Chapter 14: Duel Invitation

"Who allowed you to speak to me like this, miscellaneous cultivator!!"

Zavia's tone was cold, not as inflammatory as some rappers, nor was there any anger that could be felt, only the coldness of an icy land and the arrogance of looking down from above.

"Wha--"

Upon hearing Zavia's words, the man was clearly shocked. The two by his side had the same expression.

"You actually dare to speak to Lord Ross like this! Do you want to die?!"

The first to react was the marine trainee to the left of the man. He had the appearance of a rat, with thief's eyebrows and small eyes.

"Ross? Lord? Hmm, sorry, I've never heard of any Ross before, but I do know someone called Sephiroth. Do you want me to introduce him to you?" Facing this rat-like marine, Zavia only gave a cold laugh.

"You--"

"Forget it, Rat Eyes." Hearing Zavia's words full of ridicule, the marine who looked like a rat was about to say something, but was stopped by Ross next to him.

"Humph. Just a dog who got in by connections. I don't know what's there to be smug about."

In the face of Zavia's cold laughter, Ross also showed an indifferent attitude, likewise returning a cold humph to Zavia along with ridicule.

"Hmm, connections? Are you trying to say I got in because of that old guy Garp?"

Revealing Dante's signature contemptuous sneer, Zavia's icy blue eyes stared at Ross as they flashed a hint of blue light.

"You actually call the navy hero an old guy! That's disrespect! Going against superiors!"

Ross didn't directly answer Zavia's question. Instead, he grabbed onto something like he discovered a loophole. He "surprisingly" looked at Zavia as he spoke, his voice even "accidentally" raising by a few levels.

Upon hearing Ross' voice, the other trainees who had just completed training and were resting suddenly became interested. They all rushed over, also wanting to see who was the idiot daring to call the navy hero an old guy.

Seeing the trainees constantly coming over, Zavia didn't have the slightest ripple in his heart. In fact, he even felt a little like laughing. At the same time he also felt a bit helpless.

(Sigh... Is this really the Pirate World? Why does everyone have brains like this? Speaking of which, what kind of soap opera twist is this?)

Zavia knew this all too familiar scenario. The typical urban high school twist where the new student gets threatened by some delinquents, some even deliberately raise their voices like now to humiliate the new student in front of an audience.

How could Zavia not be familiar with such plots? Although Zavia didn't read many urban novels, which high school anime didn't use this? Especially those with superpowers. This kind of situation would definitely happen once the protagonist enters school.

What made Zavia not expect was that he originally thought he kept a low enough profile, yet still encountered this kind of thing. How could he not be speechless?

However, thinking about it this way, Zavia then had a question. Why did almost everyone know he was recommended by Garp to join the navy? Could it be someone deliberately tried to smear Garp's name? This question had no answer for now.

Back to the present, faced with this situation, the Zavia from before definitely wouldn't have had the guts for this. After all, two fists were no match for four hands, let alone the fact that Zavia was facing more than just four hands.

But now, why would Zavia not dare be arrogant? To put it simply, since becoming Vergil, he could easily discern the difference in strength between others and himself.

Zavia didn't know the reason for this. Like many powerful warriors, just a glance or brief sense was enough to determine if the opponent was stronger or weaker than himself.

Perhaps this had to do with the power within Zavia...

Therefore, the conclusion was that Zavia very clearly felt that the Ross before him was nothing more than a typical young master who relied on his family's wealth and influence to develop such arrogance.

"Sigh, using this move huh? How boring, you are."

Letting out a sigh, Zavia spoke in a tone both helpless and cold. At the same time, the icy blue eyes were filled with contempt.

"Oh well, since you want to attract a crowd to watch the show, then watch as you will. I'll just take this chance to raise my fame a bit. At the same time, let you all know how stupid it is to smear Garp's name!"

Leaning against the tree, Zavia gradually stood straight. His crossed arms lifted the right hand wearing a half-fingered glove. It clenched in midair with cracking sounds from his fingers.

Standing straight, Zavia was half a head taller than Ross. Yet just this half head made an illusion appear before Ross' eyes.

As if standing naked in an extremely cold tundra, while a massive several ten thousand meter tall iceberg towered before him. He could only stand in place looking up, unable to see the unseen peak.

"...Humph! You're saying you want to get famous from this? Have you gone dumb? I'm the young master of the Maris Family! Saying you want to get famous in front of me? Go die from laughter!"

