Chapter 184 - Igniting the Flames
When is the best time to eat the most delicious food?
It might be a profound and philosophical subject that could fuel a debate for an entire night, but I believed it should be eaten first. When you’re hungry and your taste buds are fully alert, you can savor the flavors to the fullest. Isn’t it proper etiquette to experience the best food in its finest state?
Of course, this principle shouldn’t be applied to other realms. Still, to some extent, it holds true… you know the saying, “Well begun is half done.”
If the beginning is shockingly interesting, you naturally become more engaged with what follows. In that sense… it seemed like this choice was quite good.
– “ㅇㅇ has donated 1,000 won!” –
【What the heck is this】
The nonsensical exclamations of donations were piling up. The situation in the chat window glanced briefly didn’t look much different. The reactions were nothing short of explosive. Questions like “Where can I see this build?” were popping up every ten seconds.
……it reminded me a bit of the times when I was a rogue. No matter what.
However, there was no need to feel unjust. It was likely due to the build’s impact rather than the character’s features. More than precise skills, it’s the raw power that shatters walls that tends to catch the eye.
After all, wasn’t that why I chose this build as the starting point for the series? Complaining would be illogical.
HRHK(Holy Rage Holy Knight). Holy Knight. It was a build created by an old friend who had an unusual love for pointless research. He spent more time in custom games and discussions than in ranked games.
After toiling away for three days and nights without playing a single match, only messing around in custom games, he suddenly said, “I show you a fucking good show.”
I wondered what he was up to this time, teasing him about trying to return to Diamond rank with some strange antics. Little did I know he would put on such an amazing show.
As the first audience member who watched this from the front row, I could vouch for it. There was no build more visually impactful than this. At least, not for a Holy Knight.
Even the developers of KoK, who were so idle that their very existence was questioned back then, were forced to rush out an emergency patch… Perhaps it left a significant impression on them, too.
.
.
.
In front of the corner, at the center of the L-shaped alley where thin walls were placed consecutively, I sensed the slight fluctuation of the health bar… This must be the place.
I took light, slow steps on the spot. There was no need to hurry. It was a build optimized for hunting, not combat. Just bait the prey and pounce.
While transmitting the sound of a calm walk beyond the wall, I twisted my body and gathered strength.
Then, I swung the greatsword with all my might. As I moved my hands swiftly to maintain balance, the gigantic sword traced a semi-circle that disappeared from view. It was a blow designed to collide with the wall at its maximum impact point.
– BOOM!
Pieces of rock scattered everywhere. Just as I thought I missed, I noticed a glimmer of red among the rubble spreading outwards from the lower right part of the wall.
As expected, this was the spot. Walls might obscure vision, but they can’t block the colossal sword. Learning seems to be slow.
“The opponent lacks boldness. You should try more daring charges. The colossal sword is weak against charges.”
『No way』
『If this wasn’t a broadcast, they would definitely accuse you of using an ESP hack』
『Is this sound play?』
『How do you even do that?』
『Isn’t this a bug or what?』
『They’re swinging a utility pole and charging through everything.』
A bug… a bug, indeed. Thinking about it objectively, it was a build that teetered between being a bug and a skill. I didn’t think it was a bug per se… but it was a bit unorthodox, to put it mildly.
Even the developers had acknowledged it.
In essence, it utilized an “unintended glitch” associated with sturdy physical builds. Instead of the absolute defensive value of allies, it took into account the relative defense compared to surrounding enemies to increase health, contrary to what the tooltip suggested.
So, regardless of how low the team’s total defense was, if the surrounding enemies were priests or mages, the health buff was negligible. Conversely, if knights or warriors charged in to protect our priests and mages, the health would significantly increase.
Calling it a bug might be a bit misleading; it was clearly a mechanism designed to prevent knights from causing havoc in the enemy’s backline. It was intended for them to protect the front lines while armored.
However, it had been overlooked that if you discarded your armor and charged alone, reducing ally defense to 1, even encountering a rogue would cause a huge spike in health due to the relative defense disparity.
Timing the health increase well also allowed one to detect stealthy rogues.
Initially, everyone knew about it in secret, but it didn’t matter much. The maximum health increased but not the current health.
Unless it was for some entertainment video shoot, there was no reason for a Holy Knight to discard all their armor. The penalties wouldn’t be justified by a slight increase in other stats.
The side effect of detecting stealthy rogues was easily countered by having a mage cast detection spells. Stealth was inherently a flawed skill that urgently needed a buff.
So, initially, there was no problem.
Had there not been a madman who meticulously experimented by combining dozens of traits to bring this exploit to light, it might have remained unproblematic.
The madman discarded all armor, reaching the maximum allowed weight with the “Vow and Constraints” skill, wielded an insanely large greatsword, and combined this with the “Last Stand” ability, which temporarily increased attack power proportional to lost health. He scoured every possible trait to amplify this build and ran around demolishing everything in sight.
According to a former developer’s lament on R*ddit, they’d tried increasing map object durability to counter this, only for unexpected bugs to arise on the guardian side. No one knew exactly what was triggering these issues, and the team had shouted in frustration three times a day, “Why on earth is this happening to us?”
This frustration was quite telling.
The build surfaced around mid-season 5, when KoK was slowly declining. By then, the original developer who wrote the messy spaghetti code had likely left the company.
So, there was little Faraday could do.
They hurriedly began nerfing various traits and tried to limit the size of greatswords, only to face backlash from Western players enamored with knightly fantasies, forcing a retraction. They added more nerfs and later sneakily changed walls to non-interactive objects.
But even that would take a while, at least several weeks. Hopefully, it would be resolved before season 2 began.
Until then, this build would dominate.
Mercilessly.
-BOOM!
『YoMAMA(Holy Knight) has been slain!』
『GetDevoured(Holy Knight) → YoMAMA(Holy Knight)』
『(All) YoMAMA(Holy Knight): wtf』
『(All) YoMAMA(Holy Knight): you’ve gotta be @$*!ing kidding me』
『(All) YoMAMA(Holy Knight): $@&ing @(!$ full of $*(!』
The benefits of a filter. You could recognize profound compliments even without understanding English.
“They seem quite impressed. Maybe they’ll want to try it out in the next round. Should I lend them a hand?”
『(All) GetDevoured(Holy Knight): Build at (link) for all to try』
As I promoted the build in chat with the message prepared for every kill – “If you want to try this build, refer to the link” – a torrent of praise followed. Perhaps, the true universal language wasn’t love, but gaming.
Great.
“Today… should I aim to reach Diamond 1, at least?”
『DQN(Rogue) has been slain!』
『GetDevoured(Holy Knight) → DQN(Rogue)』
『(All) GetDevoured(Holy Knight): Build at (link) for all to try』
『(All) DQN(Rogue): mf a$$hole』
The advertisement effect seemed pretty good. Hmm.

