Chapter 172: Chapter 172 Capital
A gentle breeze swept through the courtyard, causing the tree branches to tilt slightly in one direction. Logan turned over and sat up from the wooden floor.
"Obtain the fiscal distribution of the Land of Fire, especially the detailed expenditures for the Ninja Village, huh..." Logan plucked a weed from the ground and tossed it aside, "So you're saying I have to produce some valuable intel, right?"
'Fine, let's do it. To understand the mysteries of Space-Time Ninjutsu as much as possible, although it is unknown whether Zetsu's so-called internal documents will be useful, it's still worth a try.'
"But speaking of detailed finances..." Logan glanced in a certain direction, where a few kilometers away lay the Konoha's administrative headquarters. Many village information was housed there, and it was guarded by ANBU all day round. Logan had entered there twice before.
"I'm not foolish enough to infiltrate and steal from there." Logan muttered speechlessly.
Financial distribution data can indeed be found within Konoha, but it would be incredibly difficult. Logan does not have any amazing stealth skills, so the risk is too great. He might get surrounded before finding anything. So, the plan to act within Konoha was quickly dismissed.
"The remaining options are the Daimyo or the Minister of Finance. The Land of Fire's finances... it's obviously easier for the place where Samurai are the main force of the guards."
Suddenly, a few figures flew over the courtyard wall. They are Ninjas from Konoha. Each of them leaped from wall to wall with urgency.
'It seemed they were either on duty or handling some civil issue. The leader was an Elite Chunin. Logan looked up and was still pulling weeds out of boredom. The Ninjas' wall-running shook the loose dust, dirtying a large part of the courtyard.
Seeing that the dust that had accumulated for a long time had shaken down and made a large area of the courtyard dirty, Logan couldn't stand it and started yelling.
"Hey, hey, this is a private residence, don't use it as a shortcut! Do you have any sense of courtesy?"
The shadows slowed slightly upon hearing the shout. A Chuninn looked over and secretly thought, 'It's not our fault you don't clean up. We're just helping knock down the dust.'
"Ah, sorry, we are in a hurry to handle an urgent matter!"
The group sped up again, the leading Chunin politely apologizing before they disappeared once more.
"Honestly…"
Logan watched them leave and sighed. It was obviously unrealistic to ask the other party to stay and clean up the mess. He then clapped his hands and got up to fetch a broom.
As he swept the floor, three more Ninjas ran past the open courtyard gate. Logan glanced at them, but his hands kept moving, "With the Chunin Exams almost starting, everyone is very busy."
'With the influx of people, tension rose, and whether they are outsiders or restless locals, incidents were bound to occur.'
'But it had nothing to do with me.' While Logan swept, he slowed down as he thought of something.
'If I don't steal from Konoha, I have to go to the Capital of the Land of Fire..."
A person whom he hasn't seen for a long time pops up in his mind, and the images of those words near the gate of Capital are still vivid in his mind.
"I wonder how she's doing." In fact, during his three years of training outside, he could go there and visited. Even when the Third Hokage called him back, he could have checked in. His promise to 'I'll visit when I have time' was undeniably broken. What Logan is escaping from is the conflict between his Ninja identity and her ordinary life. He cannot be like those male protagonists in light novels, who can effortlessly gather women and built a harem without any thought. After all, the life here is very real.
He has a very deep memory of Hoshino Sumika, but their interactions were sparse, marred by incompatibility. Hence, she rarely occupied his thoughts, only remaining a fond memory.
Perhaps Logan could be more open-minded. After more than three years, much could change. The girl's promise during her ignorant youth might have long faded. According to the habit of ordinary women in this era of early marriage, the graceful ceremonial envoy with her red agate eyes dancing in the sunset might already be married.
After dumping the trash and putting away the broom, Logan stretched in the sunlight, "Alright, let's go to the Capital then!"
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura each felt a mix of anxiety and excitement as they headed to Room 301 with their signed registration forms, and met Kakashi who had been waiting there.
Logan departed Konoha, heading toward the Land of Fire's Capital as the main storyline continued to unfold with everyone converging on Konoha.
…
Capital is not too far from Konoha Village. And with Logan's travel speed, he could arrive there on the same day.
By the time he reached the city walls, the sun was already setting. The main roads were vast and well-kept, with scattered villages and towns lighting up as night fell. The imposing city walls stretched as far as the eye could see, and the towering gates were bustling with people, carriages, and horses moving back and forth in the dimming light. As the most prosperous city on this continent, Land of Fire's Capital's political and economic influence was becoming increasingly evident.
Logan, dressed in casual clothes, followed a carriage into the city. The entrance fee was higher than on his previous visit.
'Is it due to inflation?'
With such random thoughts, Logan walked into the streets. When he left Konoha, he had told the Chunin guarding the gate that he was 'going out to relax'. They had no reason to stop him, and even if Hiruzen found out, he would likely understand. Besides, Hiruzen was probably too busy with the Chunin Exams to worry about him.
If he had jumped over the city walls, finding lodging would have been problematic. Logan first found an inn to secure a room. There was no rush to steal the financial information. It would be safely stashed in the Daimyo's or the Minister of Finance's quarters, and he had plenty of time.
Capital's nightlife was already showing signs of being open all night, with constant music and entertainment. Logan wandered around, sampling various snacks, watching street performances, and admiring the peaceful and thriving atmosphere. Then, he started inquiring about Sumika.
Visiting an old acquaintance after years wasn't easy, especially with no prior contact. The Capital had changed significantly over the years. When Logan found the place he stayed during his last mission, it had changed to a different establishment, making him feel awkward.
He seemed unable to find her. Logan wandered around the city center, knowing he couldn't enter the inner part of the Daimyo's Mansion without permission, and jumping over the walls would be too conspicuous. He thought of the tall and handsome Samurai captain, Sanada Hanjiro. Logan felt he might know about the lady envoy, but Logan had no way to contact him...
In the end, Logan thickened his skin and approached an official office just before closing time. Taking out the Konoha's Ninja Certificate to ease their concerns, he then asked the official where the lady envoy lived. When asked the reason, Logan lied without missing a beat, saying he was a fan of music (pop music), literature (web novels), and painting (anime and manga) and had come to visit during his mission break.
The official was pleased and gave Logan the directions. After leaving the office, Logan wiped the sweat off his forehead.
There was only one game missing. If it wasn't quite right, he would have said it casually. After all, he was already confident about it (a killing game), and then he would have covered the entire ACGN spectrum.
