Chapter 1276: Squirtle's Unexpected Discovery
Under Mewtwo's guidance, Yuga quickly arrived at the island where Mewtwo's companions resided.
However, when Yuga got there, he discovered that the island was teeming with wild Pokémon, especially Wingull and Pelipper. The island was almost completely overrun by them.
The beach was also crawling with various Pokémon such as Krabby, Kingler, Cloyster, Staryu, Corphish, Corsola, and others.
Even Mewtwo was shocked by the sight. "Why are there suddenly so many wild Pokémon on this island?" The resources on the island were not abundant, and the sudden influx of so many Pokémon would likely lead to food shortages. Mewtwo began to feel concerned for the well-being of its companions.
Mewtwo's arrival terrified the wild Pokémon. Taking advantage of the chaos, Yuga managed to catch one and question it. He quickly learned that all these wild Pokémon had fled to this island because of the battle between Mewtwo and Manaphy.
The clash between several Legendary Pokémon and Level 100 Pokémon not only disrupted the ocean's ecosystem but also caused massive tsunamis and drastically altered the weather in the surrounding seas. Many wild Pokémon were left homeless.
Although the League was doing its best to rescue and settle the affected wild Pokémon, the sheer number in this region was overwhelming. The League's resources were limited, so they prioritized aiding severely injured Pokémon. Those who were merely displaced but otherwise unharmed had no choice but to fend for themselves.
This island, where Mewtwo's companions resided, was not the only one affected. Other islands in the vicinity, less impacted by the battle, were also flooded with "refugees."
Most of these Pokémon had encountered Mewtwo before and had vivid memories of its overwhelming power. As a result, they fled in terror the moment they saw it.
After learning the truth, Yuga earnestly said to Mewtwo, "Look at what happens when you act recklessly. How many Pokémon have been affected? What did they do to deserve this?"
Mewtwo was visibly stunned. It hadn't realized its actions would cause so much devastation for so many Pokémon. A deep sense of guilt welled up in its heart.
Seeing Mewtwo's remorseful expression, Yuga decided not to push further. While Mewtwo lacked understanding in many areas, it was something that could only be addressed gradually over time.
Mewtwo's nature was fundamentally kind. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been wandering from place to place with its companions. Without the burden of protecting them, Mewtwo, as a Legendary Pokémon, could have lived comfortably anywhere and wouldn't have given Yuga the opportunity to convince it to join him.
Worried about its companions, Mewtwo and Yuga quickly made their way to the center of the island, where they found the cloned Pokémon. Just as Mewtwo had feared, the sudden influx of wild Pokémon had depleted the island's food resources. The cloned Pokémon hadn't eaten anything for two days.
Not only had all the regular food been consumed, but even the grass and tree leaves had been stripped bare, leaving large patches of barren land.
The cloned Pokémon were overjoyed to see Mewtwo return. During the days Mewtwo had been gone, they had been terribly worried. They couldn't eat or sleep properly, and all of them had visibly lost weight.
As soon as Mewtwo landed, the cloned Pokémon surrounded it, bombarding it with questions about what had happened and why it had been away for so long. Mewtwo patiently answered each of their questions. The gentle expression on its face was something Yuga hadn't seen during their entire time together.
To Mewtwo, these cloned Pokémon were incredibly important. They were its family, and protecting them was its mission.
Mewtwo explained to the cloned Pokémon that it planned to take them to live in Yuga's Ecopark. Although the cloned Pokémon were surprised that Mewtwo would trust a human, their trust in Mewtwo was absolute. Without hesitation, they agreed to the plan.
In truth, the cloned Pokémon had a much better impression of humans compared to Mewtwo. Since their birth, they had encountered very few humans and had not experienced the events Mewtwo endured with Team Rocket. Naturally, they had no reason to dislike humans.
It was only because Mewtwo disliked humans that they followed suit.
After introducing Yuga, the cloned Pokémon curiously examined him. Smiling, Yuga said, "You all must be hungry. I've brought food for everyone." As he spoke, he retrieved several cans of Pokéblocks from his space backpack, with Pokeblock for every type Pokemon.
Yuga had anticipated the food issue before coming.
While he hadn't predicted a food shortage on the island, he had thought about how to quickly win over the cloned Pokémon. Offering food was the most efficient way, and now it seemed like a fortunate coincidence.
Having gone hungry for several days, the cloned Pokémon were even more easily moved by the sight of food.
As expected, upon hearing about the food, their eyes lit up, and they quickly surrounded him.
