Chapter 11: Chapter 3.2 A land of Adventures
POV David
April 27th 913 (2016)
"Thanks again for the help." The young man that we'd helped a few days ago on the road smiled at us brightly. We were all smeared with the blood of goblins and the grime of the road, as were the soldiers of his escort. His eyes clouded a bit as he remembered the past few days.
"It's alright Alex." Rebecca cooed softly as she pulled the little guy close in for a hug. Smith looked away awkwardly as some of the passersby started giving our odd group looks.
We'd been riding up the old Veridian Highway when we stumbled across carriage being ambushed by goblins. The guards were being overwhelmed, our intervention had let us rescue the guy and the few surviving guards, though two had passed from their injuries. He'd claimed he had family in the capital, his mother and sisters. Though now we stood before the adventures guild at the insistence of the guards.
We headed inside, chatter briefly quieting as we entered. I guess it was an uncommon sight for some random adventure to enter the guild with a small child and a pair of knights. The knights strode straight to the counter where the receptionist stared wide eyed. They spoke in a hushed tone with the receptionists before they were gestured to follow. To which we were told to follow.
Little Alex joyfully followed, waving at the smartly dressed guild staff as we headed down the staff hallway and into a waiting room. The staff provided snacks and drinks. We gladly sunk into the sofa and joked with Alex while the knights stood guard by the entrance. We waited nearly half an hour, casting the occasional glance at the knights.
Suddenly the door burst open and a woman decked in silver armor entered the room. The armor was obviously custom made, being fitted to her figure and reliefs of angelic wings being upon her shoulders. The helmet below her arm even had little wings where her ears would be, though it also fully exposed the face.
"Alex, oh thank the mother your safe!" She cried out as Alex ran up to her with a beaming smile.
"Veria! You're so big now! And shiny…" the boy patted the silver chest plate in front of him as Veria lifted him into the air.
Smith coughed. Veria's smile vanished as she took us in. "And who might you be?"
"They are the adventures that rescued his highness from the goblins." One of the knights replied.
She held up a gauntleted hand. "That doesn't answer my question."
I could feel Rebecca's anger nearing its boiling point, and Smith was as likely to start screaming as talk… damn, son of a—-…
"David Fulton, these are my siblings, Smith and Rebecca. Who do we have the pleasure of meeting?"
"Veria Alison Yuri Vandamme." She replied.
"A pleasure to make the acquaintance." I replied with a small nod of my head.
"You've done a service today I won't soon forget." She pulled a small pouch from behind her back and tossed it at me. I fumbled the catch and sent it up in the air where Smith caught it with ease.
She nodded her head towards the door. Point taken. "We'll take our leave."
"Ver…" Alex tugged at the woman's arm.
"Not now Alex." She replied as we filed out and went to the front counter.
I walked up to the receptionist and pulled out a few quest sheets from a few towns back and presented the trophies for completion. "I'd like to complete these quests."
"Ah, of course." The man replied and quickly began inspecting the documents. He handed over payment for the quests and we left the guild. It was only midday, I turned to my siblings.
"So, should we head off to the great honking thing they call a palace or should we hit the market and see what junk we can scrounge for lunch?" I asked jovially.
Smith tossed me a pouch. Damn thing nearly fell. "Let's get something nice to eat. Saving that kid got us a few hundred silvers."
"Ohh! I heard there a pretty good restaurant not far from here, let's go check it out." Rebecca said excitedly as she started heading off down some random side street.
Oh come on. Smith and I exchanged helpless looks as we chased after her. She only stopped in front of some posh cafe looking place as she tromped up to a butler. "Table for 3!"
The butler wrinkled his nose. "Your kind doesn't have the finances to eat at this fine establishment."
"Hey Rebecca, let's not get ahead of ourselves, we're still covered in road grime. Let's not inconvenience other patrons." I gently pulled back on her arm before she could go off. Smith didn't look too pleased with how the butler had responded either.
"Fine. I'll be back, mark my words." She glowered at the butler as we pulled her away from the now incensed butler.
"Let's find an inn with a bath and rent a room, freshen up a bit." I proposed
"Fine, but I still want dinner." Rebecca grumbled as smith and I located an inn that fit our needs. Relatively middle class, attached to a public bath. The two rooms for a night only cost 24 silver too. Expensive as things go, but we had extra spending money at the moment.
I passed the innkeeper and asked him to send food up in an hour. I headed upstairs and joined smith in our room. I dropped most of my stuff and headed down to the bath.
I took a quick soak and scrubbed the grime from my body before hopping out and drying off before heading back to my room. A nice meal was waiting for me as I entered too.
