Chapter 31: Coffee
Gregor went to a small bakery near the hotel that he had noticed the previous day.
As he entered, he was met with the smell of fresh bread and coffee. A wave of nostalgia passed through him, and for a moment he forgot his purpose going there.
He quickly composed himself and sat down at one of the tables, pretending to read the menu while carefully glancing around.
The bakery was owned by an elderly woman, and it was one of the oldest businesses in town, with more than 30 years of history.
The previous day, when Gregor was singing and dancing, the owner of the bakery had been among the people watching him. Because of that, he hadn't used the Eye of Providence to view her vision.
Gregor decided to go there not to investigate, but to see the state of the owner, Arabella Harrel, the grandmother of the second victim.
He ordered a small cup of coffee and a Lola bread; the cost was 13 pence, 10 for the coffee and 3 for the bread.
Gregor chose the Lola bread because it reminded him of the baguette bread from his original world. The only difference was that the Lola bread was smaller but thicker.
The Lola bread could be eaten plain or stuffed with different fillings, usually meat and cheeses, turning it into a sandwich. Gregor decided to enjoy it plain.
While eating, Gregor couldn't help but feel relaxed. The store's windows were open, allowing the warm spring breeze to flow inside.
The quiet, calm atmosphere, the excellent service from the owner, and the delicious food made Gregor feel welcomed and at home.
He couldn't help but steal glances at the owner. He noticed that, despite her inviting smile for customers, her eyes betrayed her true feelings. An immense longing for something lost and an indescribable sadness.
Her smile trembled from time to time, almost fading before she composed herself.
Gregor found it strange that he could discern so much just by looking at her. He thought it might be an effect of the Delusional Potion or perhaps a natural talent of Michael's body. But ever since got transmigrated into that world, he had noticed himself becoming more empathetic and understanding of others' feelings, especially after Rebecca's death.
He couldn't say whether this change was for the better or worse, and, of course, he wouldn't admit it to himself. To some extent, Gregor was always acting as a Delusional, lying to himself and believing his own lies.
After a pleasant and relaxing time, Gregor felt energized and motivated to continue his investigation.
Since neither his knowledge of the novel nor Michael's memories indicated whether tipping was polite in Lenburg, Gregor paid using two 1 Soli bills, which would make his change 11 pence. Without waiting for his change, Gregor simply left, leaving the 11 pence as a tip.
As Gregor roamed through the town, seeing people's visions with his Eyes, he once again recalled what he already knew about the murders.
He noticed that each murder happened a week apart. Following that line of thought, he deduced that the next murder would happen on May 1st.
Using the location where the bodies were found, Gregor believed that either the murder would happen in the northeast part of town, or that the body would be found there.
Even though he now had a lead for his investigation, Gregor couldn't help but feel anxious since he had less than 5 days to prevent another murder.
Devison Bell was developed around the train station, where most of the town's businesses were located, the only exception being the town hall, which was located in the northern part of town. Parts like the northeast were mostly residential.
Gregor was even more worried because the murder could happen in any house. Anyone there could be the killer, and he had no way of knowing or checking everywhere.
He deduced that if he was right and the killer was a Beyonder of the Criminal Pathway, he was most probably a Sequence 7 or below, because, by his knowledge of the novel, the Sequence 6, Devil, had a Danger Premonition capable of sensing danger for a whole 24 hours.
Gregor wasn't scared; he thought that if the killer was a Sequence 6 or above, he would have already died or would be the next victim. Whether the killer was a Devil or not, Gregor would have the opportunity to meet him soon.
He wandered around the northeast part of town, trying to familiarize himself with the surroundings.
Every new person Gregor saw, he used his eyes to see their vision, but as he already expected, every vision just showed another point of view of Eleanor's vision.
By then, he had already seen half of the town's visions.
After activating and deactivating the Eye of Providence so many times, Gregor noticed that forcing the eyes to activate without any stimulation was too draining for his already low spirituality.
Because of that, he used his knowledge of the novel to adapt the way the protagonist made a switch that activated his Spirit Vision by touching his glabella.
Instead of touching his glabella, Gregor made it so that when he clenched one of his fists twice, the Eye of Providence would be activated or deactivated.
That made the process of using the Eye of Providence less draining, both physically and spiritually.
Even though it was barely 12:00, Gregor was already tired from using too much of his spirituality; he decided to go back to the hotel, rest, and then go back to investigating.
Since he was a new Beyonder, he wasn't willing to use all of his spirituality, scared that it would start a chain of events that would lead him to lose control.
As he was going back to the hotel, he noticed Eleanor also leaving from the northeast to the hotel with a small basket in her hands.
Her shift at the hotel was from 12:00 to a while before sunset, usually 17:00.
Eleanor approached him, confused about why he was there. "Are you lost, Gregor?"
Gregor masked his anxiety and worry with a soft smile.
"No, I'm just taking a walk; today is such a beautiful day, isn't it?"
Used to the town's weather, Lana looked around, noticing for the first time in a long time how beautiful it was.
"I guess you're right..." she replied. "Where are you heading anyway?"
"I'm going back to the hotel. What about you?" Even though Gregor knew she was also going to the hotel, he asked to keep the conversation going.
"I'm also heading there. How about we go together?" She answered with her usual smile.
"Sure," Gregor replied. "Do you need help with that?" He asked, pointing to the small basket she was carrying.
"Don't worry, it's not heavy; it's just a lunch my sister made for me."
"Oh, so you don't live in that part of town." Gregor's tone had a hint of relief.
Eleanor found it a little weird that he focused on that but just took it as a way he used to keep the conversation flowing.
"No, I live with my mom and dad downtown."
Gregor was a little relieved that, at least, he didn't have to worry about her, even though living in another part of town wasn't a guarantee of safety, it at least reduced the chances of her being the next victim.
After less than 10 minutes, they arrived at the hotel. Eleanor went to the reception, and Gregor went to his room to rest.