Yuga distributed the Pokéblocks one by one according to each Pokémon's type. Although the cloned Pokémon had never eaten Pokéblocks before and were puzzled by the small size of the portions, they swallowed them in one gulp.
As soon as the Pokéblocks entered their stomachs, the cloned Pokémon felt full. One by one, they licked their lips, craving more. Yuga handed out another round, and only after eating a second Pokeblock did the Pokémon contentedly let out burps of satisfaction.
While the cloned Pokémon were eating, Yuga took the opportunity to observe them.
Onix, Gyarados, Seadra, Golduck, Psyduck, Blastoise, Squirtle, Charizard, Venusaur, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Scyther, Meowth, Sandslash, Wigglytuff, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Rhyhorn, Rapidash, Vulpix, Ninetales, Victreebel, Tentacruel, Dewgong, Vaporeon, Hitmonlee, and Pidgeot—a total of 27 Pokémon.
Among them, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Pikachu, and Charizard were clones of Ash's Pokémon. Onix and Vulpix were clones of Brock's Pokémon, Psyduck was a clone of Misty's, and Meowth was a clone of Team Rocket's Meowth.
However, unlike Team Rocket's Meowth, this Meowth couldn't speak human language.
Compared to regular Pokémon, these clones had distinctive black markings on their bodies, giving them a mysterious and eerie appearance. This was one of the reasons Mewtwo frequently relocated them—their unusual looks often caused them to be ostracized by wild Pokémon.
What's more, all of these cloned Pokémon were of green or blue potential Pokémon, and their levels were remarkably high. The clones weren't exact replicas of their originals, something even Mewtwo couldn't fully understand.
"Mewtwo actually used cloning technology to create so many extraordinary Pokémon!" Yuga marveled inwardly. He couldn't help but acknowledge that Mewtwo was a true genius.
However, Mewtwo explained that the birth of these cloned Pokémon was a result of various fortunate coincidences. Even if the same conditions were replicated now, it would be impossible to create identical Pokémon again.
Even if Mewtwo had the capability, Yuga had no intention of exploiting the cloned Pokémon. Cloning technology, after all, goes against ethical principles. If such technology were to spread, it would bring chaos to the world.
In fact, Mewtwo deeply regretted creating these cloned Pokémon. Because of its selfish desires, these Pokémon had suffered endless scorn and discrimination.
This was precisely why Mewtwo had always wanted to find a secluded paradise for them to live in peace.
The current Mewtwo was no longer the cynical being it once was. It now understood that having brought these lives into the world, it bore a responsibility to care for them.
Yuga, however, felt it would be a great pity if Mewtwo's extraordinary talent for cutting-edge technology went to waste. If cloning technology couldn't be used, then Mewtwo could be encouraged to explore other research fields.
Coincidentally, Yuga had a laboratory that would be the perfect place for Mewtwo to learn and contribute.
Currently, the lab was primarily run by three Malamar. Although their abilities had been sealed, Yuga could never fully trust them. If Mewtwo could replace them, it would be the best outcome for everyone.
Initially, Yuga had planned to train the Rotom Computer and two Meowstic as researchers. However, while the Rotom Computer excelled at data processing, it wasn't as skilled at conducting research. The two Meowstic were even less capable, functioning only as assistants, completely unable to undertake independent research.
Yuga decided that once he returned, he would have a serious discussion with Mewtwo about this idea.
After the cloned Pokémon had eaten their fill, Yuga began discussing with Mewtwo about storing them in Poké Balls.
When it came time to store the cloned Squirtle, Yuga noticed it hesitating as if it had something to say. Curious, Yuga asked, "What's wrong? Is there something you want to tell me?"
Squirtle glanced at Mewtwo, unsure whether to speak. This only made Yuga more puzzled.
Mewtwo, sensing the situation, said, "Since you've decided to move to Yuga's place, there's nothing you can't say. Go ahead."
Only then did Squirtle muster the courage to speak.
It turned out that during the food shortage on the island, Squirtle, along with Gyarados, Vaporeon, and other Water-type Pokémon, had gone out to search for food.
Although Squirtle was still in its base form, its level was no lower than Gyarados or the others. Due to its unnatural origin, Squirtle had lost the ability to evolve, but this didn't hinder its strength (other cloned Pokémon in base forms had the same issue as Squirtle).
This was different from ordinary Pokémon. For regular Pokémon, their strength often stagnates if they don't evolve after reaching a certain stage of growth.
If Squirtle weren't so strong, it wouldn't have been sent to search for food. The seas had become chaotic and dangerous due to recent battles.
