From Westeros to Essos : The Crusader King

Chapter 35: Chapter 35

It's been a year since he came home, and to his surprise, Andar found just how much he missed being around his family, especially his younger siblings. Though while love spending time with Robar, Waymar and their young sister Ysilla, his return home also meant that he was force by a very stubborn old man to learn how to rule Runestone.

His father… despite wanting only the best for him, had started to bother Andar a great deal with all of the marriage proposals he was getting from various lords of the Vale. And if that was not bad enough, his father somehow over the years, had become good friends with the Warden of The North, Lord Eddard Stark and with that friendship came the friendship of many lords from the North. Luckly there were not a lot of girls around his age in the North as there were here in the Vale, but truth be told he'd rather marry a northern savage as people call them then have to deal with a southern snob of woman.

Most of those proposals, he rejected with no hesitation, especially those nine that he got from Lord Frey. Once those annoying and outright blasphemous proposals were taken care off, what Andar was forced by a very angry Bronze Yohn, were three girls, two from the north and one from the vale.

The ones from the North are, not bad to say the least, after all both the Umbers and Mormonts were known and respected, but with that came the fact that both houses were training their woman for protection, which down south was not seen as something a lady should do. Dacey Mormont was the oldest daughter of the She-bear, and if the rumors are true, she's as wild as her mother was, something that Andar found not so appealing for a southern wife of a lord, even if that lord was only half southern.

As for the other one, Lyarra Umber, she is the eldest daughter of Yorn Umber, brother of the Greatjon. She, from what his father told him, was beautiful even for the south standards, as for her personality, compared to the young she-bear, Lyarra was tamer, and while she does fight alongside her cousins and uncles, she was nowhere as aggressive as Dacey.

And finally, Alys Corbray, a girl that Andar could only pity. She was already in her 23-name day but still unmarried and the reason behind that was her face who had been burned by her father while he was drunk.

Thankfully there was still time for him, otherwise, his only choice would be the Umber girl, who will no doubt tower over him by a head at least.

Just as he finished reviewing another building request, there was a knock on the door and a second later, his younger brother, Robar rushed in scared and yet, excited?

"Brother, you better have a good reason for rushing here without permission. After all I don't need you to remind what father's reaction would be."

His three and ten name days brother shivered for a second before shaking his head. "It's a good reason, I promise. The Lannisters! Their port and fleet are burning! I was with father when he got a raven from the Capital. "

Hearing that from his brother made Andar stop whatever he was doing and reach for a bottle of dornish wine he got a little over four moons ago from a certain nephew of his who had sent yet another shipment from Volantis to the Vale. If the Lannisters lost their fleet, the only ones who could have done it were the bloody Greyjoys and if they did it… a bloody war is to be fought.

Pouring the wine in two glasses, he handed one to his brother, before drinking from his. "It seems, brother that Waymar might remain as the Royce of the House while we are cutting squids down."

"Call the Banners, Jon! I will not stand this madness from the fucking squid!"

By the seven it has been a long and painful day, especially after they learned about Lannisport and their fleet. With the Greyjoys in open rebellion, the banners would be called, without a doubt, the only problem was, just how many of them would answer.

Ned, would come, that much he didn't doubt, same with the Vale. Yohn would lead them, while he remains here in the Capital and rule the kingdom in the king's absence. Tywin will also raise his banners in revenge for what they have done. The Stormlands would raise under Stannis alongside the royal fleet, leaving the Reach and Dorne as variables.

If even one of them chooses to remain neutral and not raise their banners now, then the crown would be force to take action and actually reroute troops to defend the Capital and the royal family.

Then there was his own stupid son, who could become a problem for them. They boy had been betrothed to a merchant daughter, out of all the noble ladies in Westeros and with that betrothed crumble any chance of strengthening Robert's rule by marrying him to someone from Dorne or the Reach. Thankfully, over the past year, drastic changes had been happening to Volantis, changes that not even Varys could learn about as no one, other than the tiger cloaks and the brothers of the cross could leave the city.

Jon didn't liked what his son was doing over there, while he should be here under his and Yohn's care learning how to become a better servant for the throne and not waste his life in Essos fighting against pirates and slavers like some common sellsword.

"Fucking squid dares to proclaim himself King of the fucking rocks! Who does he think he is!"

