After all, if one has the skills, there's no reason to hide them.
Besides, splitting logs is such a waste of time—Hikari's main reason for coming here was to hunt bulls.
However, upon hearing Hikari's words, Miyajima Sakura merely smiled and shook her head.
With an expression of knowing experience, Miyajima Sakura smiled and advised Hikari, "Hikari-kun, every new recruit tells me the same thing: they have a foundation and don't need to split wooden stakes."
"But you see, what they consider a foundation usually just means they know how to swing a sword and hit a wooden stake. That's hardly what we call a foundation."
"Kendo isn't that simple."
"Posture, force, angle… there are many important factors to consider. Kendo is easy to learn but hard to master."
Originally, Miyajima Sakura intended to convey this point with words alone, hoping Hikari would understand.
But even though Hikari maintained a polite listening expression, Miyajima Sakura could tell that he still hadn't changed his mind about skipping the wooden stake practice.
Feeling slightly helpless, Miyajima Sakura also noticed the impatience among the other newcomers.
After some thought, she suddenly clapped her hands and said loudly, "Everyone, look over here. Especially the new members, gather around me."
Hearing her call, the others, though puzzled, moved to the center of the field.
They then looked curiously at Miyajima Sakura and the Hikari standing beside her.
Once everyone had gathered, Miyajima Sakura smiled and said, "Today, we have many newcomers joining the club."
"It's normal for newbies to be a little impatient; we don't blame them for that."
"But to help you develop the right mindset and understand that just being able to swing a sword doesn't mean you have a kendo foundation, I plan to give you a demonstration."
Turning to Hikari, she asked, "Hikari-kun, you think you have a kendo foundation and don't want to start with the basics, correct?"
Hikari nodded. "Yes, President, I truly do have a foundation in kendo."
Although Hikari's explanation was sincere, Miyajima Sakura merely saw it as a case of pride or a lack of understanding of what a "foundation" truly meant in kendo.
Smiling after hearing his response, Miyajima Sakura said, "Alright then, I'll give you a chance."
"Let's have a sparring match. If you can convince me that you truly have a kendo foundation, I'll let you skip the wooden stake practice."
"I understand that splitting stakes might feel tedious, but it's an essential stage for most kendo practitioners."
"If you all doubt this, I'll spar with Hikari-kun to prove my point."
Hearing Miyajima Sakura's words, the kendo club members broke into lively discussion.
"Is the president going to demonstrate herself?"
"She's actually going to step in personally?"
"Awesome! President Miyajima Sakura looks so cool when she wields her sword. I joined the club after watching her competition videos."
Many expressed excitement at the rare chance to see Miyajima Sakura in action.
However, the vice-president, Kase Masafumi, shook his head. "Is this really necessary? Hikari is just a rookie. Couldn't she assign an experienced member to teach him?"
Masafumi didn't see through Miyajima Sakura's intent to humble the newcomers. To him, her personally guiding Hikari felt excessive, almost like she was giving him too much attention.
Frankly, he was a bit jealous. Having pursued Miyajima Sakura for a while without success, the sudden appearance of Hikari, with his striking good looks, made him feel threatened.
Meanwhile, Hikari noticed Miyajima Sakura gripping her wooden sword and looking at him expectantly.
He sighed and asked, "President Miyajima, are we really doing this? I swear I'm not lying about having a foundation."
Miyajima Sakura smiled. "Yes, we're really doing this. I believe you're not lying, but it's better to prove it through sparring."
"Sparring is a routine practice in the kendo club."
"This isn't a formal competition, so you don't need to win. You just have to show me enough to prove your foundation, and I'll be satisfied."
"To make things fair, I'll use my left hand instead of my dominant right hand. That way, you'll understand the gap between our skill levels without feeling overwhelmed."
Her last remark was directed at the other newcomers, clearly aiming to teach them a lesson.
Hikari realized he wasn't being targeted specifically. Instead, he was the unlucky "example" chosen to demonstrate her point.
Resigned, Hikari donned his protective gear, picked up a wooden sword, and stepped onto the practice stage, ready to spar with Miyajima Sakura.
Watching the two make their preparations, the crowd began enthusiastically discussing the scene.
Especially the newcomers.
They didn't care whether Miyajima Sakura was trying to dampen their enthusiasm or educate them.
To these newcomers and the members of the Kendo Club, they simply saw this as an exciting performance.
After all, most people had only seen Miyajima Sakura's sparring sessions on televised matches before.
To witness her moves firsthand was quite a novelty for many, especially the new members.
"By the way, who do you think will win this spar?"
"Haha, what kind of question is that? Of course, President Miyajima will win. The real question should be how long Hikari can last against her."
"Exactly. Even though President Miyajima is using her left hand, Hikari is probably a complete rookie, right? The skill gap is so wide, it's not something that can easily be bridged."
"We've had cocky newcomers before, challenging the president, but they all got instantly defeated."
"President Miyajima Sakura has been practicing Kendo since she was a child. Her skill level is among the best across all universities in the country. She's incredible!"
"Yeah, it feels like President Miyajima could take on our entire Kendo Club by herself."
