Lucas was the first to strike.
“I’ll go first.”
He channeled his mana, reinforcing his body. The pure, potent mana he’d cultivated through countless Elixirs surged through him, amplifying his already formidable strength. He lowered his stance, spear poised, ready to unleash his attack.
“HAAAAAAAAAA!”
With a powerful shout, he kicked off the ground, darting towards the golem with the speed of lightning. Even I, who was standing right next to him, found it hard to keep up with his speed. Lucas’s spear struck the golem before it could even swing its massive arm.
The spear pierced the golem’s left leg, sending it crumbling to the ground. The golem staggered, its balance thrown off.
The students erupted in cheers.
“He took down that massive golem with a single blow!”
“Maybe the golems are weaker than we thought?”
“You wouldn’t even be able to scratch it! That was an incredible display of skill from His Highness!”
“Yeah, the Crown Prince is amazing!”
The students who had been fighting the smaller monsters, convinced the battle was already won, began to celebrate. But Lucas, sensing danger, quickly retreated.
It was a wise decision. If the golems were that easy to defeat, this wouldn’t be a “defeat event,” and I wouldn’t have spent over a hundred attempts trying to beat it in Croaka.
WHAM—!
With an earth-shattering impact, the golem’s fist slammed into the ground where Lucas had been standing moments before. A crater formed in the earth, as if a meteor had struck. And the golem’s leg… the one Lucas had clearly pierced… it was completely healed.
If Lucas hadn’t retreated, that crater wouldn’t have been in the ground… it would have been in him.
The students’ cheers turned to shrieks of terror.
“W-What was that?!”
“There’s another one of those things?!”
“There’s no way we students can beat something like that!”
Those were the golem’s two defining traits — devastating power and near-instant regeneration.
And the mastermind behind these monstrosities… was Professor Idra.
I could practically see the twisted professor chuckling to himself as she watched the students panic.
I turned to Clara, who was observing the golem with a detached calmness.
“Wow, that’s one tough golem, huh? What do you think, Clara? Still no comment on my… motivational speech?”
Ignoring my attempts to get a rise out of her, Clara began chanting a spell, her expression focused. Why wouldn’t she just talk to me?
As Clara continued her chanting, I could see mana gathering around her. Despite having used up a lot of mana to deal with the monsters earlier, she didn’t seem to care about conserving what was left. In reality, she probably never ran out of mana. The reason for that was her trait, [Infinite Mana].
Though it wasn’t actually infinite, she had a near-limitless reservoir of mana. This trait was notoriously overpowered in Croaka. Because of this unique ability, the master of the Magic Tower, who was known for never taking on students, had personally offered to mentor Clara.
As she finished her incantation, an enormous fireball blazed on the tip of her staff.
“Fireball.”
“Clara? How can you call that a ‘fireball’? It’s more like a meteor!”
If a typical mage’s fireball was the size of a human head, Clara’s fireball resembled a meteor.
Annoyed by my constant chatter, Clara pointed her staff—and the meteor-like fireball—towards me.
“Eeek! You’re not actually going to throw that at me, are you? Unlike the golem, I’ll definitely die if I get hit by that! I’ve still got so many things I haven’t done yet. I can’t die so absurdly!”
“Can both of you see me?”
Lucas was dodging the golem’s attacks, striking back with his spear, but as he was dodging its thick arms, he couldn’t put as much destructive force behind his blows as he had in the past, and whatever damage he did manage to inflict was rapidly regenerated by the golem.
“Tch.”
“Did I just hear you click your tongue? You weren’t actually going to aim that at me if the golem wasn’t here, were you?”
Clara didn’t say a word to all my comments as she launched a meteor-like fireball at the golem. Lucas knew this was coming and quickly dodged to the side as the fireball came into contact with the golem’s body.
Boom—!!!!
The fireball hit the golem, resulting in a massive explosion. Smoke filled the area around us as everyone was waiting for the smoke to clear off.
As the smoke dissipated, we saw the golem, with about half of its upper body blown away. The most crucial part was that within the damaged torso, a blue orb became visible. That was the golem’s core. Destroying it would make the golem disappear.
“Lucas! There, the blue orb! Destroy that thing and the golem disappears.”
“I’m curious how you know that… but I’ll take your word for it.”
