Chapter 14: Hospital Visit
The peace of the train ride was eventually disrupted as rush-hour commuters poured in at every stop. The once-quiet space was filled with the hum of voices, the shuffling of feet, and the occasional laughter of passengers.
With the influx of people came the inevitable stares, whispers, and intrusive intents.
Kira could feel them.
Amidst the crowd, her attention was drawn to a man sitting directly across from her. His eyes lingered on her face, his expression neutral, but his thoughts betrayed him.
Kira tuned in reluctantly, bracing herself. She sensed admiration—an appreciation of her beauty—but there was something darker lurking beneath.
His inner monologue unfolded, each thought like a whisper in her mind:
"So young... so stunning. More beautiful than my daughter, even. The women at the office can't compare. If only I could talk to her... If only—"
Kira severed the connection abruptly, her stomach churning. She shut her eyes tight and focused on steadying her breath, trying to shake off the clinging residue of his thoughts.
"Focus on something else," she whispered to herself.
Meow...
The faint mewing sound pulled her attention. Kira opened her eyes and spotted a small cat peering at her from inside a carrier, its round, inquisitive eyes locked onto her.
A wave of relief washed over her as she shifted her focus to the animal. There was a strange comfort in connecting with creatures whose thoughts were simple, untangled by malice or deceit.
One of the unique aspects of Kira's Esper abilities was her connection to animals. Their minds, uncomplicated and instinctive, were far easier to interpret than human thoughts. She could not only understand their emotions but also influence them, soothing their fears or encouraging trust.
[Hello there, little one,] she thought, reaching out with her mind.
The cat's thoughts were a stream of simplicity: it was scared, confused, and longing for its owner. Kira could feel the tension in its tiny body, the uncertainty of its surroundings.
[It's okay,] Kira thought, her mental tone soft and reassuring. [You're safe. Your owner will be back soon.]
The cat's anxiety began to ebb, replaced by a sense of calm. Its eyes softened, and it let out a quieter, more contented meow.
Kira smiled. [That's it. Just relax. You'll be alright.]
As the train slowed into the next station, Kira disconnected her mind from the cat's. She rose from her seat, casting one last glance at the little creature.
[Take care,] she thought.
"Hey, what was that about?" Ethan asked, his curiosity piqued. His sharp gray eyes sparkled with intrigue as he followed her gaze to the cat.
Kira shrugged, her lips curving into a small smile. "Just saying hello to a new friend."
Maxuel, silent as always, observed her with a slight raise of his brow.
They stepped off the train and onto the bustling platform, the crowd a chaotic blur of emotions and noise. Kira's senses hummed with the cacophony, but she drew strength from the familiar presence of her twin brother and Maxuel.
Even so, a part of her remained unsettled, the lingering thoughts of the man on the train a stark reminder of the darker side of human nature.

The late afternoon sky stretched wide, painted in a palette of soft oranges and deep purples. But for Kira, Ethan, and Maxuel, the beauty of the world above was overshadowed by their destination: the hospital.
The glass-and-steel structure loomed over them, its cold, clinical façade a stark contrast to the warmth of the summer evening.
As they approached the entrance, Kira glanced at Maxuel, her Esper abilities attuned to the emotional storm swirling within him.
Fear, anxiety, guilt—it was all there, a tangle of emotions too complex for even him to untangle.
She reached out gently, her voice soft. "Max, he's going to be okay."
Maxuel didn't respond, his eyes fixed ahead, his hands clenching and unclenching.
Inside the hospital lobby, the trio navigated through the bustling crowd. Kira's senses buzzed with the overlapping emotions of patients, doctors, and visitors. Every corner was saturated with anxiety, relief, and sometimes despair.
"Why are you here anyway?" Ethan asked, breaking the silence.
Kira gave him a wry look. "Because Max asked me to come along."
Ethan's brow furrowed in suspicion. "You asked her to come? You two—"
"Don't say it," Kira cut him off, her voice sharp. "And don't think it either."
Ethan scowled, clearly annoyed. "Stop reading my thoughts!"
"Stop thinking about pointless things so much," Kira retorted, a playful smirk on her lips.
Ethan's face reddened with frustration. "I swear, one day I'll become a doctor, crack open that head of yours, and take away your powers."
Kira's laugh was light but cutting. "If you're going through all that trouble, why not make yourself immune to me?"
"I can't operate on myself, genius!"
"That's what other doctors are for, moron."
Their bickering drew the attention of a few people nearby, including Maxuel, who finally intervened. "Enough. This is a hospital. Try to keep your voices down."
Kira turned to Maxuel, her teasing demeanor softening as she caught the full weight of his internal turmoil. His emotions were raw, simmering just beneath the surface.
She reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "It's going to be fine, Max. Daniel's strong—he'll pull through."
Her words hung in the air, meant as much for herself as for Maxuel.

As they waited for news of Daniel, Kira sat in the quiet corridor, her hands folded in her lap. She stared at the sterile white walls, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts.
She couldn't deny it: Daniel's absence had left a void. For all her composure, the worry gnawed at her, and her Esper abilities only amplified it.
She closed her eyes, focusing on her breathing. But even then, the lingering traces of Maxuel's fears and Ethan's restless thoughts pressed against her mental barriers.
"I'll see him soon," she whispered to herself, her voice a quiet promise.
