Chapter 15: Chapter 15
At the same time as the meeting between Konstantin and Hydra, Jacob stood before the gathered Remnants, their anxious faces illuminated by the flickering glow of torches. The weight of centuries pressed down on him as he prepared to reveal the truth he had hidden for generations.
"I am Jacob," he began, his voice steady and calm, though his gaze betrayed the depth of his emotions. "But I am not merely your leader. I am the Deathless Prophet, the one who led your ancestors from the fires of Constantinople to this valley."
Gasps rippled through the crowd, murmurs of disbelief and awe spreading among them. Only Sofia, standing stoically to the side, remained silent, her expression unreadable.
Jacob raised a hand, and the crowd quieted. "For centuries, we have protected the Divine Source and the secrets of Kitezh. We have sacrificed much—our lives, our homes, our loved ones—to preserve this valley and its legacy. But now, I ask you for one final sacrifice: to leave."
The murmur grew louder, voices filled with confusion and protest. Jacob continued, his tone firm but compassionate. "There is no need to protect the ancient city anymore. What remains there is a curse, not a blessing. I will stay behind to ensure the Divine Source disappears forever, that it never falls into the hands of Trinity, Hydra, or any other enemy who would seek to exploit its power."
He turned toward Sofia, his daughter, and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Sofia will be your new leader. She will guide you as you leave this valley and build a better future for your children, free from the shadow of war and persecution."
Sofia's expression flickered, her stoic demeanor cracking for just a moment as she nodded to the people. "I will do everything I can to lead us to safety," she said firmly.
Jacob's voice softened as he addressed the crowd one last time. "Go. Take different paths, different routes, but find a new home. Leave this valley and its burdens behind. This is my final request as your prophet—and as your leader."
The crowd stood in stunned silence, the enormity of the moment sinking in. Some wept quietly, while others exchanged determined nods. Slowly, the realization that this was the only way to preserve their people took hold.
Jacob looked to Sofia, giving her a reassuring nod. "I'll see this through to the end," he said quietly. "But this must be the last chapter for the Remnants in this place."
Sofia swallowed hard but said nothing. She turned to the crowd and began organizing them into groups, her voice steady even as her heart ached.
As the Remnants dispersed, Jacob remained behind, his gaze fixed on the distant glacier. His resolve hardened, knowing this was the only way to protect the future of his people—and to finally end the curse of the Divine Source.
"Clap! Clap! Clap!" The sound of deliberate, slow applause echoed through the quiet valley. Jacob turned around to see Lara standing nearby, her expression exaggerated with mock emotion, tears comically streaming down her face.
"Beautiful! Five stars!" Lara said with an overly dramatic sniff, clutching her chest as if deeply moved.
Jacob sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Couldn't you just give me a moment to reflect and not ruin the atmosphere?"
"No," Lara replied instantly, her tone as sharp as a whip. Her smirk made it clear she had no regrets.
Lara, her curiosity piqued, asked, "How do you know Hydra is the successor to the Brotherhood of the Spear?"
Jacob turned to her, his expression contemplative. "I was a member of the Brotherhood of the Shield," he replied simply. "So I know a few things."
Lara's eyes widened in surprise. She had expected Jacob, as a thousand-year-old relic of a man in the Marvel universe, to know some interesting tidbits, but this revelation was beyond her expectations. "Wait—you knew Leonardo, Newton, and Galilei?" she blurted out. "If you were in the Brotherhood of the Shield, did you learn what the blue stone—the Divine Source—is?"
Jacob hesitated, his face betraying a hint of reluctance. But after a moment, he sighed and said, "It's Titan technology. It was created by the Titans in an attempt to mimic the resurrection process of the Eternals, who are connected to the Machine that is Earth. Unlike the Machine, which uses human life for resurrection, the Divine Source uses parts of your soul, eating your soul little by little. If you lack even a trace of Titan DNA, the Source will completely consume your soul. And worse, you'll become it's puppet."
Lara's jaw dropped. "Wait—you have Titan DNA? You're part Titan?" she asked, the words tumbling out before she could stop herself. 'This old antique has Titan DNA?' she thought, struggling to wrap her head around it.
Jacob nodded solemnly. "Yes. I'm the tenth generation of a lineage that began with a Titan and a human. Sofia, as my daughter, is the eleventh. According to my family's records, our Titan ancestor came to Earth after the Mad Titan, Thanos, destroyed their home—the moon of Titan. Gravely injured, she gave birth to my human-titan ancestor but died shortly after. Before she passed, she left a warning: never use the Divine Source. But… I broke that warning."
His voice carried a weight of guilt and regret as he continued. "That's the legacy passed down through my family records, though these are long gone, losing them when I left the Byzantine Empire."
Lara, for once, was left speechless. She took a moment to process everything before finally asking, "Why are you telling me this?"
Jacob smiled faintly, his gaze softening. "Because I won't be in this world much longer. I wanted someone to know the truth before I'm gone. And… I have a feeling we have something in common."