Robert started cursing again, throwing his, by now, empty wine bottle in the wall.

"Your grace, I already asked the Grand Maester to prepare the letters. Most of the realm will gather in Lannisport and wait for your brother, Lord Stannis before attacking the Iron Islands. We will make them pay, your grace, I have no doubt about that."

The city looked better than ever once his men and the now free men and women of the tiger cloaks had started clearing all of the slavery shops and merchants from within the city, of course, as discretely as one could do.

It only took an entire year for over seven thousand people to lose their lives thanks to their greed and their involvement in that barbaric practice and with them, came an end to the other two triarch's rule.

Neither Doniphos Paenymion and Nyessos Vhassar loved what was happening in their city, but alas, what could two people with little to no power do against their rival who own the largest army in the city. They tried, Gods they did, and they lost almost all of their loyal followers clashing with the tiger cloaks and those fanatics that call themselves Christians, a religion who had started to took over the faith of R'hllor over a year ago. Thousands had died because of them and yet the two idiots still didn't knew how accept defeat.

Even now, they plot how to kill Maegyr in the most inhumane way possible, and yet they have no gold left, no supporters other than a few slaves they keep in their houses and mayhaps a sellsword or two.

Letting out a sigh, Konrad got up from his bed. It been a year since Baelish died and he met his betrothed, and to be honest, these two were good things for him. Talisa had started to grow on him, as a friend for now, which was great for both children.

Not to mention that with each day he spend with his betrothed helping her down at the hospital, the people of Volantis had started to learn that he was the reason their families were able to be treated without having to sell their lives away.

As for the Baelish business, the man was a snake, one that thought himself smart when in fact he was pretty dumb, after all what kind of man keeps a copy of all of his holdings in all of his holdings?

Taking a deep breath, Konrad went to his window and open it letting the cold air of the morning enter in his room. There were too many things that he had to deal, not only as the leader and logistical mastermind behind the brothers of the cross, but with the changes that took place in Volantis only increased the amount of time he had to spend behind a desk learning how to be a good leader from his future goodfather, while spending his free time joggling between training with Tyrek, Gendel and occasionally Nyssa.

As soon as he was dressed there was a knock on the door and to his surprise, Konrad saw Tyrek walking in the room alone, which was unusual to say the least, as most of the times he was being flanked by at least two knights and ten initiates.

"Uncle Tyrek, it's good to see you so early."

"My lord. I fear that my early visit isn't a pleasant one."

If someone were to ask him how will he feel in the morning, not even in a million years would have Konrad answered concern as he saw the serious expression on his uncle's face. He motioned for him to sit down and poured him a cup of wine. "What is it, uncle? What has happened?"

Tyrek took a sip of the wine and cleared his throat. "One of our scouts intercepted one of the spider's little birds outside the city. It was carrying a letter addressed to Illyrio Mopatis, some magister from Pentos."

Konrad frowned. Now why would Varys have a letter for someone in Pentos all the way here in Volantis? Unless he wanted for someone to get their hands on that letter, which would make more sense than a honest mistake. "What did the letter say?"

"Balon Greyjoy crowned himself king of the iron island and soon after that came an attack on Lannisport which resulted in the town and the fleet of the Lannisters being burned."

How could someone be so foolish to crown himself king and the directly declare war against six united kingdoms with a king who loves war? Balo Greyjoy was either the biggest fool alive or by some miracle from God, the man actually has some plan to make the kingdoms fight against each other otherwise, the Iron Island would not be "independent" for long.

"Uncle Tyrek, do you think we should do something?" Konrad asked, being quite curious to hear what Tyrek was going to say about this.

The man in question thought, stood silent for a minute or two before letting out a sigh. "To tell you the truth, my young lord, I have no idea. We could help and I'm sure no one would refuse free swords and veterans, but we have only ten ships, that would do nothing against the Iron Fleet or whatever name they might have now."

"What about Volantis fleet? Their fleet is bigger than anything the Seven Kingdoms have."

"You and the fat triarch would be family one day, but I can't see the him agreeing to help us when he is in need of all of the men and women, he could get for conquering the city. Thought that doesn't men he would not agree to send a couple more ships with us which would at least let us do some damage if needs be."(A/N: Not yet at full health, but I'm getting there. Will continue the chapter on the morrow with how Konrad reacts to the rebellion )
