Chapter 35: Fox Essence
Yumiko, gripping the Crimson Sword, stood defiant in the swirling fog of the void. The beast's voice snarled, echoing through the endless abyss. "You think you can take this power without a price? It'll destroy you before it obeys!"
Yumiko's knuckles whitened around the sword hilt, her breathing ragged but resolute. "Maybe it will," she muttered, "but if it means stopping you, I'll take that chance."
With a fierce cry, she plunged the blade into the ground. A shockwave of light and energy erupted, ripping through the mindscape. The oppressive fog hissed and screamed as it disintegrated, but Yumiko staggered under the force, clutching her chest. Crimson cracks spread across her skin, searing like molten fire, and her legs buckled beneath her.
The transformation was not smooth; it was brutal. Her body felt as though it was being torn apart and rebuilt all at once. Her own willpower clashed violently with the beast's energy, the overwhelming pressure threatening to crush her entirely.
The Crimson Beast in the physical world convulsed wildly, emitting guttural roars that shook the icy terrain. Its claws raked across the ground, carving deep trenches as bursts of chaotic energy erupted from its body. The monster thrashed in desperation, sending shockwaves through the collapsing crevice.
Nathaniel barely kept his footing as the ground trembled beneath him. "What the hell is happening now?" he muttered, watching the beast's erratic movements. Crimson energy spiraled upward, a chaotic storm of destruction.
The beast's roar turned into something more human—anguished and defiant—as cracks of light spread across its grotesque form. It spasmed violently before a massive explosion of energy engulfed the entire area.
When the blinding light faded, Yumiko stood in place of the monster, but her transformation was far from triumphant. She was no longer the Crimson Beast, but the toll was evident. Her new form radiated an otherworldly power: her body glowed with faint, flickering patterns of azure and silver energy, and nine fiery, translucent tails swayed weakly behind her.
Her new sword—sleek, curved, and glowing with both destruction and refinement—was clutched tightly in her trembling hand. But her posture was hunched, her legs barely holding her upright.
Blood trickled from her lips, and she clutched her side as pain wracked her body. Every breath felt like fire in her lungs, her limbs heavy as though weighed down by the immense energy coursing through her.
Nathaniel's jaw clenched as he took in the sight of Yumiko's transformed figure. Her new power was undeniable, but it was clear she was fighting to stay on her feet. Her face was pale, her movements slow, and her breathing labored.
"Yumiko…" he called out, cautiously stepping forward. "Are you… okay?"
Her piercing blue eyes, flickering with traces of crimson fire, snapped toward him. She nodded faintly, though her body betrayed her exhaustion. "I'm… fine," she said, though her voice was strained, a lie told more to herself than to him.
As if on cue, her legs buckled slightly, and she had to use the new sword as a crutch to steady herself. The fiery tails behind her dimmed, their once-majestic glow flickering weakly.
"Well, well…" Yipsiv drawled, spinning his revolver idly as he observed her with keen interest. "Ain't that somethin'? You pulled out the big guns, but it looks like they're weighin' you down. Hell of a show, darlin', but I reckon you're burnin' the candle at both ends."
Yumiko gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stand tall despite the pain lancing through her body. "This… isn't over," she hissed, her voice sharp but tinged with exhaustion.
Yipsiv tipped his hat, his grin widening. "That so? Hate to break it to ya, sugar, but you look like you're two steps from hittin' the ground."
Her energy tails flared weakly behind her, a flicker of defiance in her battered form. She raised the evolved sword, pointing it at Yipsiv with trembling hands. "I'll… finish this," she said, her determination unwavering even as her body screamed in protest
Nathaniel stepped beside her, his pistol raised as he scanned the area for threats. "You shouldn't push yourself," he said, his tone uncharacteristically serious. "If you go down now, you might not get back up."
Yumiko gave him a sidelong glance, the corner of her mouth twitching into the faintest smirk of acknowledgment. "Then we finish this quickly," she replied, though her grip on the sword tightened to keep herself from falling.
Her body might have been on the verge of collapse, but her spirit burned brighter than ever. Even weakened and in pain, she was a force to be reckoned with—and she wasn't about to back down.
