Chapter 13: chapter 12 (2.2k word)
The door creaked open, and Kaeya and Diluc stepped into the office. The tension in the room was palpable.
Jean sat at her desk, deep in thought, her fingers lightly tapping on the armrest of her chair. Behind her stood Lisa, who noticed their arrival immediately.
"Jean, they've both arrived."
Jean snapped out of her reverie, her gaze shifting to the two men.
"Thank you for coming."
Diluc nodded curtly.
"What's the issue that requires my involvement?"
Kaeya, on the other hand, strolled casually toward the window, his hands behind his back as he glanced outside.
Jean took a deep breath, her expression serious.
"There's been an incident in Dragonspine."
Kaeya's relaxed demeanor shifted as he turned to face her, his one visible eye sharp with interest.
"Dragonspine? What's happened there?"
Diluc crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at the mention of the icy mountain.
"Did the Fatui stir up trouble again?"
Jean shook her head firmly. Before she could provide an explanation, the door behind them opened again. Albedo entered.
"It's not the Fatui. It's the Abyss Order."
Kaeya's brow furrowed at the revelation.
"The Abyss Order? What exactly have they done there?"
Diluc's expression darkened at the mention of the Abyss. He stood silently.
Albedo stood with his arms crossed, his calm tone contrasting with the seriousness of his words.
"When I was near the foot of Dragonspine, conducting some alchemical research, I sensed something unusual—a clash of energies within the mountain. One of those energies was undoubtedly Abyssal in nature. The other... unfamiliar, but potent."
His gaze shifted slightly, as if recalling the moment.
"The blizzard was too intense for me to approach safely, so I couldn't confirm what—or who—the Abyss Order was fighting. But I am certain they are active there."
Lisa nodded thoughtfully before turning to address the others.
"Thank you for your report, Albedo." She turned to Kaeya and Diluc. "As you've just heard, there's something significant happening in Dragonspine, and we need to investigate. However, most of our knights lack the necessary experience—or the protection of a Vision—to handle a situation involving the Abyss Order."
Jean, sitting upright, folded her hands on the desk.
"When Albedo informed me earlier, I considered assigning Amber to investigate. But given the circumstances, it's far too dangerous. The Abyss Order is unpredictable, and we don't know what we're dealing with."
Diluc's crimson eyes stayed fixed on Jean as she spoke. His expression was thoughtful.
"So, you want me to investigate instead?"
Jean nodded.
"Yes. You have the most experience dealing with the Abyss Order, and your skills are crucial for something like this. I wouldn't ask unless it was absolutely necessary."
Diluc fell silent, clearly deep in thought. The weight of the request hung in the air as everyone waited for his response.
Diluc crossed his arms, his expression resolute.
"Even without your request, Jean, I would have dealt with the Abyss Order. Knowing those pests are operating near Mondstadt is enough reason."
Jean smiled faintly, relief washing over her.
"Thank you, Diluc. Your help is greatly appreciated."
Diluc nodded curtly, his attention shifting to Kaeya, who grinned slyly and pointed at himself.
"What about me, Master Jean? Am I tagging along with dear Diluc on this little adventure?"
Jean nodded, her tone serious.
"Yes. I need you to work together."
Kaeya giving a casual thumbs-up.
"Understood. Anything for the good of Mondstadt."
Diluc sighed, already anticipating Kaeya's antics.
"Try not to get in my way, Kaeya."
Kaeya smirked but said nothing, clearly enjoying his brother's irritation.
Albedo, who had been quietly observing, stepped forward.
"I will accompany you as well. The unknown energy I sensed warrants further investigation."
Jean nodded, looking at the three of them.
"Thank you, all of you. Please proceed with caution. We cannot afford any unnecessary risks."
-------------
Outside Angel's Share, Luna walked alongside Eula and Amber, her steps light and casual.
"Almost all of Mondstadt is already full of Dad's face. I think it's enough, right?"
Eula crossed her arms, her tone blunt as usual.
"You think it's enough? It's more than enough. You practically turned the city into a shrine for him."
Luna rubbed the back of her head sheepishly, a small laugh escaping her.
"Hehehe, maybe I got carried away."
She looked up at the bright sun above, squinting at its brilliance.
"So, what are you guys planning to do? We've still got time before the sun goes down."
Her gaze lingered on the sky.
"Ugh, my eyes feel like they're burning."
