Chapter 47: I am Batman
Ami didn't wait for the Samjokgu to make the first move. Her transformation gave her a surge of adrenaline, and she sprang upward, her claws digging into the wall of the nearest building as she vaulted onto the rooftop. The Samjokgu howled in unison and followed, their movements unnaturally swift and animalistic.
The rooftops of Seoul became a deadly maze as Ami leaped from one building to the next, her nine tails streaming behind her like ghostly banners. She didn't look back and just kept her mind on running away. The snarls and thudding footsteps of her pursuers were enough to tell her that they were just behind her.
Her sharp vision scanned ahead. The city's intricate architecture gave her options—skyscrapers loomed, their neon lights reflecting off glass surfaces, while smaller, older buildings provided a network of ledges and fire escapes. Ami darted left, her foxfire lighting her path.
One of the Samjokgu launched itself at her midair. She twisted, a blur of motion, and sent a pulse of foxfire toward it. The creature yelped as the blue flames seared its fur, but it recovered quickly, snarling louder as if enraged by the injury.
Ami hit the next rooftop hard, rolling to absorb the impact. She barely had time to steady herself before the second Samjokgu was on her. Its massive form collided with her, knocking her onto her back. Its claws raked her hoodie, shredding the fabric. Ami hissed and retaliated with a slash of her own, her claws carving deep gouges into its side. The creature howled, staggering back.
She sprang to her feet, but the third Samjokgu had flanked her. It lunged, jaws snapping inches from her face. Ami ducked and slid under its belly, slicing upward with her claws as she passed. Blood sprayed onto the rooftop, and the beast roared in fury.
The Samjokgu regrouped, circling her like wolves. Their glowing red eyes burned with malice.
Ami's breath came in short gasps. Her mind raced as she calculated her next move. She couldn't keep fighting like this. Every exchange sapped her energy, and her wounds, while healing, slowed her down.
She summoned her foxfire again, forming an arc of flames around her. The Samjokgu stopped for a moment, their instincts wary of the deadly heat. Taking advantage of their momentary pause, Ami jumped to the next building. Her speed and strength have increased, but she was rusty. Had it been ten years earlier, she would have run away with ease.
The creatures roared and chased her, jumping and running across the rooftops with terrifying speed.
One of them lunged at her from above. Ami spun midair, slamming it with a blast of foxfire. The blue flame exploded. The beast crashed into the alley below, with a bone-crunching thud. But there was no time to celebrate. The other two were gaining on her.
She reached a rooftop garden, its greenery providing brief cover. Ami ducked behind a water tank, her heart was beating faster than ever. She was exhausted. Her ears twitched, catching the sound of claws scraping metal. The Samjokgu were closing in. She looked around for a weapon or anything. She noticed a steel pipe, lying near the ledge.
Grabbing it, she infused it with her foxfire, the flames clinging to the metal like liquid light. As the first Samjokgu rounded the corner, she swung the improvised weapon with all her strength. The pipe connected with a sickening crack, sending the creature sprawling. Black blood spewed everywhere from the impact.
The second Samjokgu didn't give her time to recover. It lunged, its jaws clamping down on her arm. Ami screamed as pain shot through her, but she didn't falter. She dropped the pipe and clawed at the beast's face, her sharp nails finding purchase. The creature released her with a snarl, blood dripping from its torn muzzle.
Ami didn't waste a second. She vaulted over the edge of the roof, landing on a lower ledge. The impact jarred her injured arm, but she gritted her teeth and kept moving. She leaped to another building, her movements growing more desperate as exhaustion set in. She was getting slow. Her injuries that were supposed to heal weren't healing like before. Black smoke was rising from her wound.
The Samjokgu followed relentlessly, their howls echoing through the night.
Ami's vision blurred. She was running out of time and options. Her instincts screamed at her to run away, but every direction seemed blocked. No matter how much she ran, those there just won't give up.
Then she saw it—a construction site ahead. Metal pipes, planks, cranes... It was a half-made structure. It wasn't ideal, but she could use it to her advantage.
