Chapter 104: Chapter 103 - The Headmaster's Manipulation.
[Chapter Size: 1900 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Lily was in the headmaster's office, while he led the way. Following him, she went to his desk. The headmaster went in front of her while grabbing some lemon sherbets and handed them to the girl, as he usually did every time.
Lily easily ate the candy while turning back to the headmaster with some sincerity. "Headmaster... how can I help you? Will Snape be alright? He won't have any trouble with the Ministry of Magic, right?" She seemed worried.
"You are certainly concerned about something happening to your friend... this is certainly a sudden change from the past few months... I see that you have rekindled your friendship with him," he praised with a certain cheer in his voice.
"Yes... it's hard to explain, headmaster..." Lily murmured uneasily.
"But you are much more concerned about him, which means things are starting to go well between you two... that is very good," he said, noting that Lily being there without Snape driving her away meant they had made some progress.
"I'm trying to start over with him..." she murmured.
"That is good... I heard that you two danced together at Professor Slughorn's monthly gathering, then left the party without telling anyone... I wasn't paying attention, but I heard some rumors that you had disappeared..." he said, looking into her eyes while quickly entering her mind.
"I..." Lily was about to respond while the headmaster tried to gather information on what had happened. The problem with the Auror certainly shocked him, but even he suspected that Snape could be the author of the massacre in the forest, and had called Lily here because of it.
However, what he found was Snape and her sitting somewhere in the castle talking, which left him perplexed, as he didn't expect to find that. Later, he took her to the office.
'Is that it... how strange... Snape doesn't seem to act so friendly with her... could this be a planted memory?' He couldn't help but mutter, feeling lost, as he had hoped to finally find proof that Snape was the one they were seeking.
"... and Snape and I went to talk a bit, and we discussed some things about Transfiguration," she murmured.
"I see..." Dumbledore was somewhat confused by this but continued. "Anyway... you seem closer to him than before," he commented.
Lily blushed slightly at this, with a small blush appearing. "Do you think... it's strange... after everything that happened... I can't explain it," she murmured, while Dumbledore nodded, satisfied with her reaction. After all, Lily being close to Snape was something he desired.
Since he didn't get anything from her memories, as he couldn't see anything that proved his thesis, he tried to see her thoughts on his suspicions.
"You know... that Auror, he attacked Snape saying he believed Snape had killed the dark wizards from Hogsmeade and the spiders in the Forbidden Forest... Do you believe that?" Dumbledore asked.
"What?! He believes Snape would do that?! That's absurd." Lily exclaimed with an expression of disbelief.
'She is telling the truth... there's no way she is lying...' Dumbledore thought, somewhat disappointed. Maybe those memories weren't planted after all, he began to conclude.
"I know it's a bit much to say that a student could do that... So the Ministry is dealing with that Auror," he said, but his mind thought differently.
'No... Snape has to be the one behind all of this... after what I saw that day... that black abyss... how he bypassed my Legilimency, he does things that no one else could so easily, I can't read his mind or even see his memories...' Dumbledore debated in his mind.
"So he will be alright, won't he, headmaster?" Lily murmured, still worried.
"Of course..." Dumbledore was lost. He had finally managed to plant a spy close to Snape, but in the end, he gained nothing, and even stranger things kept happening, leaving him in a difficult position. After all, the pressure from parents wanting to know if Hogwarts was still a safe school continued. The attacks by dark wizards against Muggle-borns, someone brutally killing dozens of dark wizards, and the strange events happening outside of Hogwarts whenever Snape was away, all continued, including the incident in the Forbidden Forest.
'What should I do...?' he asked himself.
"Headmaster..." Lily pulled him out of his thoughts.
"Yes, my dear?" he said, looking at her.
"If Snape is in trouble, you'll help him, won't you?" she asked.
"Of course... Snape is one of the most talented students at Hogwarts. I will never let him be unjustly accused," he said finally before sighing. "Now you may go, my dear. There is nothing more to be done here," he finished.
"Alright, goodbye." She said, leaving the office down the staircase.
When the door closed downstairs, the headmaster continued thinking about everything he had heard and seen.
"Headmaster Albus... how repugnant to use truth serum on a young girl..." one of the headmasters' portraits said with a tone of disdain, breaking the silence, while other headmaster portraits seemed to nod in agreement with their colleague.
"I am doing this for the good of the world," Albus simply replied.
"The good of the world... the girl said nothing out of the ordinary. I know that boy is indeed strange and seems to be more than meets the eye... But did she not tell the truth?" another headmistress asked.
"No... there's something wrong there..." he said with a tone of dissatisfaction, even more suspicious.