Amber, walking beside her, quickly covered Luna's eyes with her hand, gently steering her away from looking directly at the sun.
"Dame Luna, you can't just stare at the sun with your naked eyes like that. You'll damage your vision!"
Luna pouted under Amber's hand.
"But it's so shiny... How could I not look?"
Eula sighed, shaking her head.
"Sometimes, I wonder how you manage to survive day-to-day."
Luna grinned mischievously, poking her tongue out playfully.
"With the power of friendship, of course!"
Amber "Then how about we head to the Adventurer's Guild? Maybe there's a task we can do."
Luna's face lit up with excitement.
"Yeah! Let's do something fun!"
Eula nodded silently, her usual stoic self. Together, the three of them made their way toward the Adventurer's Guild near Mondstadt's main gate.
As they arrived, Luna immediately spotted Katheryne standing behind the counter, ever-present with her professional demeanor.
"Hello, Katheryne!"
She waved enthusiastically, drawing the receptionist's attention.
"Ad Astra Abyssosque. Hello, Luna."
While Luna chatted with Katheryne, Amber and Eula walked over to the billboard nearby. They scanned it for any available tasks, the vibrant notices fluttering slightly in the gentle breeze.
"Hmm, there's a couple of requests here. Some monster subjugations and a few delivery tasks."
Eula crossed her arms, studying the board.
"I'd prefer something that doesn't involve running errands."
Amber laughed lightly.
"Well, let's see if anything interesting pops up before we decide."
Luna suddenly popped up between Amber and Eula, pointing excitedly at one of the tasks on the board.
"How about this?"
She pointed at a notice for a monster subjugation request.
Task:
Eliminate Hilichurl camp near Dadaupa Gorge. Reward: 100 Mora per Hilichurl killed, 100,000 Mora for destroying the camp.
"The reward is super generous too!"
Amber leaned closer to read the details.
"Hmm, that's quite the payout! But I wonder if there's something unusual about them."
Eula raised a brow.
"It's not often someone offers this much for such a simple task. There could be something."
Luna grinned confidently, flexing her arms.
"It means more fun, right? Let's go for it!"
Amber laughed at Luna's enthusiasm.
"Alright, I don't see why not. We'll keep an eye out, just in case."
Eula sighed but nodded.
"Fine. If it's too much for you two, I'll handle it myself."
Luna playfully nudged Eula.
"Don't act so tough. We'll be fine!"
They turned to Katheryne to officially accept the task.
---------------
Arriving at Dadaupa Gorge, Luna slowed her pace and dramatically dove into a nearby bush. She crawled to a tree, pressed her back against it, and peeked around as if scouting the area. Holding the gun, she whispered into her hand like she had a communication device.
"Eula, Amber, the line is clear. Over."
She then performed an exaggerated roll, mimicking a character from a certain game, her movements drawing attention to herself rather than hiding.
Amber and Eula stood a few paces behind, watching the spectacle.
Amber sweatdropping "Luna… we're not even close to the camp yet. And why are you acting like this?"
Eula, arms crossed, smile in amusement but remained silent, enjoying the show.
Luna tilted her head innocently, looking at Amber.
"Dad told me a story about agents—what was it? Men in Black, or something like that. They hunt aliens! It was so cool! They wore suits and had super-secret gadgets!"
Amber sighed, realizing Luna had been entirely swept up in her father's tales again.
"Luna, we're not dealing with aliens; we're dealing with Hilichurls. Focus!"
Eula chuckling softly "Let her have her fun. At least she's creative."
Luna pouted, puffing out her cheeks.
"You guys don't get it! Stealth is key to missions like this! I'll show you."
She crouched down low, ready to "sneak" ahead dramatically, while Amber facepalmed.
A few minutes later, Luna grew visibly impatient. She hopped in place, her energy bubbling over.
"I can't wait anymore! I wanna use the gun Dad gave me!"
Without warning, she grabbed Amber and Eula's wrists and started pulling them along at a brisk pace.
"The faster we get to that camp, the faster we finish the quest! Let's go, let's go!"
Amber stumbling slightly "Alright, alright! Slow down!"
Eula simply nodded, letting herself be dragged while maintaining her composure.
When the trio arrived, they crouched behind a rock, surveying the camp. In the middle of a shallow pond, a Ruin Guard sat motionless, surrounded by Hilichurls.