Suddenly, Yumiko collapsed on the first step, her energy completely spent. Her body crumpled in Nathaniel's arms, her breath shallow and cold. He barely caught her, his grip tightening as he tried to steady her.
"Well, well," Yipsiv drawled in his signature cowboy accent, a wide grin curling at the corners of his mouth, "looks like ol' Crimson lost the gamble, and it seems our girl Yumiko's luck pulled through. But I reckon it's time for me to mosey on outta here. This dance is over." With a mocking salute, he faded into the mist like a phantom, leaving Nathaniel and Yumiko behind in the collapsing crevice, the factory around them beginning to fall apart.
Nathaniel, holding Yumiko close, scanned their surroundings urgently. "We need to get out of here," he muttered under his breath, eyes darting for a way out. The walls were crumbling, and even if he found an escape, Yumiko was in no condition to move fast. He gritted his teeth and looked down at her, whispering, "Come on, think. You've gotta figure something out."
The factory rumbled, its walls groaning under the stress of collapsing beams. Dust and debris filled the air, the ground shaking violently as if the entire structure was about to cave in on them. Nathaniel's mind raced, the seconds ticking by like hours. They had no time. The crumbling crevice was no longer a trap—they were in the middle of a death sentence.
"We need to hurry," Nathaniel grunted, scanning the area as his heart raced. There had to be a way out, but everything seemed to be falling apart around them.
Yumiko, still kneeling, her strength nearly depleted from the brutal transformation, struggled to push herself upright. Her breathing was labored, her energy spent, and yet, her eyes were still filled with determination. Nathaniel could see it in her—she wasn't done yet.
"Hold on," Nathaniel muttered, moving toward her. He helped her to her feet, steadying her as the building trembled around them. Her body was cold, her movements sluggish, but her grip on his shoulder was firm.
"Can't stop now," she murmured weakly. "Get us out."
Nathaniel nodded, his sharp gaze flicking around. He saw it—the weak point in the wall, a section of it sagging under the weight of the building's collapse. A maintenance hatch. A chance.
"Over there!" Nathaniel motioned toward the hatch, hoping against hope it was still intact. The factory trembled again, a groaning noise echoing from above. They had seconds, maybe a minute at best.
With Yumiko's arm draped over his shoulder, he moved quickly, half-carrying, half-supporting her. The floor cracked beneath their feet as they made their way toward the hatch. But as they neared it, the ground beneath them cracked wide open, sending a shockwave of debris flying toward them.
"Shit!" Nathaniel cursed, pulling Yumiko out of the way just in time, his heart pounding in his chest. The ceiling above them threatened to collapse at any moment.
"It's too risky," Yumiko whispered, her strength faltering.
"We don't have a choice," Nathaniel snapped, determination in his voice. "You stay with me. We get out, or we die trying."
He pushed forward, shoving aside a few jagged pieces of debris with his foot. The hatch was within reach now, and Nathaniel was ready to do whatever it took. As he reached for it, the hatch door slid open with a metallic screech.
Behind them, the factory groaned louder, a deafening roar of structural failure echoing through the space. They didn't have much time.
"Get in," Nathaniel urged, supporting Yumiko as she staggered toward the hatch. The sounds of destruction were growing louder, the ground shaking more violently now. With a final push, he helped her through the hatch, pulling her into the small maintenance tunnel below.
They both slid through, Nathaniel just behind her, as the opening sealed shut with a loud clang. The air inside was musty, stale, and pitch black, but it was safer than the hell they'd left behind.
Breathing heavily, Nathaniel leaned against the cold walls of the tunnel, his heart still racing. He turned to Yumiko, her body trembling from exhaustion, but her eyes still holding a glimmer of strength.
"Think we're safe?" Yumiko asked, her voice weak.
Nathaniel looked around the dark passageway, then back at her. "Not yet," he replied, the weight of the situation still pressing on him. "But we're alive. And that's what counts."
They shared a brief moment of silence, the tremors of the collapsing factory still reverberating through the tunnel walls. Nathaniel knew they couldn't stay there long, but for the first time in what felt like forever, he allowed himself to breathe, if only for a second.
"We need to keep moving," he said, his voice low but determined. He offered a hand to Yumiko, who took it gratefully, her grip weak but steady.
They weren't out of danger yet, but they had survived. And for now, that was eenough.
