Chapter 11: Chapter 11 Silly
He walked past several chairs to his desk and sat down.
"Dr. Ning, both of them are graduate students, one from West City Hospital and the other just graduated and came for further specialty training," Director Xu introduced.
Ding Yiyuan immediately added, "I graduated with a Ph.D."
Ruan Liuzheng remained silent. In fact, Ding Yiyuan's declaration seemed somewhat superfluous; how could someone not know her background?
"Um," he was neither very enthusiastic nor indifferent; this was his usual attitude, "You start training first, and come directly to the department in three days. Come early, don't be late."
"Yes!" Ding Yiyuan responded loudly, paused, and then asked, "Teacher Ning, shall we go ahead?"
"Go ahead," he said.
"Okay, goodbye Teacher Ning, goodbye Director Xu, goodbye to all the teachers," Ding Yiyuan turned and left promptly.
Ruan Liuzheng was indeed dazed and slow today, and hiding behind Ding Yiyuan examining her collar was one thing, but not knowing when to leave was another. As soon as Ding Yiyuan turned around, she was exposed in his line of sight, facing him directly.
His gaze was piercing as he looked at her; Ruan Liuzheng was frozen.
After six years, he seemed thinner, but otherwise, there was no significant change. Those eyes, like a clear night sky, the stars coldly shining down, dizzying her.
She quickly averted her gaze, and softly said, "Teacher Ning."
Her gaze wandered, finding nowhere to rest, and fell on his interlaced fingers resting on the desk, slender and fair. She remembered their temperature when they were entwined, cool.
She didn't know what he would say. The brief seconds felt as long as torture.
She had to face this moment. She braced herself internally, taking deep breaths in silence.
"Go ahead," he said, his gaze gentle.
She hesitated, truly not expecting their reunion after six years to be like this. His tone, calm as a breeze, seemed very familiar yet as if they had never known each other. Shouldn't he be saying "How are you, Liuzheng?" or "Liuzheng, it's been a long time?" or some other such nonsense?
Stunned, she replied "Oh," and turned to leave.
Exiting the office, she finally took a deep breath.
For this reunion, as if preparing for a siege, she had built up such mental defenses, only for it to end so easily when it came to it.
Unexpectedly, but indeed it relaxed her quite a bit.
Compared to the tense or dramatically nostalgic scenarios she had imagined, this gentle approach was much better. Suddenly she felt like those entangled years with him had drifted away with this gentle breeze and rain, as if she had returned to her first year of college, when she had walked into the wrong lab and encountered him working on a microscope, a glance up, bright stars flowing like water in his eyes.
If only life were as good as the first sight. Not everyone can achieve that.
This way, it was really good.
Unconsciously, a smile crept onto her face. After all, whether those years with him were sweet or bitter, love or debt, she had never blamed him. He would always be her Senior Brother Ning, the young man in white who dazzled her at first sight and then dominated her entire youth.
"Ha!" A cold laugh, someone stood in her way.
She blinked away the slight moisture at the corners of her eyes, looking at Ding Yiyuan, unsure what she meant.
"You really are scheming, aren't you?" Ding Yiyuan's tone was mocking, "Staying so long after I left to make a deeper impression on Teacher Ning and Director Xu? Let me tell you, don't waste your effort! You getting into Beiya is impossible!"