"I remember that girl crying several times when she came here, saying that Snape, the boy you speak of, despised her. Now she seems so enamored... Something feels suspicious... Don't tell me you..." the other headmaster looked at Albus with a stunned expression.
"Silence!!" the headmaster exclaimed. "Do not question my methods... I need to know, because I suspect that Snape may be the next Dark Lord, or worse... that he himself could take Voldemort's place. I have never met anyone who gave me such negative feelings before... Not to mention his growth in magic, which has been increasing throughout the year... his talent in every subject he touches, being able to wield Gryffindor's sword... This cannot be ignored." The headmaster exploded.
He knew a lot about Snape, but hadn't paid much attention because he had to deal with Voldemort's schemes. He knew that Snape sold potions through Professor Slughorn, his contact with the Black sisters, his constant disappearance from the school, how he had turned an innocent Ravenclaw girl into a powerful duelist... Snape was suspicious in everything he did, but Dumbledore had no control over him, couldn't read his mind or those of his companions, and even his planted spy had yielded no results.
He simply walked over to his desk, sitting while looking at Fawkes. She never seemed aggressive towards Snape, which left him alone in this, but he still maintained his suspicions.
"Perhaps it's time for me to face him myself..." Dumbledore sighed but said with a firm tone. It was time to end this once and for all, either to definitively expose himself or finally discover who Snape really was and what his goals were.
Meanwhile, Lily continued walking through the corridors, her goal clearly being to return to the hospital wing to see Snape, not wanting to miss seeing how he was doing again. It was strange, as if she had become obsessed with him, but she felt so good by his side and was so happy with him not repelling her.
'But this is strange...' she thought as she walked through the corridors. 'I clearly know everything that happened in the Forbidden Forest... my suspicions that Snape is the one who attacked Hogsmeade...' She knew all this, but her mouth moved automatically to say other things, not what she wanted to say. After all, Snape could be in danger, but her mouth seemed forced to say exactly what she wanted to hide, and in the end, said something else beyond her control... Lily didn't know what was happening to her as she continued through the corridors.
At the same time, Snape was alone after the Minister of Magic had left, as they had reached an agreement. He received information from the system that he had protected Lily from saying things due to being under a mental attack. Snape thought about how dirty the headmaster could be, and the moment he had the opportunity, he would teach him a lesson once and for all.
Snape stayed in the hospital wing for a day, and Lily came sometime later, while the girls resumed arguing, which he tried to ignore. In the end, Nurse Penelope expelled them a moment later.
Snape was the only person who stayed in the hospital wing that night, and at some point, he looked at the poster. "Why so much against me?" he asked, amused at the rule written on the poster.
Penelope was tidying up to go to her room next to the hospital wing and looked at him with a mocking expression.
"You still ask after everything that happened this year?" she said.
"But I've been behaving for a while," he retorted.
"Yes... but even so, I still hear some of them complaining about you, especially regarding women..." she said, aware of the rumors about Snape being around girls, expressing their envy of him.
"I don't know... maybe it's just charm." He was obliged to look at her with a small smile and wink. Penelope was in her 30s, young, with blonde hair and brown eyes. Snape didn't think she was unattractive at all.
"Tsk. Don't get cocky, boy. You may have your charm, but it would only work on me if I were single and younger. You're about ten years too late." She simply said, teasing him, and went to her room.
Snape didn't mind, at least enjoying himself a bit by provoking the nurse while going back to sleep. He couldn't even call Dobby to bring him something, so he simply closed his eyes and waited until dawn. He disappeared with the first ray of sunlight, with all his muscles recovered, while Lucinda arrived to visit him, finding his bed empty and questioning Penelope.
Snape ate in the Room of Requirement before heading to his classes. The professors had given him the news that he could take the day off, but he decided to finish the final exams that day so he wouldn't have to do them later.
Of course, the front page of the Hogwarts Observer featured him for the second time that week, concerning the latest event of him being attacked. People looked at him and gossiped, but it wasn't the first time he appeared in the paper. He and Bellatrix had also made it into the newspaper over a supposed lovers' quarrel, which left her furious, and Edmund Whitley, the newspaper's author, had to hide to avoid facing fatal attacks from the Black girl throughout the entire week.
Speaking of her, as soon as he finished the day's exams, he was confronted by her, growling at him while demanding to know why he had allowed himself to be attacked like that, that he could have fought the Auror, and how disappointed she was. This led to Snape asking if she was his mother or something, which made Bellatrix attack him. Snape had to defeat her in the middle of the corridors, while people saw him in a position that seemed like he was grabbing and kissing Bellatrix, fueling more gossip for the day.
