Chapter 291: First Mission (7) : Purify!
Stepping out of the mansion, under the slight drizzle Loki along with Dominic walked to all the small groups of Aurors that had surrounded the house and spoke to them.
"Could you please go to the second floor of the mansion?" Loki started out while Dominic stood beside him fixing his special badge on his pocket.
The Aurors in this group instantly frowned and wanted to retort about Loki's age but they stopped seeing Dominic's badge.
"Please." Loki said, "There is a possibility that you have been affected by the ritual that was performed in the room where the victim is sleeping."
A few Aurors' eyes widened but most of them were still dismissive of Loki's words.
Loki even felt like he'd heard them mumble something along the lines of-
'I wish they just died because of whatever demon he summoned…'
"Yeah? Then why haven't we died or worse gone mad yet!?" One of the aurors asked with a deep frown making dissent in the group visible.
Loki sighed but then put on a calm smile as he spoke, activating his charm as a swindler and his ability to push thoughts into his targets.
"I'm sure everything will be explained to you once you go to the first floor. This is for your own good. I'm sure all of us want what's best for each other don't we?"
The Aurors' eyes glazed slightly and almost immediately they all smiled softly while one of them came to the front and spoke to Loki while shaking his hand, "Of course, yes, thank you for taking care of us."
Loki nodded and moved to the next group.
"How did you do that!?" Dominic asked amazed.
"Eh…erm…I'm sure they got scared by the scream of that doll from earlier. Yeah, let's go with that, why not."
Dominic looked at Loki suspiciously but didn't say anything else since he'd just made their work easier.
Doing the job a few more times Loki gathered all the Aurors around the mansion. But along with doing his job, he'd noticed something else that he'd neglected to do before. Using his spirit vision he found that all the aurors were actually corrupted, just like the dog.
'Why did the puppet react so violently to being corrupted but everyone else seems to be doing just fine?'
Although confused by his findings, Loki walked back to the mansion with Dominic. As they climbed the stairs, groups of aurors came walking back down.
"Thank you for helping us kiddo. I haven't felt better in years!" One of the Aurors thanked Loki for all of them.
"I guess they feel good now?" Loki asked Dominic and he just shrugged his shoulders. "Perhaps the purification removed the hidden effects of various curses they've run into during their time working?" Dominic tried to explain.
"I guess…"
By the time Loki and Dominic were back on the first floor, all the aurors were done with their purification and were already returning since they heard Laura say, "You can return to your posts now. We'll take care of things from here."
"That was quick." Loki commented.
"Thank you for your work.", Laura said back to him.
Loki nodded but didn't get the opportunity to say much else since Ethan spoke.
"It's our time to leave.", Ethan said causing Loki to tense since although he didn't want to spend another minute here, he also for some reason wanted to see this situation through since he'd already become so involved in it.
"Why not stay here for a while until Madam Drake is done with her work? As a backup in case something happens?" Loki immediately said, but he didn't use his abilities as a swindler just in case Laura spotted something happening.
And just as Loki felt Dominic was about to interrupt and say something else, he stepped on his toes subtly to shut him up.
"I mean we still don't know why the curse activates. The Aurors were fine even though they had been cursed while the doll of death reacted to it immediately, perhaps there's a hidden dimension to all this that we don't know yet?"
"So it'd be safer if we waited for a while, right? I mean as long as we don't go into the room covered by the wall of spirituality we should be fine right?"
"And we even have enough time since it's still the afternoon and students wouldn't have returned to Hogwarts already."
Ethan frowned but all the students smiled and looked at him with beady eyes. Everyone was eager to see how the situation ended after having gotten so involved in it.
"*Sigh* I guess we're staying." Ethan said, "But we're going to stay outside the mansion. I don't want us to be a burden to her if things turn south."
Laura nodded and spoke to Dominic, "I know I brought you here to accompany me on your first real job, but seeing how dangerous the work has been till now, I want you to remain outside along with the others."
Dominic frowned a little but nodded anyway.
As Ethan began to leave the floor with all the students and Dominic, everyone looked at Loki with a grateful expression, causing him to laugh a little looking at how curious they were.
Laura looked at everyone leaving and steeled her eyes as she turned around to look at the wall of spirituality in front of her.
Once everyone left the mansion she stepped through the wall of spirituality and entered the room.
Everything that entered her vision gave off a sense of normalcy, there was a bed in the corner on which a man slept peacefully, a table under a large window that held several books, some open, most closed, there was a full-length mirror and a dark walnut cupboard in another corner in which was a drawer filled with various Beyonder ingredients.
A sweet fragrance filled the room as a small altar with three candles was burning in the centre of the room.
Everything felt terribly normal.
Yet Laura felt her skin curl.
Almost as soon as she entered the room, she'd started feeling something try and continuously corrupt her spirit body.
She heard constant whispers that buzzed at the back of her mind and her fingers trembled a little due to the constant increase of the anticipation that was building within her.
But her strong demigod soul easily fought off the corruption and kept it at bay.
'Why haven't the candles melted yet?' Laura noticed since the candles looked like they'd been lit only a few seconds before she'd entered the room.
Laura waved her hand and covered herself in a thin spatial armour that clung to her body before she walked closer to the altar on the ground.
She looked at the man sleeping peacefully in the bed and then at the altar with a little apprehension.
'Did he start the ritual and then fall asleep?'
But before she could think further she suddenly felt a strong gaze lock onto her.