Fast as can be, Lucas charged into the golem’s core before its body had time to replenish.
This was precisely the technique that I used to defeat the golem back in Croaka.
That was the strategy I’d used in Croaka. Keep one golem busy while a powerful ally dealt a devastating blow, exposing its core. Then, strike the core before it could regenerate. And in Croaka, that powerful ally had been… Clara.
Just as Lucas was about to strike the core, the other golem, which had remained inactive until now, suddenly sprang to life. This was unexpected. I’d assumed that both golems shared the same activation trigger—being attacked—but it seemed I was wrong.
“Lucas, look out!”
Caught off guard, Lucas had no time to dodge. He managed to raise his spear in defense, but the sheer force of the blow sent him flying, crashing into me.
He scrambled to his feet, never taking his eyes off the golem, his own injuries forgotten.
“Damn it! It’s already regenerated!”
Even amidst all this chaos, Clara, the analytical mage, was calm.
“Even if we manage to expose one golem’s core, the other one will just protect it. This is going to be troublesome.”
As I wracked my brains for a solution, a crazy, almost impossible idea took root in my mind.
Could it actually work…?
“Lucas, Clara, I think I have a plan.”
They looked at me, a mixture of skepticism and curiosity on their faces.
“The problem is the regeneration, right? One golem heals while the other one protects it.”
“That’s right.”
“…………”
Lucas nodded to it, but Clara stayed silent. I stared her down. If she’s not gonna chip into the conversation, then I’m not gonna tell my super genius idea.
“Sigh… Fine, that’s the problem. What’s the solution?” Clara finally asked, irritated.
“If regeneration is the problem… then we simply need to obliterate both golems simultaneously, leaving no cores behind!” I declared, feeling like Columbus discovering a new world.
Lucas and Clara stared at me, incredulous. If only it were that easy…
“Loki,” Lucas asked, his voice laced with a sliver of hope. “Are you saying… you have an attack that powerful?”
Haah! As if!
“Of course not!” There was no way I had an attack that devastating. My only weapon was my handsome face.
“But… what if we attacked at the same time?”
I might not be capable of such a feat, but they were. I might not have the firepower, but they did. It would take some time to prepare, but…
Listening to my plan, and thinking it over, Lucas and Clara came up with two requirements for it to work.
The first was that they needed time to prepare their attacks, during which the golems couldn’t attack them.
The second was that both golems had to be in the same place when the attack was launched.
“Heh, those two conditions? Leave them to me.”
“We need at least ten minutes, Loki. Are you sure you can keep those two golems busy for that long?” Lucas asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
“You two focus on preparing your attacks. The golems won’t get near you, I promise.”
With my reassuring—if slightly arrogant—words ringing in their ears, Lucas and Clara began to gather their power.
Clara immediately launched into a complex incantation. Unlike her previous spell, the words she spoke were unintelligible, sounding more like a chorus of tormented screams than a language spoken by mortals. The sheer power of her chanting sent chills down my spine.
Meanwhile, an aura in golden color had covered Lucas. It was pure, simple majesty in its most unadulterated form, so beyond awe that I almost felt a sense of wanting to kneel in reverence.
Both of them closed their eyes, focusing entirely on their preparations, completely disregarding the golems. Their unwavering belief that the golems wouldn’t reach them was overwhelming and exhilarating.
Here I was, standing alongside these legendary figures… people I’d only ever seen through a computer screen… and they were trusting me with their lives.
“If they’re willing to take the risk, then it’s only right that I do the same.”
I activated my unique skill, [Illusion]. Unlike when I entertained the little girl earlier, this time I wasn’t creating simple animals like a dog or a cat.
I focused on the image in my mind, the one I intended to manifest. I was confident that even Johanna, with her incredible perceptiveness, would have a hard time distinguishing this illusion as fake. That’s because it was something I had created most often with my illusions.
And then, it appeared. My creation materialized in the training ground, sending a wave of shock through the students.
“How is that even possible?!”
“I’ve never seen or heard of magic like that!”
“Is that even magic?”
“There are ten of him?!”
What appeared was an illusion of myself.
Now, there were ten of me in the academy hall training ground.
“Alright, let’s put on a spectacular show, shall we?”
And with that, all ten of me charged towards the golems.
