Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Guardian’s Trial
Kang Jiho's fingers curled tightly around his spectral dagger as the Guardian rose to its full height. The creature's black robes shifted like liquid, shadows dripping off its form, pooling onto the obsidian floor beneath it. Its glowing violet eyes burned with cold indifference, as though Jiho's existence was nothing but a fleeting inconvenience.
"Prove yourself… or be consumed by the Nexus."
The Guardian's voice reverberated through the chamber, each word punctuated by a low, pulsing hum. Jiho's system chimed in his ear:
Guardian of the Nexus Fragment: Shadow Sovereign
Threat Level: S-Rank
"S-Rank?" Jiho muttered, his brow furrowing. "They really don't like holding back, huh?"
The moment Jiho moved, the Guardian attacked. Its massive form surged forward unnaturally fast, its robe-like body spreading wide. From the shadows it cast, jagged spikes erupted from the ground, forcing Jiho to leap to the side.
"Shadow Veil."
His body blurred into a wisp of darkness, allowing him to narrowly escape as the spikes shattered against the stone walls behind him. Jiho reappeared ten meters away, crouched and focused. He analyzed the creature's movements.
The Guardian didn't give him time to breathe. With a wave of its arm, dozens of shadowy tendrils shot forward, lashing through the air. Jiho darted between them, his reflexes heightened by experience and the subtle influence of his Nexus-bonded powers.
"Rule Bender: Solidify Shadows."
He flicked his wrist, extending his ability toward the Guardian's tendrils. The tendrils froze mid-air, shifting from fluid darkness into brittle matter. Jiho wasted no time. He dashed forward and slashed through the tendrils with his dagger, sending shards of black energy scattering across the chamber.
The Guardian's head turned slowly to Jiho, almost as if it were acknowledging his skill. Then it raised its hand, and the chamber darkened. The violet glow of the runes dimmed, swallowed by an overwhelming wave of black energy. Jiho's heartbeat quickened.
This is bad.
The darkness swirled around the Guardian, condensing into a singular form—an enormous, ethereal blade that hung in the air above it. Jiho's system blared warnings:
Nexus Energy Surge Detected.
Shadow Sovereign: Manifestation of Absolute Darkness
The blade crashed down, splitting the chamber in half. Jiho activated Shadow Veil again, his body slipping into invisibility just as the energy shockwave erupted outward. The sheer force sent cracks rippling through the walls and shattered several of the stone pillars holding up the chamber's roof.
Jiho reappeared at the edge of the room, panting slightly as he stared at the aftermath. A deep trench had been carved into the floor, the obsidian stone scorched and broken.
"Alright," Jiho muttered, flexing his fingers. "If it's going all out, so will I."
He focused, drawing on the power that had fused with him during his first encounter with the Nexus. His vision shifted—the shadows no longer felt oppressive. They were familiar, his to control.
"Rule Bender: Absorb Nexus Shadows."
The Guardian paused, its head tilting as if sensing Jiho's intent. The swirling darkness that surrounded it began to fragment, tiny strands of shadow peeling away and flowing toward Jiho. His body trembled as the energy entered him, his veins glowing faintly violet.
Shadow Energy Absorbed.
Skill Unlocked: Sovereign's Step
Jiho grinned faintly. Let's see how you handle this.
He activated the new skill.
In an instant, Jiho's figure blurred—not from speed, but as if he were melting into the very shadows of the room. The Guardian swung its ethereal blade again, but Jiho was already gone, reappearing directly behind it.
"Rule Bender: Solidify Shadows."
Jiho extended his ability to the Guardian itself. For a brief moment, the creature's form turned rigid—its flowing robes became stone-like. Jiho didn't hesitate. He drove his spectral dagger into the Guardian's back, violet energy crackling through the chamber as the blade pierced its core.
The Guardian let out a deep, resonating cry as its form began to crumble. The shadows holding it together dispersed into the air like smoke. Jiho stepped back, watching as the once-terrifying entity collapsed onto the ground, reduced to nothing but violet embers.
The system chimed:
Guardian Defeated.
Nexus Fragment Claimed: Shadow Sovereign's Core.
A pulse of energy spread through the room, and Jiho felt it sink into his body—powerful, overwhelming, but controlled. He exhaled slowly, steadying himself as the glowing embers faded away.
At the far end of the chamber, the massive throne hummed with energy. Jiho approached it cautiously, his footsteps echoing.
As he touched the stone, his vision darkened.
"The Throne is only the beginning, Walker."
The voice was deeper, older, as though it echoed from the Nexus itself. Jiho blinked as his surroundings returned to normal, and a new notification appeared before him:
Nexus Throne Activated.
Access to Deeper Nexus Layers Granted.
Jiho exhaled. "Great. I'm really digging myself in deeper, aren't I?"
As Jiho exited the dungeon, stepping back into the real world, the familiar sensation of cool night air washed over him. He expected silence—but instead, voices echoed from nearby.
"Hurry! I'm sure the Gate appeared over here!"
Jiho's gaze snapped toward the source. A group of Hunters in Silver Fang Guild uniforms was approaching, led by a sharp-eyed woman with long, dark hair tied into a ponytail. Her presence was commanding, even from a distance.
Jiho sighed under his breath. "Of course. Trouble already."
The woman's eyes locked onto him as the group drew closer. She slowed her steps, suspicion flickering across her expression.
"You. Who are you?"
For a moment, Jiho considered lying—but the faint violet glow still lingering around his body made that pointless. He stuffed his hands into his coat pockets and smirked faintly.
"Just a guy passing through."