After recovering to normal, Ross straightened that somewhat trembling body of his. Although his tone was a bit halting, it was still rather coherent. However, the trembling emotions already betrayed how he truly felt to Zavia.

(Yo~ As expected, just like I guessed. This guy is just trash, even starting to announce his household.) Seeing how Ross seemed steady on the outside but was actually panicking badly on the inside, Zavia couldn't help but chuckle. A trace of ridicule showed on his face.

"Maris Family? Never heard of it. Some tiny noble house from some place?"

"Wha--! You dare say my family are small nobles!? Let me tell you! My father is a Lieutenant Commander! Be careful or I'll have him kick you out of the navy!"

Hearing Zavia's mocking words, Ross' face instantly flushed red. He pointed at Zavia yelling threats. Of course, the redness was from anger he was holding in, not embarrassment.

(He still hasn't directly attacked? Interesting. Seems this guy still has some brains.)

Seeing that Ross only raised his hand and didn't outright attack, Zavia felt a tiny bit disappointed inside. He was hoping to anger the other into hitting him first. Then he could push the crime of bullying the new student before an audience onto Ross. He didn't expect...

"Lieutenant Commander huh. That should be quite a big shot right? Oh well, doesn't matter. In any case, just that level. Speaking of which, you didn't come find me just to say those words earlier right? Since you don't like seeing me, then let's duel. The navy should have some rules to let students duel right?"

Getting straight to the point, Zavia didn't hold back against the other at all. Doesn't matter what family or nobility or Lieutenant Commander you are. Right now it's just you alone. What can you do to me? At worst one dies one lives right?

"That's right! I agree to this duel!"

Suddenly, a gruff voice came from the crowd. Looking towards the voice, it was surprisingly the stubble-chinned Lieutenant from yesterday that Zavia saw.

"Eh--! Uncle Evan... Instructor!"

Seeing the newcomer, Ross' face was filled with shock. Clearly he recognized this stubble-chinned Lieutenant.

"Since you're talking about a duel, then I agree to this duel. No problem right?"

Pushing through the circle the students made, the navy Lieutenant directly walked to the space between Zavia and Ross facing Zavia.

"Hmm, no problem."

"But! Uncle Evan... Instructor! If students want to duel, there should at least be two instructors!" Hearing how readily Zavia agreed, Ross panicked in an instant. He immediately tried finding an excuse to slip away.

"No problem, Ross. I already knew something like this would happen today. That's why I brought Instructor Marty over too."

Placing his arm over Ross' shoulder, Evan gave Ross a look showing no issues before pointing a finger towards another instructor in the crowd.

That was a brawny man with short black hair, dressed in a gray suit and draped in a navy overcoat of justice. His brown eyes were staring at Zavia with utmost seriousness.

Seeing the instructor in the crowd, Zavia only glanced once before ignoring him.

To be frank, Zavia's actions were a bit rude. After all, the other party was Zavia's head teacher in charge of his class - Marty Nathalegawa, a navy Lieutenant. However, his strength was above a normal Lieutenant's level. He simply didn't want to get promoted.

Walking through the path the students made way for, Marty arrived before Zavia. His face was so dark that Zavia could guess his current mood.

"Instructor Marty, what do you think about this duel?"

"I object!" The deep voice uttered four words, making everyone who heard it feel as if they sensed the tremors before a volcanic eruption.

"Oh come on, Instructor Marty. Duels can let students deepen their friendship and tacit understanding. It's also a chance to temper their skills. One stone two birds. Isn't that good?"

"I object!" Still the same four words. Marty did not change his decision.

"Wait, Instructor Marty. I must accept this duel." Before Evan could speak, Zavia directly cut in. Although this was very impolite, interrupting a superior's speech was a huge taboo. But Zavia didn't care.

"Oh? Reason?"

"I need fame."

"Why?"

"To become Admiral Z's disciple!"

The moment these words came out, the entire crowd went silent. Not a single person said anything because everyone's expressions were shocked.

"Then do you know, to become Admiral Z's disciple has nothing to do with fame?"

"I know. But fame can make Admiral Z pay more attention to me and feel I'm worthy teaching material!"

Hearing Zavia's words, Marty who originally had a dark expression suddenly revealed a helpless look.

"Fine. I agree to this duel!"
