Chapter 5: Strong Child
After the incident at 5 name days, Olivia had finally realized her place in this family and started to give up on her dreams of a happy family. The previous cheerful little girl became silent and would sometimes jump at the slightest sounds.
This pleased Lady Caitlyn to no end while Ned Stark seemed to have not seen anything particular. This made her realize that even though she had the blood of the Starks much like her name, she is not a Stark and even her father agrees with this sentiment.
Seeing everyone in the family as an enemy from then on, the face that used to smile turned expressionless. She only spoke to the Starks when she was spoken to but she didn't take the unfair treatment lying down anymore. She started fighting back.
She decided that she will not be a punching bag to this bitter old witch anymore. She started talking and glaring back at Caitlyn whenever she is provoked.
Olivia had been isolated before but after that time she was being avoided by the staff and even the old kind Maester made sure to avoid her in front of others. No one in this cold castle cared for her not even that stoic father of hers.
She remembers how brutal the beatings get whenever Caitlyn heard someone comments about her looking like Lynna Stark everyday.
Thinking up to here, she decided to speed up the process of finding herbs that will produce medicine to make herself stronger so she can leave this dreadful place. Even the young Sansa has learnt to scorn and berate her.
Which breaks her heart because she used to visit her and play with her when she was in the crib. However, Olivia knows who is responsible for this, the teachings and gospels of the old witch.
Robert is a good kid but there is a natural distance between them as a boy and a girl. Coupled with her hate for his mother and his mother's hate for her that space has only grown over the years.
Olivia knows now that staying in this place will result in her death. As a result the bone marrow washing potion Olivia made quickly finished as the two weeks passed by after her meeting with her father. All these days she drank it twice a day and then took good rest.
Her body grew stronger and healthier. She felt like she could bring down a wild boar with the might of her punch. The previous bone marrow pill didn't work this well even though it was made from spirit herbs.
It must be the power of precise formula measurements. It turned normal medicine into heaven defying medicine that even masters would fight for. The value of her soul companion proved to be tremendous to Olivia and she can not wait to explore the North's entire resources.
Today was the last day of drinking her potion. After eating her supper she started practicing a set of boxing techniques that will continue to train her core strength.
Ned Stark hasn't come to see her in a while which is fine, he only comes when there is a problem anyways. She practiced her boxing movements and took a soothing bath. The girls are used to being chased away from her room for no apparent reason when she is making her potions or doing her exercises.
A month later she is now as strong as 6 men put together. Her movements are swift because of her added agility. Her body is gradually growing into a weapon even as she is till very short.
It took several days to adjust to her new strength. The boxing movements technique helped her get used to her growing physical strength. This allowed her plant powers to improve at a rapid pace. She is soon able to purify wood, making it smoother with less blemishes.
She secretly made work out equipment from wood like dumbbells and other weights she uses in her workout. The girls will find her things but didn't ask her anything about it.
If another incident happens she would be able to punch her way out. Today she entered her room after going out to look for mental power boosting plants only to find Caitlyn standing in her room. So of course she took out her weapon and stood alert.
But then she saw Ned coming out of the back of the door. When he saw her pointing a knife at his wife he realized this girl doesn't feel safe in her own home. His gloomy eyes stayed in the hand holding the knife but Olivia didn't put it down.
He tried to take it from her but her hand is fast and she opened her eyes wide. "Have you two finally come to kill me? Remove the stain of Winterfell from the world?" She asked her father who seemed hurt by her words.
"We have only come to talk. No one is getting killed." He spoke softly. Olivia heard him but the stance of her body surprised him. She stood tensed as if a coiling dragon.
"Ned, don't you see the kind of person she is? She clearly wants me dead." Caitlyn jumped into her husband's arms pretending to be pitiful. If possible she didn't want to lower herself and apologize to the child born of sin.
"Olivia sit down." Ned cuddled his wife and gave Olivia a warning look.
"Don't disgust me woman. If I wanted to watch a play I would go south." Olivia became disgusted with their show of affection.
"I have come to tell you that you will be going as a Ward." Ned spoke to Olivia who is so surprised she dropped the knife in her hand.
"No fricki'n way!" Olivia objected immediately.
"Olivia!" Ned released his wife and stood in front of Olivia like a descending mountain. "This was not a request."
"Let me tell you what's going to happen Ned Stark, you are going to leave me alone until I am good and ready to leave this place by myself. If you attempt to send me off somewhere I will make your life a living hell. You have best believe it because I can do it." She punched the wall and a large crack appeared on the old stone.
Breathing heavily because of anger, she tried to calm herself down. The two people are stunned seeing her bleeding hand and the crack on the wall. Caitlyn is more frightened while Ned is curious about this sudden burst of strength.
A while back she was three inches shorter and her posture was several times lower. Now she seems to be a sleeping bear ready to tier her enemies apart. Her eyes that are usually calm and expressionless now show a bit of ferocity.
"W..what happened to you?" Caitlyn asked stuttering. Olivia gave a dark laugh seeing her tormentor scared of her.
"Take a good look Caitlyn Tully, this is the monster you have created. On the account that you are his wife and because he let you abuse me all that time I will not touch you. But for the love of all that is just, I advice you to not plot anything against me. The tolerance bar is now full and can not accommodate anymore." She reiterated every word.