"I bet Hikari will end up just like those hotheaded newcomers before, getting thoroughly crushed by the president. This could be a good thing, though—being humbled like this will make them easier to teach."
Clearly, almost no one believed Hikari could win.
Even in their speculation, they only wondered how long he could last—five seconds or ten seconds.
And with Miyajima Sakura's combination of beauty and heroic aura, this sparring session, despite not really being a competition, drew lots of cheers.
"Go, President Miyajima! Teach these newcomers a good lesson, haha!"
"President Miyajima, take it easy. Try not to defeat him in one move, or he might lose all confidence, haha!"
"Good luck, Senior Miyajima!"
Although many cheered for Miyajima Sakura, Hikari didn't go entirely unsupported.
Thanks to his looks, some of the female members of the club cheered him on.
"Hikari, you're so brave. Sparring with our strongest President Miyajima on your first day in the club."
"You're so handsome, Hikari, so your Kendo skills must not be bad either. Just lasting five seconds against the president is a success—I support you!"
"Even in defeat, there's glory. Being able to spar with the president right at the start is already impressive."
"Go, Hikari! At least last ten seconds, okay? A man can't give up so easily."
While Hikari received quite a few cheers due to his looks, what left him speechless was that even his supporters were hoping he wouldn't lose too miserably or too quickly.
Though slightly exasperated, Hikari wasn't surprised.
After all, from their perspective, as a newcomer, he was definitely leagues below Miyajima Sakura, the Kendo Club president.
At this moment, Hikari and Miyajima Sakura had already stepped onto the sparring platform and were standing face-to-face.
Seeing that Hikari was ready, Miyajima Sakura spoke up: "Hikari-kun, since you're new, I'll let you take the first move in this spar."
To Miyajima Sakura and the audience, this was only natural. After all, if Miyajima Sakura were to strike first and instantly defeat Hikari, it wouldn't serve as much of an educational experience.
So, by letting Hikari attack first, she planned to symbolically exchange a few moves before defeating him.
Hearing Miyajima Sakura's words, Hikari didn't hold back. He smiled and said, "Alright, then I'll go first."
Miyajima Sakura smiled slightly. "Go ahead."
Holding the wooden sword diagonally in front of his chest, Hikari's mind was flooded with the mastery of swordsmanship, flowing like a stream and spreading throughout his body.
It felt as though he had practiced countless times, the mastery of the sword ingrained into his muscle memory. Effortlessly, he felt a seamless connection between the sword and his body, as if it were an extension of his arm.
This state, which could only occasionally be achieved by those of profound skill, was something Hikari easily entered with his master-level swordsmanship.
"President Miyajima, be careful."
As his words fell, Hikari took a step forward, launching himself in a burst of speed and thrusting the wooden sword straight ahead.
In Miyajima Sakura's eyes, Hikari was just a newcomer to the Kendo Club.
Even if he had some basic skills, he couldn't possibly be that capable.
So, she planned to spar with him while explaining her moves to the audience, showing the gap between newcomers and veterans.
But just as Hikari's first strike came in, Miyajima Sakura smiled and said, "Hikari-kun's strike aims directly at my chest. The intent is far too obvious—this is a sign of inex—uh?"
Originally, she intended to commentate as they sparred, but the moment Hikari's wooden sword entered her three-foot range, she suddenly realized something was off.
Hikari's initial strike, which Miyajima Sakura had assumed was full of flaws, suddenly transformed mid-thrust, aiming for her throat instead. She hurriedly sidestepped to evade it, completely interrupting her planned commentary.
What followed left Miyajima Sakura even more shocked.
If the earlier bizarre feint could still be dismissed as a fluke, the subsequent flurry of attacks from Hikari were deadly.
Every strike was delivered with incredible speed, and the angles were unusually precise and cunning.
Not only were his attacks methodical, but the force behind them was perfectly controlled. Moreover, he seemed to be holding back slightly, displaying an air of effortless mastery.
Under Hikari's ferocious assault, Miyajima Sakura was suddenly forced entirely onto the defensive, unable to counterattack. It appeared as though she was in constant danger of losing at any moment.
This scene left the Kendo Club members in the audience utterly stunned.
Both newcomers and veterans alike were dumbfounded.
"What's going on? Hikari is pressuring the president?"
"Is President Miyajima holding back on purpose? How could she be forced into a corner by a rookie?"
"Hikari-kun's strikes… they don't look like those of a beginner."
The spectators were all frozen in disbelief. Almost everyone had assumed Hikari would be instantly defeated by Miyajima Sakura. Yet, as the match unfolded, they realized that Hikari was the one overwhelming their president.
As for Miyajima Sakura on the platform, the pressure she felt was far greater than what the audience could imagine.
Hikari's relentless attacks were terrifyingly intense. She had nearly been taken out by his very first strike.
His subsequent follow-up strikes, too, left her in one close call after another.
Fortunately, her extensive experience and advanced Kendo skills allowed her to barely hold her ground.
However, as Hikari's strikes kept coming, faster and sharper with each move, Miyajima Sakura slowly came to a realization: Hikari wasn't merely someone with a foundation in Kendo. He possessed an incredibly high level of mastery.
