Chapter 17: Chapter 17 Pride2
Staring at that bottle of stomach medicine, Ruan Liuzheng wanted to say something many times, but the words just spun around on her tongue and couldn't come out.
In repeated hesitation, the car finally stopped.
She didn't know where they were until she looked up and saw him turn around just at that moment, his eyes clear and bright in the dark car.
"What flavor do you want to eat?" he asked gently.
For a moment, she didn't know what he meant. Glancing outside, she realized the car was parked in front of Miwei Baking.
It was this bakery where they often stopped to buy cakes on their way home back then. Sometimes she would get out of the car to choose with him, but most of the time she waited in the car while he went in, especially when it was too sunny or too cold, not to mention in heavy rain like today.
It seemed as if this was the first time they had spoken face to face alone today. She bit her lip lightly, organized her thoughts, and tried to keep her voice steady, "No need, I don't eat cake anymore."
"Is that so?" he said, looking at her, his eyes speckled with light and shadow, "But you were staring at Feifei's box of cakes all morning."
He had noticed? Did he have eyes in the back of his head?
But had she really stared so obviously in the morning?
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, her face turned slightly red, "No... I wasn't... staring..." Her evasive eyes sparkled and were more lustrous before she ultimately bowed her head.
"How about matcha cheesecake?" he asked again.
Matcha had once been her favorite flavor.
She hurriedly shook her head, "Really, no need! I... I'm afraid of getting fat now, I don't eat it anymore." Besides, with the heavy rain outside, he would get soaked even with an umbrella if he went out to buy one.
"Really?" He seemed unconvinced and pressed with another question, glancing over her slender figure.
"Really! When have I ever been polite about eating something!" she blurted out without thinking.
He nodded slightly, "Alright then." After speaking, he turned back and began to drive again.
She sighed, feeling that her response had been too casual, as if she had reverted to the way she used to be...
The old her really hadn't been polite at all. She remembered how she would slow down her steps while walking, and then when he wasn't paying attention, she would take a run-up and jump onto his back, laughing to herself. People do grow up.
Leaning back against the seat, raindrops tapped against the window like beans, showing no sign of letting up. The road outside gleamed, indicating severe waterlogging.
After driving for a while, the car couldn't move any further; it was stuck in a long line of traffic.
After looking around for a bit, he turned off the engine, "Looks like we won't be going anywhere for a while." He turned to her again, "Are you hungry?"
It was eight o'clock, to say she wasn't hungry would've been a lie. If it had been before, she would've nodded fiercely and then clung onto his arm demanding to eat this and that, but now, she shook her head, "Not hungry."
Yet he completely ignored her response, leaning forward to open the glove compartment in front of the passenger seat, taking out a row of milk and handing her several bags of snacks, "We're completely stuck, can't drive out. Have some of these to tide you over."
She looked at them: yogurt? Biscuits? Nuts?
None of these were what he liked! In the past, she had to peel walnut and almond snacks for him to eat the pure nuts, and he wouldn't eat them unless she fed him directly and even then begrudgingly took a bite, not to mention biscuits and yogurt...
Holding onto the snacks, she shook the bag in her hand and smiled, "Have you changed?"
