Happry Potter: The New Player

Chapter 40: Fear and Suspicion

No one cared about the dueling club. Evan, Ron, and Hermione led Harry out of the Great Hall, followed by Colin and Ginny.

People quickly stepped aside as if they feared Harry might attack them.

Harry looked somewhat puzzled, unsure of what was happening. No one explained anything to him as they dragged him into the empty Gryffindor common room.

Then Ron pushed Harry onto a couch and said, "You're a Parselmouth, why didn't you tell us?"

"A what?" Harry asked.

"Parselmouth, it means you can speak to snakes!"

"I know, it's the second time I've done it," said Harry. "I did it once in a zoo when I accidentally let out a large snake and my cousin Dudley... it's a long story, but I bet many people can do it."

"They can't," Ron frowned, "It's not common, Harry."

"Yes, it's bad!" Ginny said, seated next to Evan.

"What's so bad about it?" Harry asked, "What's wrong with everyone? Look, if I hadn't told the snake not to attack Justin then..."

"So you did say that," Ron interrupted.

"Ron, what do you mean, you were there, just like Evan, Hermione, Colin, and Ginny, they all were there, they heard me."

"I only heard a hiss," Colin mumbled, "I don't know what you said."

"That's Parseltongue, Colin, it's the language of snakes," Ron explained.

"Are you saying I used snake language?" Harry said, eyes wide.

"Yes, none of us understood you. You could have said anything. No wonder Justin was so terrified, and hearing you sounded like you were encouraging the snake."

"Exactly!" Colin and Ginny nodded.

Harry looked at them and said, "But I didn't know I could speak another language."

Ron shook his head.

Colin and Ginny's faces reflected horror, while Hermione sat to the side and pulled out a book, reading quickly, as Evan immersed himself in his thoughts, Harry wondered what he was thinking.

"Are you going to tell me it's wrong to stop a snake from killing Justin?" Harry suddenly shouted, "Justin didn't join the ghosts, so it doesn't matter how I did it."

"Brilliant!" Hermione finally spoke, turned to a particular page in the book and showed it to Harry, "Look here. It says Slytherin could also speak to snakes; he was the first known Parselmouth, that's why the Slytherin house symbol is a snake."

Harry's mouth dropped open in surprise as he looked at the book in front of him.

"Exactly, Harry, so now the whole school will think you're the heir, especially now that the chamber has been opened."

"But I'm not, I didn't open the chamber!" Harry said in a panicked tone.

"We believe you, Harry," Ginny said softly.

"We all believe you, but it will be hard to prove to others," Hermione said calmly, "Slytherin lived over a thousand years ago, so you could be the heir."

"That's absurd, so that's why everyone was avoiding me?" Harry said.

Harry stood up and looked at Evan, who had yet to speak, and said, "Evan, you don't believe I'm the heir of Slytherin or that I opened the Chamber of Secrets, right?"

"Of course not, I'm not surprised you're a Parselmouth," Evan said.

"Relax, Harry," Evan said, "Although being a Parselmouth is very rare, it's not unique; many wizards can do it besides the heirs of Slytherin. I can name a few if you'd like."

Harry felt relieved by Evan's words, although Evan didn't mention that wizards who were Parselmouths were all invariably evil.

"That doesn't really matter, but what I want to know is what spell Ron used," Evan said, turning his gaze towards Ron, who was beside him.

Ron turned red. "It was just a Disarming Charm, maybe my wand caused it to change."

"Come on, Ron!" Evan said impatiently, "That's exactly what I told Snape so he wouldn't ask any more questions. If a broken wand can turn a Disarming Charm into such dark magic, then dark wizards would be out there with broken wands."

"What did you say?" Hermione exclaimed, "Dark magic?"

"Yes, the spell was definitely dark magic. That's why Snape asked Ron if he had been in the restricted book section."

"But I didn't..." Ron said, alarmed.

"Who knows!" Evan said as he stared at Ron, "Maybe it wasn't you."

"I didn't do it," Ron repeated. Then, Ron stood up, angry and confused, "What do you mean, Evan? Do you think I'm someone else who used Polyjuice Potion to become Ron?"

Ron let out a harsh laugh, Colin and Ginny were slightly frightened, and Harry and Hermione looked bewildered, unsure of what Evan really meant.

"I think he really is Ron," Hermione hesitated, "Evan, you're probably too stressed by current events."

"Yeah, this joke isn't funny," Harry said, shaking his head, "Today must be April Fools' Day because I saved Justin and now I'm considered the Heir of Slytherin, and now Ron suddenly turns into a dark wizard."

"However, for dark wizards, controlling someone's mind is a simple task."

"What the hell do you mean?!" Ron exclaimed loudly.

"Where were you on Halloween and when the first attack happened?" Evan asked coldly.

"I was apologizing to Moaning Myrtle in the cursed bathroom!"

"One," Evan said, "Where were you when the second attack happened?"

"In the hospital wing with Percy because your spell made my brother's arm bones disappear."

"No, you weren't there!"

Evan shook his head and said, "Shortly after leaving the hospital wing, you left, and no one knew where you went."

"What does that have to do with my absence?" Ron looked somewhat hysterical, "If students are attacked and no one is with you when it happens, then every student is a suspect because they could be the Heir of Slytherin."

"Only you can use a broken wand to leave a corpse," Evan said, narrowing his eyes, "Isn't that right?"
