Chapter 13: Legal Maneuvers
A smart-looking gentleman dressed in a business suit entered the lobby and approached Shuri and David.
"I have the right to arrest whoever I want! Who are you to interfere with the police authority?" David retorted, glaring angrily at the gentleman.
"I'm Ethan Hughes, a lawyer from KE Law Firm representing Karlene Lee." Ethan disregarded David's question and handed him his business card.
David took the name card and his whole being froze. "KE Law Firm?!"
KE Law Firm held the highest prestige in the city, and David had heard of Ethan. He was a renowned lawyer both domestically and internationally, a terrifying figure in the legal world, undefeated in court to this day. David hadn't anticipated Ethan would be assigned as Karlene's lawyer.
Sophia had told David earlier that no lawyer would represent Karlene, implying he could handle the Lee sisters as he pleased. So, how did they not only manage to hire a lawyer but such a forbidden one at that?
"Back to your question, Officer," Ethan continued with a faint smile. "If you wished to arrest this lady, it must be made within the confines of the law, based on valid grounds and evidence. Any action taken outside of these parameters risks infringing upon individuals' rights and could lead to legal consequences."
David swallowed nervously, not daring to retort. He knew it wouldn't be wise to argue with one of the top lawyers of the country.
Shuri was at a loss, not understanding what was happening. Like David, she had no clue why or how Ethan even became Karlene's attorney. Sensing that Ethan wasn't someone with malicious intent, she didn't want to pry into him for answers. Instead, she asked, "Mr. Hughes, are you really here to represent my sister?"
Ethan turned to Shuri and smiled. "Yes, Roy has assigned me to assist your sister."
Roy?
Was he referring to Roy Lloyd?
Shuri recalled that Roy had been Noran's closest friend and was one of their regulars when they first opened their café in New Valley twelve years ago.
Did Roy help Karlene because of Noran?
Shuri had numerous questions, but she felt it wasn't the right moment to ask Ethan. Right now, the priority was getting Karlene out of trouble.
"Thank you, Mr. Hughes. I'll entrust Karlene to you then," Shuri stated sincerely.
After assuring Shuri, Ethan requested David to pass him all the relevant documents, including statements and surveillance footage. David obediently obliged and led Ethan to the interrogation room.
Shuri sighed in relief and immediately tried calling Noran to share with him the good news. However, his phone appeared to be engaged at the moment. Thinking he might be occupied, she sent him a message.
"Everything is fine here. Mr. Lloyd has engaged a lawyer for Karlene, and I'm doing well too, so no more apologizing, or I'll get upset [angry emoji]. None of this is your fault. You don't have to feel sorry or rush back, alright? I miss you but I don't want this to affect your work."
Shuri hit send, her finger pausing for a moment before she typed another message, saying, "I'll heading over to Fushin tomorrow, and I'll be back in a few days."
She had a lot she wanted to tell him but thought it was better to save it for later. Not long after she sent that message, Ethan returned to the lobby with Karlene by his side.
"Shuri!" Karlene ran over to Shuri, who immediately stood up with a bright smile on her face.
"Lene! I'm so glad you're alright!" Shuri exclaimed as she hugged her sister.
"It's all thanks to Mr. Hughes." Karlene released Shuri and pointed at Ethan. "He's freaking incredible. Once he opened his mouth, everyone in the interrogation room immediately shut up. You should have been in there to see the dumbfounded expressions on those idiots' faces!"
Ethan chuckled softly while Shuri hissed at Karlene's behavior. "Shh, Lene! We are still at the police station. Please mind your manners."
Shuri immediately turned to Ethan, not forgetting to thank him for his help.
"I'm just doing my job," Ethan replied with a faint smile, glancing at Karlene. "Besides, it's my pleasure to have such an interesting client like Miss Lee. That flying kick you delivered to fend off those reporters earlier was quite incredible too."
"Ha! You've got great taste, Mr. Hughes!" Karlene replied, openly patting Ethan on his back.
"Oh my god, Lene!" Shuri exclaimed and wanted to pull Karlene away from Ethan to refrain her from appearing rude.
Fortunately, Ethan didn't seem to mind. "You can just call me Ethan."
"And you can just call me, Karlene," Karlene replied, looking back at Ethan with a big smile.
Before Ethan could respond, a voice sounding rather annoyed interrupted him. "I don't recall you being so friendly with your client, Ethan."
The three of them turned to look at the tall, elite figure who had stepped into the lobby, and Karlene could feel her face heating up upon realizing who that was.
Roy stopped walking when he noticed Karlene staring at him in disbelief. Then, she began to move, walking towards him with haste.
"So, she hasn't forgotten about me?" Roy thought, unable to suppress a smile as he opened his arms to receive her. "Karlene…"
"You fucking coward!"
Instead of giving Roy a hug, Karlene threw a punch right on his handsome face.
