Chapter 76: Balloon Chaos — Act 01
The moment the screen flickered again, the atmosphere in the casino shifted. The audience outside could feel the tension building as the pirates, now back in the central chamber, looked up at the new challenge ahead: balloons.
Aurelio's voice echoed through the room, his tone full of mischief. "Well done, my dear contestants. You've survived the Rabbit Run, but now it's time for something a little more... explosive. Welcome to the Balloon Maze!"
With a flourish, the walls of the room seemed to dissolve, revealing a vast, floating labyrinth of colorful balloons suspended in mid-air. The balloons were of all sizes—some large, some small, but all in impossible hues that shimmered like stars. But as the pirates stepped forward, their eyes widened as they realized that not only was the maze itself floating in midair, but it also seemed to shift every few seconds. It was as if the course were designed to confuse and challenge them at every turn.
And the balloons? They weren't just your average party decorations.
"Grab the balloons to get the key!" Aurelio's voice boomed. "But be careful... some of these balloons might pop... and you might not like what's inside. Ready? Go!"
In one corner of the room, Tarot's eyes darted around, confused. The balloons above him seemed to float in mid-air, but as he reached for a few, they quickly changed positions. "Wait a minute..." he muttered, his fingers brushing a balloon that suddenly burst, sending a blast of confetti that nearly knocked him off his feet. "What the—?"
The balloon maze was an absolute disaster. Balloons of every shape and size floated dangerously, drifting across the room like ticking time bombs. Some emitted harmless puffs of air, others were ready to explode into toxic clouds or crackle with electricity if disturbed. The pirates tried to catch them, but they quickly realized that nothing was going according to plan.
Temoshí reached for a balloon, but it shot up into the air with a whoosh, vanishing right before his fingers could touch it. He blinked, confused. "What the—?!" He lunged again, this time catching another balloon, but it promptly exploded into a burst of sparks, sending a shock through his body. "Ahh! Damn it!" he yelled, his clothes smoking like a charred hot dog.
Tarot, on the other hand, swung his staff in a big circle, knocking a balloon into the air. "Ha! Gotcha—!" The moment he said that, another balloon popped up in its place, bouncing around like it was mocking him. Tarot jumped back just as it exploded, releasing a cloud of gas that sent him coughing and waving his arms in the air. "Gah! This is ridiculous!" he shouted, now looking more like a balloon animal than a pirate.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel, trying to sneak in with his usual coolness, reached for a balloon that looked a bit too easy. Just as he touched it, the balloon zipped away like a rocket, disappearing out of sight. His jaw dropped. "Seriously?! Where did it go?!" He squinted into the maze, looking like he'd just lost his last game of poker. "It's like playing whack-a-mole with no mallet!"
Temoshí narrowed his eyes, clearly on edge. "Why are all these things moving around?!"
"I'm telling ya, this is a bad joke," Tarot grumbled, shaking his staff like it was a magic wand. "I swear, if I see one more balloon taunting me—"
Outside the maze, Kyora, Yumiko, and Aurora were watching the chaotic display on the giant screen, eyes wide as they witnessed their friends' total meltdown.
"What's going on with them?" Yumiko asked, a grin creeping across her face. "It's like they can't even see the same game."
Aurora snorted. "I don't know, but it's hilarious. It's like they're chasing invisible balloons or something. They've got no chance at this."
Kyora raised an eyebrow. "Is this part of the challenge? Maybe they're seeing a different set of balloons than the others. It's just like them to screw it up like that."
Back inside the maze, the confusion deepened as the pirates began to realize that something was very wrong.
"I swear, that balloon was right there!" Temoshí shouted, pointing to an empty spot. "How did it—? It was right in front of me! What kind of trickery is this?"
"I know! I was just about to catch one!" Tarot yelled, looking at his empty hands in disbelief. "Now I can't even find the one I was after! Who set this up? Aurelio?"
"I've had it!" Nathaniel snapped, leaping into the air to grab one balloon that seemed to grow bigger and smaller like it had a mind of its own. "These things are taunting me now. First they disappear, then they shrink, then they get bigger? Am I hallucinating or are the balloons evolving?"
"I don't know, but they're definitely not where I'm looking," Temoshí muttered, trying to make sense of the madness. "How is it that you guys don't see what I see?"
"What do you mean?" Tarot asked, completely oblivious. He twirled his staff around, looking like he was in the middle of a dramatic dance routine. "This place is a mess, sure, but I'm not having any problem grabbing these things. They're right here in front of me!"
"I… I don't get it…" Nathaniel muttered, scratching his head in confusion. "I'm trying to grab them, but they keep moving! I swear they're mocking me. Who is messing with me?"
Temoshí's eyes slowly widened as realization hit. "Wait a minute..."
"We're all seeing different balloons!" Tarot shouted, jumping back like he'd just solved a mystery. "It's like a funhouse, but with balloons! No wonder none of us can grab the same one!"
"Wait… are we all seeing different balloons?" Nathaniel said slowly, his voice tinged with panic. "You mean I've been chasing one balloon this whole time, but it wasn't the same one you guys saw?"
"Yep, that's about the size of it," Temoshí grumbled. "We've been running around this maze chasing a bunch of phantoms."
"This is unbelievable," Nathaniel said, putting his hands on his hips in disbelief. "This is like the worst scavenger hunt ever. We're all on a different scavenger hunt."
"Great, so we're just running in circles, trying to grab the wrong balloons," Temoshí said, crossing his arms with a dramatic sigh. "I'm pretty sure this isn't what I signed up for."
Tarot rolled his eyes. "You think? No wonder we're all missing so much. So, what now?"
"Well, I don't know about you guys," Temoshí said, suddenly fired up, "but I'm getting that key if it kills me! I'll grab whatever balloon I can—key or no key—just to put this mess behind me."
Nathaniel smirked. "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm grabbing my balloon first. I don't care if it's a balloon or a freakin' cloud at this point, I'm not letting it slip away again."
Back outside, the girls were now in stitches as they watched the pirates scramble, running into each other and getting increasingly frustrated.
"I don't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for them," Yumiko said, holding her stomach. "I'm pretty sure they've all lost it. This is taking way longer than it should."
Aurora smirked. "Maybe they should've listened when we told them to be careful. But this is way too funny to stop now."
Kyora's grin widened. "Honestly, I'm kind of enjoying this. We should send Aurelio a thank-you card. This is turning out to be more fun than I thought."
Meanwhile, inside the maze, the pirates continued chasing their own hallucinations of balloons, determined to catch the one balloon that might hold the elusive key… assuming they could even grab it before it disappeared again.