Although Psyduck was also a Water-type Pokémon, it hadn't been assigned to the task because its strength was comparatively weaker.
This Psyduck was cloned from Misty's Psyduck. While it shared the same vacant demeanor as Misty's, it could swim, unlike its counterpart, which was a complete landlubber.
When Squirtle went out, it acted separately from Gyarados and the others. At one point, it came across an area where many Pokémon were gathering. Upon investigating, Squirtle discovered that numerous blue gemstones had been exposed on the seabed.
As Squirtle approached these blue gemstones, it felt a soothing, invigorating sensation throughout its body. However, its limited knowledge meant it had no idea what these blue gemstones were.
After hearing Squirtle's description, Yuga exclaimed in surprise, "Blue gemstones? Could they be Water Stones?"
"Squirtle! Squirtle!"
Squirtle shook its head emphatically, indicating that they weren't Water Stones. While it didn't recognize other items, it did know what Water Stones looked like.
"Not Water Stones?" Yuga fell into deep thought. Based on Squirtle's description, the only remaining possibility was Water Gems.
With this in mind, Yuga asked Squirtle, "Do you remember the location of that place? Can you take me to see it?"
"Squirtle~ Squirtle~"
Squirtle nodded enthusiastically.
After putting all the cloned Pokémon away, Yuga set off with Squirtle and Mewtwo.
This time, instead of riding Dragonite, Yuga traveled on Lapras, following behind Squirtle. Mewtwo also settled onto Lapras's back.
After about two hours, Squirtle pointed to the sea surface and indicated that they had arrived. According to Squirtle's earlier description, the location was at the bottom of the ocean beneath this area of water.
"How do I get down there?" Yuga asked Squirtle.
While Squirtle and Lapras could dive underwater without a problem, Yuga couldn't. Although he could swim, his skills were average at best, and he certainly didn't have the ability to dive to the ocean floor.
"Squirtle~ Squirtle~"
Squirtle shook its head, indicating that while it could dive by itself, it couldn't take someone with it.
At this moment, Mewtwo suddenly floated into the air, created a psychic shield around Yuga, and then dove straight into the water, startling Yuga.
Seeing this, Squirtle and Lapras quickly followed and plunged into the sea.
Once underwater, Yuga could initially see his surroundings, but as they dove deeper, the environment grew progressively darker. Left with no choice, he took a flashlight out of his backpack.
The place Squirtle had described was much deeper than Yuga had anticipated.
Thanks to the psychic shield, the flashlight worked just fine.
As Yuga looked around, he noticed several Chinchou and Lanturn emitting faint glows as they swam about. However, their light was too dim to illuminate the surroundings sufficiently.
As soon as Yuga turned on his flashlight, it startled several Pokémon hiding nearby, causing them to scatter quickly.
After another ten minutes or so, Yuga and the others finally reached the ocean floor. The flashlight's beam reflected off the gems, instantly lighting up the pitch-black seabed. The brightness startled countless Pokémon that had gathered there.
As Yuga had suspected, the gems Squirtle had seen were indeed Water Gems.
These Water Gems had been buried deep beneath the seabed, but the massive tsunami caused by Mewtwo's battle had altered the underwater environment, exposing this vein of Water Gems.
Based on what Yuga observed, this Water Gem vein seemed to be exceptionally abundant. The exposed section alone left him dazzled.
The presence of the Water Gem vein had attracted many Pokémon, which is why Yuga and the others were met with hostility as soon as they arrived. However, some of the Pokémon recognized Mewtwo and dared not act recklessly.
After contemplating for a long time, Yuga decided to report the existence of this vein to the League.
First, he lacked the ability to mine it. Second, the League strictly forbade private ownership of elemental gemstone veins.
Unlike Evolution Stones, elemental gems were considered strategic resources. Large-scale trading of them was illegal under League law, let alone private ownership or mining.
With this in mind, Yuga quietly left with Mewtwo and the others, returning to the surface. Since he had decided to report the vein to the League, the Water-type Pokémon gathered there could also be left for the League to handle.
These Pokémon had only gathered temporarily and didn't include any exceptionally strong individuals, so dealing with them wouldn't be too difficult.
Upon returning to the surface, Yuga immediately called Steven and informed him of his location.
As for how to explain why he was there, Yuga decided to claim he was providing humanitarian aid to wild Pokémon affected by the disaster.
Whether Steven believed it or not was none of Yuga's concern. After all, everyone had the right to personal freedom!