Ami darted toward the site, weaving through the maze of beams and half-finished walls. The Samjokgu hesitated at the edge, their primal instincts battling their desire to pursue.
"Come on," Ami muttered, summoning her foxfire. She threw a blast at the base of the scaffolding, setting it ablaze. The flames roared to life, creating a barrier between her and the creatures.
For a moment, she thought she'd bought herself some time. But the Samjokgu wasn't deterred. One of them leaped through the fire, its fur igniting as it landed on the scaffolding. It didn't seem to care, its focus was solely on her.
Ami climbed higher, the unstable structure creaking beneath her weight. The other two Samjokgu followed, their massive forms causing the beams to groan ominously.
She reached the top of the scaffolding and turned to look at her pursuers. The foxfire burned brighter, illuminating the night with pale blue. The Samjokgu stopped, their glowing eyes narrowing.
"This ends here," Ami growled, though she wasn't sure if it was a promise or a plea.
The lead Samjokgu lunged, and Ami met it head-on. Their clash sent sparks flying, the air crackling with energy. She slashed and dodged, her movements a blur of desperation and fury.
The other two closed in and attacked her, trying to bite her flesh off. Ami fought with everything she had, but the odds were against her. A claw raked across her back, and she stumbled, nearly falling from the scaffolding.
And beneath them, the ground groaned; the combined weights of battle made it shudder at the strain.
Ami's eyes darted to the nearby crane. It was her last chance. Summoning the last of her strength, she leaped onto the crane's arm, the narrow beam swaying under her weight.
The Samjokgu followed, their feral growls echoing in the night.
Ami reached the end of the crane and turned, her foxfire blazing around her. She poured every ounce of her power into a single attack, the flames surging toward the creatures like a tidal wave.
The blast hit the lead Samjokgu head-on, engulfing it in blue fire. Its agony-filled howl echoed through the night as the flames consumed it.
"Hufff! Hufff! Damn it!" Ami's breath came in ragged gasps, her vision was blurry due to the exhaustion She steadied herself on the narrow beam of the crane, her nine tails flickering as the energy they radiated began to disappear.
But just as she dared to hope it was over, the impossible happened.
From the heart of the blue inferno, two charred forms erupted, their claws extended and glowing with a demonic light. Ami barely had time to react. One of the creatures slashed her across the chest, the impact sending her stumbling backward. The other landed a critical hit on her side, its claws tearing into her flesh. "Argg!!" Blood sprayed into the air as Ami cried out, her body arching in agony.
The Samjokgu fell to the ground below, their bodies dissolving into ash even as their final strikes reverberated through her. Ami teetered on the edge of the crane, her transformation flickering. Her fox ears and tails dissolved into smoke, her glowing eyes dimming to their usual brown. The pain was intense and she could barely feel her body. She tried to regain her balance, but her body gave out.
With a gasp, she fell.
The wind howling in her ears... Everything was as if they were frozen in time... So slow...
Ami prepared herself for the impact, but she fell on a pile of discarded netting and scaffolding tarps. It was still enough to take the wind from her, and she lay there motionless, fighting to remain conscious.
She wasn't healing.
"No," she barely moved her lips. "Not like this..."
The faint sound of footsteps reached her ears. She clenched her fists and tried to sit up, fighting the pain. She saw two figures emerging from the shadows, their forms backlit by the flickering remains of her foxfire. For a fleeting moment, she thought it might be more Samjokgu, coming to finish what the others had started.
They were far and due to her blurry vision, she couldn't see properly.
But as they stepped closer, she recognized them.
Mina. Seojun.
Ami's blood ran cold as she realized the truth. They weren't human. Their eyes glowed red, she could sense the demonic energy radiating from them.
"Mina... Seojun..." Her voice cracked with disbelief. "No... it can't be... Cough! Cough!" She coughed out blood.