"I had to get strong if I am to leave here now don't I? Just do what you have been doing the past month and pretend I don't exist. I promise that I will be out of your hair in no time at all. I just need a little bit of time and you won't have to see me ever again." Olivia said with a serious detached tone.
"Is that what you think was happening? We were pretending you don't exist and we wish to never see you again?" Ned rubbed his eyebrows in what seems to be exhaustion.
"It matters very little what you think or feel or your intentions. What is clear is your actions. I am not asking for too much I just want one week and you won't have to make an excuse about me being a ward, I will leave myself." She pleaded but her eyes are firmly looking at Ned Stark.
"I am not getting rid of you. It is only temporary..." He is cut off by Olivia's ridiculing laughter.
"Let me guess, you think I will grow and then my temper will get better? You are wrong, I am not temperamental what I am is tired of the two of you. One abuses me while the other ignores me." She spoke coolly which scared Caitlyn and surprised Ned even further.
"In fact I know what you are doing. You are sending me away and then you will marry me to some low born just to keep me a peasant and in check?" She tilted her head.
"That is not what is happening. I thought that you might need a change of scenery after everything." Ned frowned.
"What I need is for the two of you to leave me alone. You have seen what I can do, I am more than capable of taking care of myself."
"All that time you made sure I never received any useful education, I have been studying Maester Luwin's medical books. I am now very talented in medicine. Wherever I end up I will be able to take care of myself."
She has taken care of her body and for the time being she can take care of herself if she went out but she still needs a safe environment to improve her plants power. After she is ready, she will move into the forest where plants will surround her all the time.
Ned looked at her and saw resolve in her eyes the kind that can not be shaken. "Are you determined to leave here on your own?" He can not allow the girl to leave when he had promised to protect her.
"Because I know what awaits me in this house where my father doesn't care and his wife will do everything in her power to ensure I end up miserable. I am taking the initiative." She said calmly.
"A child is to be under the care of the adults until she comes of age. What you are doing is against the teaching of the seven." Caitlyn found her courage and countered.
Olivia only chuckles with mockery. "I'm sorry, is that the same gods who asked you to be vicious to an innocent child while you love and cuddle the one who really committed sin against his marriage vow to you?" She asked in amusement looking at her as if she is mad.
"How dare you?!" Caitlyn shouted in outrage.
"You have no idea just how audacious I can be." Olivia grinned at her.
"Enough!" Ned felt like he is getting a headache.
"Is there a way that we can find a peaceful solution here?" Ned asked her. This time he has calmed down feeling like if he let this continue on he will be a sinner in front of his sister's legacy.
"What is a favorable outcome for you Lord Stark?" Olivia asked him curious.
"You don't run away from home." He said.
"Don't run? So that you can pass me over to some other family to be ridiculed by strangers? I'll let you in on a secret dear Lord Stark. I can barely contain myself from sneaking into your bedroom when you leave for work to slice open your pretty wife's throat." She saw a wooden log which was going to be used for the fire fly towards her face but thanks to her new agility she lightly lifted her hand and caught it firmly.
She didn't even seem fazed by the power behind the throw. She continued speaking calmly.
"I hold back because I can't wait to see the weaklings she will raise as the young lords and ladies of Winterfell. I will watch as your enemies tier them from limb to limb while they pray to the gods who teaches them hate and cruelty. I am honestly very excited." Olivia said.
"But if another person ridicules me I will paint that location with their innards. I am not even joking that will happen so if you are not looking to behead me yourself, abandon the idea of me being a Ward to any family unless you hate them. In which case things will work out for you." She threw the log back on the pile of logs and it landed perfectly on top.
"That sounds too vivid." Ned looked at Olivia seeing more and more of his sister in her. This terrified him.
"So what is your option that doesn't involve you leaving home?" Ned asked but his wife seemed to want to reject this thought. Olivia kept silent. She thought long and hard about what she wants.
"I want to move to the tower. I will take care of the renovations myself so don't worry about the costs. I want it to belong to me. I don't want your wife to ever appear in my home which is that tower. Are we in agreement?" Her tone firm.
"I am the LADY of Winterfell, do you dare tell me where I can and can not go?...Ned.." Caitlyn wanted to object but Ned Stark gave her a look and she kept silent.
"Are you sure about this?" He looked to Olivia who nodded immediately.
"I am sure. I don't want to be disturbed in my tower." She said with a glare towards Caitlyn.
"I will need to know that you are still alive so come and see me in the office every Tuesday." He doesn't want to miss something because she lives far away from him. He has already neglected her enough.
"Once a month is fine." She dismissed his earlier request and continued speaking. "The land around the tower will also be used by me." She added.
"That is a stone field." He seems surprised by her statement.
"Stones I will need to repair the tower and land I will use to grow a herb garden." She informed.
This feels like a peaceful conversation. "Alright. You can move in when the tower is repaired completely." He really wants to know how a 10 name days is going to find coins to build a tower.
"For the time being may I please have absolute rights to this servant room? I would like for the people especially your wife to not pay any visits to me from now on." She added. Caitlyn had a sour expression on her face.
This dammed brat dares to tell her which room to enter inside her own castle. Ned felt conflicted but remembering it was his wife who caused the child be be so distant and cold, he agreed.
They soon left her alone.