Amber: narrowing her eyes "No wonder the reward is so generous. There's a Ruin Guard here."
She readied her bow, her fingers brushing the string as she took aim.
Eula glanced at the camp and then at the Ruin Guard, gripping her greatsword firmly.
"Luna, from here on, be more serious. We're not just dealing with just Hilichurls—we have to fight a Ruin Guard too."
Luna grinned confidently, stepping out from behind the rock.
"I know, I know! Don't worry—I'll show you how we Kaslanas fight! With a gun!"
Eula raised an eyebrow, glancing at Amber, who could only shrug with a bemused smile.
Luna positioned herself dramatically, pointing her gun toward the camp.
"Let's do this!"
With that, Amber released her arrow, striking the Hilichurl perched atop the wooden tower. The creature toppled over with a loud crash.
The other Hilichurls immediately raised their voices in alarm.
"YaaA!!"
Their cries echoed through the camp, rallying their comrades.
Eula wasted no time, dashing toward an Abyss Mage near the edge of the camp. With a powerful swing, her greatsword crashed down, the Abyss Mage before it could summon the shield.
Meanwhile, the Ruin Guard stirred. Its massive body began to rise from the pond, water cascading off its frame as it activated.
Amber stayed focused, picking off Hilichurls one by one with her arrows.
"Gotcha… and you're next—"
Suddenly, Eula darted back to Amber's side, deflecting incoming arrows from the Hilichurls with her greatsword.
"Stay focused, Amber. Watch your back."
"Thanks, Eula!"
As the two coordinated their efforts, a thought struck Eula. She quickly scanned the surrounding.
"Wait… where's Luna?!"
Amber blinked, momentarily distracted.
"Eh? I thought she rushed in with you!"
Eula frowned, her eyes narrowing in realization.
"Oh no… don't tell me—"
Both Eula and Amber turned their heads toward the Ruin Guard, which now loomed over the camp, its red core beginning to glow.
"She wouldn't—"
"She would."
And sure enough, a familiar voice could be heard from the direction of the Ruin Guard.
Luna yelling "Come on, big guy! Let's see how tough you really are!"
Eula and Amber groaned in unison, already rushing toward Luna's location.
------------
Luna charged toward the Ruin Guard, her movements bold and reckless.
The massive automaton raised its arm high, its shadow looming over her. With a deafening crash, it brought its arm down, aiming to crush her.
At that moment, the scene shifted—
Lucien dodged a Ruin Grader's colossal hand with precise agility.
Back to Luna—she darted between the Ruin Guard's legs, skillfully evading its stomps.
With quick reflexes, Luna aimed her gun at the exposed joint in the Ruin Guard's leg and fired. Sparks flew as her bullets connected, causing the massive machine to falter and drop to one knee.
Again, the scene blurred—
Lucien, standing atop the Ruin Grader, drove his greatsword deep into its core.
Back to Luna—now atop the Ruin Guard's head, she steadied her gun, aiming directly at the glowing core embedded in its metallic skull.
Both voices echoed in unison across time and space
"Release!!"
The vision returned to normal— The Ruin Guard collapsed in a heap of smoking metal.
Luna stood atop the defeated Ruin Guard, wiping sweat from her brow.
"That was really fun!!"
She waved energetically toward Amber and Eula, who were running toward her in a mix of relief and exasperation.
"Luna, get down here right now!"
Luna, still a bit confused but sensing Amber's frustration, hopped off the Ruin Guard's body and landed near her companions.
"Do you even realize how reckless you were just now?! Charging in alone like that?! What were you thinking?!"
Amber's voice carried both worry and irritation as she stood with her hands on her hips, her bow slung across her back.
Luna averted her gaze, her usual enthusiasm subdued under Amber's stern tone. She glanced over at Eula, hoping for some kind of rescue.
Eula met Luna's pleading eyes for a moment, then casually looked away, crossing her arms. The message was clear: "You're on your own for this one."
Luna sighed inwardly, resigning herself to the inevitable.
Amber's lecture went on for what felt like hours to Luna, her tone alternating between scolding and explaining the dangers of reckless behavior.
"I should've known better… but it was fun…" she thought to herself, sneaking the occasional glance at the dismantled Ruin Guard with a small smile.
(A/n: it hard for me to write and describe the surroundings.... hmmmm I gonna read more collapse fic and yuanshen fic )
