wanted to complain from the bottom of his heart but he knew it was to no avail in his current situation.
"Hehehe. Seems like you don't realize yet, but your bad luck is what gotten you into this trouble."
"What? B-bad luck…?" Dante stammered.
Hearing her words, he found himself couldn't refute. That was indeed true. His bad luck was pretty bad lately.
"But…"
He was about to say something when he noticed a shadow beside him. Now, standing right beside him, the giant pointed his pistol directly at Dante's head.
"Gulp…"
A gulping could be heard as he swallowed back his saliva.
'Am I going to die here? Because of my bad luck?'
He couldn't help asking that to himself as he glanced at the muzzle which was only an inch away from his temple. His heartbeat ran wilder when the hammer of the pistol was pulled by the man's thumb, producing a clicking noise.
All colors left Dante's body and his mind turned blank. Still, he needed to not lose his mind. He had to remain calm and think.
However, what could he do in that situation?
Before it was pulled, "Wait!", the woman suddenly shouted.
Dante secretly sighed in relief, he saw a glimmer of hope. He looked back at the woman and saw her leaning closer again as if to whisper at him.
"There's still a way to skip death in this situation," she said in a serious tone.
It seemed like he was right. There's hope in the midst of storm.
"W-what is it?" He replied autonomously. The only thing that was on his mind at that moment was that he wanted to live longer.
Despite wishing to disappear after having his heart broken, it seemed like the fear of death overcame him instead.
She stepped back again. Then she said to him while crossing her arms, "By allowing you to join the project."
He didn't get what she meant about 'this project' she mentioned, but he felt a foreboding feeling that it was a shady one.
Dante fell silent as he was wondering what to do.
"Project? What project?" He was able to squish the question out of his mouth.
"It's a project that will greatly help humanity's future."
"T-that sounded like an ideal project… haha," he tried to laugh it off, but turns out his voice was trembling.
Suddenly, he jolted nervously when something cold pressed on his temple. It was the muzzle of the pistol.
"A-Alright… I will participate!" He quickly gave up response without much thought.
He didn't even have a choice in the first place. He could only accept their offer against his will.
He heard the other giant ask the woman if she was sure about letting Dante participate in the project.
The woman stared at him with an annoyed expression, but eventually replied with a "Yes, of course. We can't waste any useful resources."
They were talking as if he wasn't a human at all. Dante felt dejected. Was his value as a human that worthless to them? How cruel…
The giant told her that there was only one product left and that one was meant for the boy named Kyzer.
Dante wondered what product they were talking about at that moment. But he was certain that there was no way for him to learn it at that time, or would they give him an answer if he asked them? He doubted that.
She replied that she knew about it. And she also disclosed that there was another product besides the special one.
He noticed the giant looked shocked when he heard that.
"Eh? Do you want us to become crim—!!"
But before he could finish his words, a tablet was slammed on his face.
"Stop running out your mouth! You fvcking idiots!" She suddenly threw it into his face and roared like a demoness.
Dante? He was stunned and in shock at that moment, though he had a feeling they were trying to hide something from him.
He noticed a bead of sweat on his face at the giant who was pointing his pistol at him. It looked like he was as stunned as him.
To his shock, the trigger was pulled without him realizing it. Dante's eyes turned wide and his body froze when the clicking entered his ear.
Before he noticed it, his consciousness was slipping away. But before his consciousness was fully swallowed by darkness, he heard him utter, "Uh, my bad. I subconsciously pulled the trigger."
"….."
Anyways, he was very surprised when his consciousness came back. He thought he was dead for sure.
He noticed he was lying on a bed with no feeling in his lower body. His body was numb and he couldn't muster any strength.
Dante also noticed some people in white coats with their faces covered by white masks. The first thing that entered his mind when he saw them was that they were nurses or doctors. Perhaps they managed to run him to the nearby hospital. But, nope. They were not doctors or nurses. They were expert researchers of the organization.
He heard one of them spoke about his vitals. She said all vitals were normal and that installing the program was possible.
Then they were talking about some synchronization and whatnot. He had no idea what they were doing, but he understood that he was not in a situation where he could ask them.
Regardless, after that, one of them let out a shock utterance.
"Holy, this kid has a superhuman level of mental power!"
'What the heck did that mean?' Dante thought. Well, he knew that his mental strength was higher than most people. That was one of the good things in him that he could be proud of. The other good things about him were… wait. It was better to give him more time to think about it seriously.
"Oh, you're awake? Wow! Even in that condition, you regained your consciousness? You're indeed something, kid. Too bad the special program is not meant for you… Well, let's just pray the undiscard sample will not give any side effects or any complications to you."
He sounded like a good man, but honestly, he didn't know what he was talking about.
He wanted to ask him about it, but there was something more important he had in mind at that moment.
He tried to open his mouth and asked him how he survived. He looked at him with a puzzled expression in his eyes.
Dante told him how he was shot in the head by a pistol. The man laughed and told him that it was just a tranquilizer.
"What?"
That shocked him. No wonder he didn't hear a loud bang when the trigger was pulled.
As his gaze wandered around the room, he noticed his reflection on the steel frame of one of the handlebars of the lights above him. In the reflection, he saw his figure with so many apparatus attached to him. As if he was a person experiencing dialysis.
His eyes suddenly grew wider. He noticed his skull was open.
"Waaa…. Waaaaa!!!" He started screaming before he knew it. He felt like he was going crazy.
He heard the people around him shouting, "Put him back to sleep! Fast!"
Thus, his consciousness went blank again.
