Chapter 29: Escape?
It was almost night, the barracks were dark, and people had started sleeping. Nobu noticed Aung and Min approaching him, their eyes showing radical intent. Nobu, half-sitting, was calmly rubbing his calloused hands because of the chains. Aung obviously didn't know English, so she spoke in Burmese, while Min translated into broken English especially for Nobu. The entire barracks of ten people were staring at them, everyone had their own thoughts, but everyone agreed with them. They needed to get out of here and they needed to know the boy's quirk. Would he tell us voluntarily or by force.
"You must tell us what your ability is. It's not up for discussion." Min concluded.
"Why do you need to know this?" Nobu's voice was heard for the first time. Logically, one could understand that they were gathering abilities here for only one purpose - to escape.
"You haven't figured it out yet?" he began to whisper. -We are going to escape, and you must help us with this, if the quirk is useful, whether you want it or not. It will be better for you. - Nobu thought about it and considered it logical to join the group, at least there will be more than one goal if Nobu worked on his own. "So at least the blame for the escape in case of our failure will not lie on me alone, but on everyone."
-Do you have a plan?
"They are in the position of asking and pleading for my quirk, so we can afford to be a little impudent before giving them information."
Min translated Aung.
"It is written in oil that she occupies a dominant position in this barracks and enjoyed authority and apparently had some unique quirk." Nobu did not know that she had only been here for two weeks, but because of the quirk and Min's henchman, she immediately took a dominant position in this barracks. - "I wonder if the names in Myanmar are so similar to Chinese ones. Especially Min."
"First the quirk." Nobu considered the alternative of not telling, then they could cause harm, but he could call the guards. "Nothing bad will happen if I show one quirk. At least they won't become my enemy, and if they don't like me, they will think of me as weak and underestimate me. Ha... I have a better plan. We can quickly provoke them to escape, play along with them." Nobu grinned maliciously to himself. The Snake Aspect makes itself felt.
"Easier to show." Nobu stood up at ease, and activated Adhesion, then confidently walked up the wall. To the surprise of those around him, he stood on the wall as if on the floor. "T-that's difficult, though. I'm afraid I won't be able to stand like this for long." As soon as the bolt of the sturdy wooden doors was pulled back, Nobu lost his concentration, and everyone scattered to their places.
- Now be quiet! - A guard with a cracked Kalashnikov butt looked in. When he was sure that everything was in order, he left and put the bolt back in.
- Ouch. - Nobu was heard in the gloomy silence. Some remembered how he fell and quietly chuckled.
- The Anandaman Cartel keeps a lot of homeless people here, they specially catch the disadvantaged and weak, but it is better to be homeless than to writhe for them. Our plan is to collect the necessary quirks for a silent escape. We will free other barracks when we get out of here and then seize the weapons warehouse. We will try to hold the defense and it will be easier to escape. Unfortunately, your ability will not help in any way. We need combat power.
- "They need strength, okay."
- Okay, what quirks do you have? - Min listed all the abilities.
- Flexibility - the overgrown guy pointed at himself and briskly twisted his joints at unusual angles. Aung remained silent, walked up to the door and knocked on it, the bolt opened. "What is she doing!?" She activated the quirk on the guard.
-What.... - his eyes gave off a purple tint, Nobu noticed this and understood, the quirk requires eye contact. The guard entered the barracks, lay down on the floor and put down his weapon. - "Control people. Without direct eye contact, without touching... what a monstrous ability."
- She can only do this once on a person, it's good that the guards change. - Min took the weapon from him and knocked him out with the butt. Aung has a hard time, she can only control people for a couple of minutes and only once. - "Still, such strong quirks are not without their weaknesses."
- Wait, are you already planning to run away? - this took Nobu by surprise.
- Yes, we need to act now, right after the shift. The guards get tired too. We'll clear the barracks, there will be new abilities there. You can come with us, it's up to you. - The other guys from the barracks came out of it, they moved on their haunches without making a sound, leaving the only Nobu sitting in a dark corner. The open door forced fresh air to ventilate the room. It was nice.
- "It seems like this is my chance, but for some reason I have a bad feeling." Several guards were already lying in the mud without weapons, killed by homemade bamboo shivs. "Shooting will start soon, sooner or later they will be noticed. Should we not miss the chance to escape or should we free other barracks?" Running and carefully examining the area, Nobu thought: "It's good that they chose to do this late at night, but we don't know the enemy well, there is a chance of losing." The first shots rang out. The entire camp woke up, and the militants went out to hunt. Nobu saw one skinny guy, and then ran up and immobilized him with Frost Breath.
Nobu took the AK-47 and the knife that was sticking out of the table on which some card game was being played. "Not fatal. I wish this ability was forever."
"I don't think we'll be able to escape. There are too few of us, even taking into account all the barracks, and they have firearms, cars and unknown quirks." Nobu felt something flying at him with his heightened perception. He dodged and a fireball flew past, which hit the tent and burned it. It was one of the cartel soldiers, who had a fireball appearing right from his mouth and flying right at the target.
Antipode, Frost Breath against Fire Breath. Nobu released a huge tuber of Antarctic frost from his mouth, absorbing the enemy's attack, the fire lost its shape and the two elements met in a single impulse, sweeping away the nearby tents. Frost won and easily extinguished the fire, but the cartel soldier did not give up and decided to fire a burst of machine gun fire. Nobu ran behind the trees. "Fuck him."
On the way, Nobu slipped and fell, which the soldier saw, but he was shocked by Nobu's height. "What the hell? Is that a child? " - He was surprised by the movements of this white-haired boy, they were chaotic, but gentle, sometimes quite clumsy because of his childish height. Nobu hid behind the trees, and realized - one burst, several hits and he would at least be immobilized or slowed down, and in that case it was a guaranteed death. "The best outcome would be to return to the barracks. I'm already tired, after a twelve-hour shift you quickly run out of breath, there is no point in fighting further. There may be stronger enemies ahead. Whatever happens next, all that remains is to watch."
There was also an option to return to the jungle, but he didn't really want to, because there were no people there.
It may seem strange, it seemed like the way was clear, but Nobu felt that escaping was a bad decision and decided to go back. You could get used to working 12 hours, they fed you adequately, and blindly risking getting under a bunch of machine guns and unknown quirks was stupid. The workers mostly died from beatings and further infection, so staying here was not critical.
"How long has it been, almost two months? Soon the Frost Breath will disappear. We must be even more careful."