Why is the wall breaking? Damn it
Why is she blatantly using a bug on the broadcast, crazy woman』
– Her husband was dismembered, it’s understandable she’d go crazy…
– ㄴ What does a rogue mean to her, really?
– But she’s been dismembering all day, damn it
– ㄴ She’s just sending them off comfortably before they get killed by others, lol
– But it does look fun as hell
– ㄴ For real
– ㄴ The thrill is no joke. I tried it immediately, and damn, I couldn’t help but moan. This is what KoK and VR greatswords are about.
– ㄴ Realistically, wouldn’t you just die from a stray arrow in one minute?
– ㄴ Sex ends quickly anyway
– ㄴ Oh..

– Being in a state where you die if touched, swinging a massive greatsword, destroying everything? Let’s do it right now, damn it!
– What the hell, does this guy even browse R*ddit? Why is his English so good? Isn’t he just some jobless loser who’s obsessed with watching GetDevoured 24/7? This feels incredibly off, seriously.
– ㄴ Oh my god…
– ㄴ Yeah, he’s definitely a jobless loser obsessed with GetDevoured 24/7. Why don’t you just use a translation tool instead of just browsing communities like KoK Forum, naChan, amaGal, and WeTogether? Why don’t you monitor all the communities where Teacher appears?
– ㄴㄴ You’re really an embarrassment wherever you go.

– What’s the background music? Never heard it before.
– Damn, was there ever such a build? I’m quitting my job starting tomorrow to play KoK full-time.