Mina's lips curled into a chilling smile, her usual playful demeanor replaced by something darker. "You've been keeping secrets, Ami," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "And you're not the only one. It was really hard to detect your energy. Who knew that there were more of our kind still hunting for the last bloodline? But in the end, they did our job easier. If not for them, we wouldn't have found your real identity."
Seojun's glasses caught the dim light as he pushed them up the bridge of his nose. His calm, steady demeanor remained, but it was now layered with an eerie, calculating coldness. "It was a good choice... Running and killing them," he said, his tone devoid of warmth. "Now look at you, all bleeding and weak... Now, we'll take our time, skinning you, and oh, boy... There's so many things I want to do with that body of yours."
Ami's heart shattered as realization sank in. Her friends—the people she had trusted most—weren't who she thought they were.
And now, they were here to kill her.
A sudden hiss filled the air as a smoke grenade clattered to the ground, releasing a thick, gray cloud that swallowed the scene. Ami struggled to focus, her vision swimming with pain and fatigue. Mina and Seojun tensed, their glowing red eyes scanning the haze, their predatory instincts kicking in.
"Show yourself," Mina snarled, her voice cutting through the dense fog.
Seojun adjusted his stance, his demonic energy crackling around him. "Who dares interrupt?" he muttered, his calm façade cracking just slightly.
The only response was silence—thick, oppressive, and unnerving.
Then, from the shadows, a deep, gravelly voice echoed. "Step away from her."
A sharp, metallic clang followed as a sleek black figure dropped into the midst of the smoke, the cape swirling like a phantom. The dim light of the foxfire caught on the pointed ears, the armored suit, and the bat symbol on the chest. He glanced back and aimed his right arm at the injured girl. A spark of lightning shot out from his lighting ring and teleported her to the Shield's base.
Mina and Seojun jumped back, their eyes widening in shock.
Batman growled, his presence was intimidating.
Seojun sneered, his composure returning. "Who the hell are you?" he spat.
"I'm Batman," Batman said, his voice devoid of emotion.
Mina took a step forward, her smile turning feral. "So... a man, dressed as a bat. Is this how you save the day? How cute."
Batman didn't flinch. He reached for his belt, his movements deliberately slow. "You'll find out soon enough," he said, his voice dropping dangerously low. "But first..."
He pressed a button on his wrist-mounted computer, activating the sound emitters hidden in his belt.
"GAAAHHH!!!" Both of them collapsed holding their ears as the high-pitched sound waves cut through the night.
"Isn't it fun? Demonic wolves with enhanced senses... Enhanced hearing. This frequency is designed specifically for those creatures," Batman spoke in a normal tone, but his words carried an unspoken threat.
The sound faded, and Mina and Seojun picked themselves up, their faces contorted with rage.
"You'll pay for that," Seojun growled.
But within seconds both fell to their knees. Blood gushed out from their eyes, ears, and nose. Their skin began to melt away, revealing their demonic forms underneath.
Batman stood motionless as the two monsters writhed and shrieked in agony.
"Nanites... The smoke you two inhaled contained nanites that are now eating away at your bodies from the inside," he said coldly. "Painful, isn't it? Now, I have some questions for you."
The two monsters tried to crawl toward him, but their limbs gave out.
"How many of you are still alive in this modern era?"
"Fuck you!" Mina spat through gritted teeth.
"Wrong answer." Batman tapped a few buttons on his gauntlet. The sound waves intensified, and the monsters screamed louder.
"We're... all... dead! There are only five of us! The last of our kind!" Seojun rasped, his voice barely audible over the noise.
"Base location?"
"We don't know! They never tell us!" Mina cried out. "Please... stop!"
"Then you are of no use to me," Batman just stood there watching as the nanites continued their work.
Their screams soon turned into whimpers and then finally faded away into nothing. The two demons slumped onto the ground, their bodies dissolving into ash. He then absorbed the nanites.
Jarvis's voice came through the comms [DNA collection successful]
"Good. Begin the research. I want to see how good their DNA is..."
With a spark of lightning, Batman disappeared from the spot.
