Chapter 408: Chapter 408: Cavalry Charge
Garona's words left Alaric somewhat puzzled.
"You say they are here for you. How is that possible?"
"That banner," Garona pointed to the distant red-and-black battle flag, "is the mark of the Ravagers.
Among all the scouts sent out, only I belong to the Ravagers. These wolf cavalry have come to find me."
Alaric translated this for those around him.
As soon as the words were spoken, everyone fell silent.
This news was indeed startling and required some time for digestion.
After a while, Alaric finally asked Garona, "So, what are your thoughts? Do you want to go back with them?"
In response to Alaric's question, Garona gave him a broad smile.
"I told you, I won't run away." She said earnestly, "We are friends."
"Yes, we are friends." Alaric nodded with a smile, now finally able to confirm that Garona had completely abandoned her remaining loyalty to the orc tribe and had sided with him.
Although doubts and concerns about the future lingered beneath her resolute demeanor, Alaric believed that time would gradually diminish all of this and allow her to truly stand by his side.
And now, this was the first step in establishing trust between Garona and him.
He turned to Glamon and said, "The wolf cavalry's here to take Garona away, but I've decided to keep her. However, that means you'll be implicated as well. What do you say?"
"We of the Stormwind Kingdom will never compromise with invaders!" Glamon laughed heartily, then shouted loudly, "Everyone, take your positions and prepare to engage the enemy!"
Ahead, the soldiers responded with a unified roar.
The human infantry formed a rectangular formation, with a row of larger-than-average tower shields at the front.
The silver tower shields lined up neatly to create a wall of steel. In the night, the smooth surfaces of the shields reflected the flames of the torches, glowing brilliantly.
Behind the shields, soldiers peeked through the gaps in their helmets, revealing determined eyes—those eyes were fearless and willing to face death.
Although the human soldiers had learned from past lessons, opting to use two-handed shields instead of one to counter the orcs' overwhelming strength, the shield bearers at the front of the formation were still destined to suffer the greatest casualties.
However, no one wavered, for when they understood their responsibilities, they had already disregarded their lives.
They knew their task was to protect their comrades behind them with steel and blood, to safeguard the thousands of citizens of Stormwind Kingdom.
Behind the shield bearers were two rows of sword and shield soldiers, who, like standard infantry, held a sword in one hand and a shield in the other, serving as a supplement to the defense.
Further back were the spear-wielders, with spears measuring five or six feet long.
The first row held their spears horizontally through the gaps between the sword and shield soldiers and the shield bearers, extending to the front of the formation, while the second and third rows held their spears diagonally, and the rear rows stood them upright.
This forest of spears was crucial to the entire formation, as their presence made the infantry a true nemesis to cavalry charges, turning this deadly thicket into a place of true death for the enemy.
Most of the ordinary infantry were lined up behind the spearmen, forming the backbone of the battlefield.
Once both sides made contact and the enemy was thrown into disarray, they would be ready to shine.
As the human infantry stood ready, the wooden barricade ahead finally let out a grating "squeak," followed by a loud crash as it collapsed.
The wolf cavalry had finally torn down the barricade, and now they would face an unprotected camp, ready to unleash a massacre.
—At least, that's what they thought.
After all, who would have expected them to bypass so many sentries and strategic points in Elwynn Forest to launch an attack deep into the Stormwind Kingdom's heart in such an ordinary valley?
However, when they dismantled the valley's outer barricades, they discovered that the human soldiers had long been waiting behind them.
Their long journey, their stealth along the way, and their sudden assault were all in vain.
"How did these humans find us?" The orc cavalry captain was completely baffled, but the bloodthirsty warrior didn't need to understand that.
"If we can't launch a sneak attack, then we'll attack head-on."
That was the simple and brutal thought of the orc captain.
If it had been a human army, upon seeing this well-trained steel formation, they would likely hesitate, as simple arrows and cavalry would be nearly ineffective against this steel defense.
What would follow would probably be a protracted battle.
However, the orc mindset was completely different.
So, riding the tallest wolf, he sounded the charge.
The wolf beneath him echoed with a long howl.
In the next moment, the orc wolf cavalry charged at the human formation.
They sneered, shouted, and waved their immensely heavy weapons, riding fiercely on their wolves, fearlessly attacking.
On the watchtower, archers aimed at each wolf rider, shooting arrows representing death.
However, the orcs were too strong; their muscles allowed them to simply shrug off the arrows fired by the human archers.
Many wolf riders were struck by several arrows, yet they continued their bloodthirsty howls, charging forward without changing expression.
Only occasionally did a few wolf riders fall from their mounts after being hit in vital spots.
Perhaps only the elven rangers could deliver a fatal shot against these muscle-bound brutes.
This scene made Baron Glamon frown in the rear.
It seemed that these archers could not be relied upon for ranged attacks.
He then looked at Alaric, praying that this powerful mage would truly be strong enough to help his army achieve victory.
Of course, while the human archers were launching their attacks, the orcs weren't idle.
Compared to the orderly humans, the orc warriors were much more chaotic, to the extent that they barely had standardized weapons; everyone used whatever weapon they could grab.
So, it was now visible that many orc wolf riders pulled hand axes, short spears, and double-headed flails from their bodies and hurled them toward the humans.
Most of the thrown weapons struck the tower shields with a "thud," creating sounds that made the shield bearers tremble, but they caused no real damage.
Only a few lucky ones managed to breach the tower shield's defenses, inflicting casualties and causing an outburst of curses among the humans.
Overall, this exchange of ranged attacks could only be considered child's play.
Within seconds, the orc cavalry had arrived before the human formation.
Both sides were about to collide.
