Legacy's Wake

Chapter 72: The Golden Invitation

In the heart of the casino's grand game room, Temoshí, Nathaniel, and Tarot stood at attention, eyes fixed on Aurelio, who had drawn their focus with his captivating voice. The air was thick with anticipation, every word from Aurelio's lips pulling them deeper into his web.

"Ah, welcome, my esteemed guests!" Aurelio's voice echoed, smooth as silk and laced with a hint of menace. "Tonight, you are more than mere spectators. You are players in a game where fate and fortune dance on a razor's edge. This isn't just a show—it's an event that will make legends out of the lucky and ruin the reckless. Those of you holding the coveted golden tickets, you are the chosen ones, the elite. You've been invited into a world where every spin, every bet, and every heartbeat could change your life forever."

The room buzzed with energy, eyes wide and glistening as they watched the three of them. A hush fell over the crowd as Aurelio's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, a smile teasing the corners of his lips.

"Now, my friends, the question is: Do you have what it takes to test the limits of your destiny? Will you emerge victorious, or will you be swept away by the tide of chance? Tonight, we find out. And remember—here, the house always wins… but only if you let it."

Temoshí, Nathaniel, and Tarot glanced at each other, their golden tickets glinting in the room's dim light. No other gamblers in sight had one. It was as if Aurelio had been waiting for this moment, preparing for their arrival.

"Only us. We're the only ones with these tickets," Tarot said, his voice low and edged with unease. "He chose us for a reason. But how does he know who we are?"

Temoshí's jaw tightened, eyes narrowing as the gears in his mind turned. "That's what we need to find out. But one thing's for sure—this isn't going to be a simple game." His voice hardened, filled with a resolve that cut through the tension. "We came here to take this place down, and that's exactly what we'll do."

Temoshí remained stoic, unfazed by the curious faces now fixed on him. His gaze shifted toward the farthest corner of the game room, where a door stood half-hidden in shadow.

"So, this is Aurelio's casino…" he muttered, his voice low but steady. His eyes wandered briefly to the lavishly decorated quarry nearby, filled with vibrant, living fish swimming lazily under the glow of golden lights. The opulence only heightened the tension in the air. "I need to know what kind of game he wants us to play. And those doorkeepers—the ones who gave us the golden tickets—they've got to be in on this too," he added, watching as Echo and Hush entertained nearby guests with their unnerving mimicry.

Nathaniel leaned in close, his voice barely a whisper. "Captain…" The word cut through the charged atmosphere, drawing Temoshí's full attention. "This feels too dangerous to keep going. Maybe we should look for another way."

Temoshí's response was swift and decisive. "Not a chance." Without hesitation, he raised his arm, his bold gesture demanding the attention of everyone in the room. The chatter and clinking of glasses hushed as all eyes turned to him.

"Yo, Aurelio, right?" Temoshí's voice rang out, strong and defiant, cutting through the tense silence. "I think you already know who we are!" The sudden outburst caught the crowd off guard, their murmurs of surprise rippling like waves.

"I don't know where you're hiding or what kind of twisted game you're planning," Temoshí continued, his tone sharp and unwavering. "But let me make one thing clear. Even if we have to play along with your 'games,' know this—once we're done, I'll find you myself. And when I do, I'm taking you out. You hear me? Now stop hiding and tell us what this damn 'show' of yours is all about!"

The room held its breath, the tension thick enough to cut. Somewhere above, Aurelio was surely listening—and, judging by Temoshí's bold challenge, the stakes had just risen.

Aurelio's voice crackled over the speakers, his giggles dripping with amusement as he responded to Temoshí's bold declaration. "Oh, I knew you'd be the type of pirate who thrives on risky battles. Always looking for the edge, aren't you?" he teased, his tone equal parts playful and menacing. "Well then, I think what I have in store for you will suit you perfectly. Three games. Three dangerous rooks. Only after you've cleared them will I grace you with my presence."

The crowd murmured, shuffling uneasily as they began to move out of the way, creating an open path through the game room. The tension grew palpable as Aurelio's voice resumed, smooth and commanding.

"You received those golden tickets from my delightful doorkeepers as an exclusive invitation. The private game rooms you're about to enter? They're something no one else has ever had the chance to see, let alone walk into. So, congratulations," he said, his mock applause almost audible in his tone. "But don't celebrate too soon. If you truly wish to test your luck—and perhaps your survival—approach my dear Dua Veyra at the door. They'll escort you to the first room."

The speakers went silent, leaving an eerie stillness in the air as the crowd's attention shifted entirely to Temoshí and his crew. All eyes were on them now, waiting to see if they would rise to the challenge or hesitate in the face of Aurelio's taunting.

Temoshí glanced at Nathaniel and Tarot, his expression hardening with determination. "Well, he's also a freak," he said, his voice calm but firm. "Let's meet these 'lovely' doorkeepers and see just how far Aurelio's luck can carry him."

The three strode confidently down the carpet and ascended the grand staircase leading to the massive door guarded by Hush and Echo. The duo stood motionless at first, their unsettling masks concealing any trace of emotion. Their presence alone was enough to make the air feel heavier, as though the very room was holding its breath.

Without speaking a word, Hush and Echo suddenly sprang to life. They moved in perfect unison, their gestures fluid and theatrical. Hush mimicked the act of spinning a roulette wheel, his hands moving in exaggerated circles, while Echo pretended to shuffle and deal invisible playing cards with practiced flair. They exchanged silent glances as if coordinating their next move telepathically.

Then, with an eerie grace, they bowed deeply, their arms sweeping out to either side in perfect synchronization. Hush gestured toward the door with a grand flourish, as if unveiling a prize, while Echo pantomimed turning a key and pushing an invisible door open. The choreography ended with both of them pointing at the trio, their masked faces tilted as if to say, Your turn to play.

The silence that followed was deafening, yet the message was unmistakable. The three exchanged uneasy glances before stepping forward, the door slowly creaking open as if it had been waiting for them.
