chapter 38
38. Momo’s in a Bad Mood
“Speaking of which, Momo. What about school today?”
I ask her as soon as we leave the university grounds and enter a street a little off the path to the station.
“I told you earlier. It’s a holiday for the foundation anniversary.”
“No, no, have you forgotten that I’m also an alumni of the same high school?”
Sonobe High School, the alma mater of Momo and me, has its foundation anniversary in winter.
“Tch, you won’t trick me.”
She realized the lie immediately, but I didn’t point it out in front of Izaki because I had a rough idea of the reason.
“Have you been on duty since morning?”
Being a hero, there’s no difference between weekdays and holidays. Just like a magical girl skipping class to fight monsters, Momo has sacrificed some of her high school life to focus on her hero work.
“Yeah. I usually leave the duties during school hours to other heroes, but this case involved an airplane engine problem, so Momo had to go. Nightingale and Sunflower aren’t suited for aerial maneuvers.”
“What about Akane-san?”
“…She was dealing with Shadow somewhere else.”
She answered with a slightly sulky tone. Oops, Akane-san’s name was a taboo topic.
“But that’s amazing, you stopped a crashing plane, right?”
“To be precise, I just adjusted its course and descent speed and made it land in a river. But no one died, isn’t that amazing?”
It’s no wonder that such a feat would make the news right away. The reason Izaki suddenly started talking about Philanthropy Pink earlier must be because the topic was trending online.
“As expected of Momo, I bet Philanthropy Pink’s fanbase will grow even more.”
In the past, such a miraculous feat where everyone would have been talked about for years, but in the present day where heroes are commonplace, it’s only a miracle that happens once a year. Even if it was caused by Shadow or even if it was just an accident, heroes have to save everyone equally, and with each “miracle” they perform, their individual feats become less remarkable and more commonplace.
I think the world should be more considerate of them.
Because of Izaki’s vulgar talk earlier, I can’t help but notice the gap between the world and heroes, something I usually try not to think about. Even though it’s pointless for me to get angry when Momo and the others haven’t asked me to.
“Hmm, but it does make me feel better when Senpai praises me like this.”
While I’m fuming over the world, which is an impossible entity to deal with, she says something like that, which makes me want to support her as Philanthropy Blue as much as I can.
“If that’s all it takes, I’ll do it as much as you want. I’ll treat you to ramen like a proper senpai.”
“hehehehe, lucky me.”
I didn’t mean it as if she had to save lives, but the efforts of heroes deserve more than just the praise of ordinary citizens. Even though I’m a fellow Sentai hero, I don’t have any powers, so I’ m in a unique position, right between heroes and ordinary people. Perhaps because of that, I might be able to understand the struggles that they face.
As part of Filan Blue’s mission, we need to cheer them up, but as a hero fan and a citizen who wishes for world peace, I’d like to lighten Momo’s burden even a little.
“Speaking of which, wouldn’t it have been better to go to school in the afternoon?”
“I don’t like that, I’ll become a delinquent.”
“Isn’t skipping school being a delinquent?”
“That’s how people will think of me. If I take a day off, I can say that I caught a cold.”
I see. Momo is at that age, she must be worried about what her classmates will think of her. A bright and cute girl like Momo would probably be popular at school. She’s the type that I, being in the upper caste, wouldn’t t dare approach.
“It would be easier if I just dropped out like Himawari-chan, but my parents would worry.”
“Eh, Himawari dropped out!?”
No wonder she’s always in her room when I go to the base. Himawari doesn’t talk much about herself unless I ask, so I didn’t know because I was afraid of stepping on a landmine and didn’t ask her anything personal.
“That’s right. She’s still enrolled, but she’s only attended the entrance ceremony.”
“Doesn’t the doctor say anything?”
“Well, Himawari-chan is strong. She’s been very active lately.”
Of course, the doctor is not Himawari’s guardian or teacher, but her boss. If she gives up her life as an ordinary person, she can concentrate more on her work as a hero.
“But…”
I knew from the news that Filan Yellow had been more active in the past month. When I asked the doctor, he said that Himawari had asked him to increase her dispatch frequency.
If I’m not being conceited, the reason why Himawari suddenly started working harder must be me. Her desire to help as many citizens as possible as a hero is what motivated her.
But isn’t it a problem that she doesn’t go to school at all?
“Doesn’t Himawari want to go to junior high school?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t think she’s interested.”
Not high school or university, but junior high school. Shouldn’t compulsory education be received regardless of interest? School is a society for children. Even if she doesn’t have a family, even if her work as a hero is important, is it okay to isolate a child who can’t think about her future on her own from society?
“But isn’t that bad? It may be fine now, but Himawari might regret it when she becomes an adult.”
She can’t be a hero forever. If Himawari is no longer Filan Yellow, what will happen to her if she has nowhere else to go and is still a child who doesn’t know society?
“At the very least, she should go to junior high school. It’s inevitable that she’ll be absent, but there’s more to learn at school than just studying, and as a child, there must be a lot to gain from interacting with people her own age. Even if it’s not the same as an ordinary junior high school student, she should at least be integrated into society. Otherwise, Himawari’s future…”
“Excuse me, senpai?”
When I noticed, the narrowed eyebrows peeking out from the dome-shaped umbrella were glaring at me.
“You’re with Momo, but don’t you think you’re thinking about Himawari-chan too much?”
“Eh? Ah, sorry.”
“That’s okay, but I know senpai is kind. But today, Momo is monopolizing senpai for a change, so I feel lonely if you get too caught up in your own thoughts.”
With a lonely expression like a child who was left alone, she glared up at me with resentment. Is it because she’s jealous of something so trivial and cute?
“Somehow, senpai feels like a good older brother.”
“I’m sorry. I was just thinking about something.”
Her slightly discontented expression was a gap from the usual Momo and was even cuter, but I’ll refrain from saying that because I’ll get scolded.
