Chapter 82: Chapter 82: George the Magician
"How long will it take to make?"
George's eyes lit up. He had been skeptical about the possibility, but now it seemed hopeful.
"Two minutes. What size and color do you want?" Tony asked.
With the machinery in his workshop, even the complex Mark armor only took five hours to produce. A simple alloy rod would be a matter of minutes.
George pondered for a moment before replying, "If possible, I'd like something like this…"
"Hm, it's doable, but it might take a little longer," Tony said after considering George's request.
George's idea was straightforward. Since the wand couldn't amplify his magic and would primarily speed up spellcasting, it didn't need to stick to the traditional small wooden rod design.
Instead, he envisioned a wand that could take on multiple forms:
- A ring: Convenient to carry and inconspicuous.
- A sword: Doubling as a weapon, controlled magnetically for both magic casting and melee combat.
- A massive club: For use when he cast giant magic and grew too large to use a ring. It could function as a magical tool and a weapon for close combat.
If he had access to suitable materials, he would have opted for a traditional wand. After all, that design had been refined by centuries of wizardry to maximize magical amplification. For now, this was the best compromise.
As Tony began crafting the items, George turned to him and asked, "How do you plan to deal with Obadiah?"
"First, I need concrete evidence of his crimes. But since he's already conspired with the board to temporarily remove me, I can't access Stark Tower.
So, I've asked my assistant to go to my office, hack into the company's system, and copy all the shipping manifests. That should provide the proof we need to link Obadiah to arms deals with terrorists. Once we have that, he'll spend the rest of his life in prison."
Tony spoke with confidence.
George nodded. It was indeed a solid plan. He then turned to Wolverine and asked, "Logan, have you ever worked as a bodyguard? If so, you'll need to accompany Tony's assistant to ensure her safety."
"Bodyguard? Done that more times than I can count. I remember once protecting a spoiled heiress—ended up in bed with her and got hunted by her father for a year."
Wolverine chuckled, puffing on his cigar as he reminisced.
Tony's face stiffened at the comment, and he turned to George. "On second thought, maybe you should go protect my assistant."
"I don't mind."
George agreed after a moment of thought. It wasn't that he didn't trust Wolverine with Pepper; it was just that Wolverine's face was too recognizable to certain groups, like S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Moreover, Logan's temper might cause unnecessary trouble. It would be safer for George to go.
Not long after, Pepper arrived at the mansion. George received the freshly crafted alloy ring and imbued it with Professor X's hair as the core, creating a high-tech wand.
"Transfiguro!"
Wearing the alloy ring on his finger, George cast a spell, pointing at a nearby wastebasket. It instantly transformed into a small cat, which began meowing.
"The wand doesn't amplify magic at all, but the casting speed is comparable to a traditional wand. It meets expectations."
"Tony... are you sure your friend is really just a magician?"
Pepper and Tony had just entered the room and caught George mid-transfiguration. Seeing the wastebasket-turned-cat, Pepper was visibly startled.
Tony hesitated for a moment before replying, "You know how magicians are—they pull off incredible tricks. Most turn birds into hats; he's just better at cats. Anyway, if there's trouble, he can use his magic to get you out of it."
Tony avoided revealing George's true identity or their plans to Pepper to keep her from worrying.
"Well then, Mr. Magician, I'll be counting on you."
Pepper still seemed skeptical. While magic tricks involving birds were common, this felt entirely different. She couldn't help but wonder if George's abilities resembled those from movies like Now You See Me.
"Always happy to help," George said with a smile. He instructed Wolverine to stay behind and protect Tony, then followed Pepper to the car.
The drive to Stark Tower from Malibu took several hours. George used the time to meditate, focusing his attention on his two magical avatars in other worlds to accelerate their studies.
Pepper, curious about George, initially wanted to engage him in conversation. However, seeing him resting with his eyes closed, she refrained.
As Tony's personal assistant, Pepper knew everyone he interacted with—even his one-night stands. Yet George remained a mystery. Apart from the doctor who had returned with Tony from captivity, this was the first time she had met someone she didn't recognize.
By midday, they finally arrived at Stark Tower. As they entered the ground-floor lobby, they were stopped by a bald, middle-aged man.
"Miss Potts, do you have a moment? I'd like to have a word with Mr. Stark."
"You're that... S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Coulson, right? I'm in a hurry right now, but you're welcome to wait here."
Pepper responded nonchalantly after recalling who he was.
George glanced at the man, recognizing him immediately: 'Agent Coulson of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division—an eighth-level agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. If memory serves, he's a fan of Captain America and the one who was killed by Loki during the Chitauri invasion, only to be resurrected with Kree blood by Fury.'
Despite this recognition, George quickly averted his gaze. He had no intention of interacting with S.H.I.E.L.D. for now. Knowing Nick Fury's methods, the director would undoubtedly take measures against them, much like he had with the Inhumans.
Besides, S.H.I.E.L.D. was effectively compromised at this point. Half its agents were secretly Hydra operatives.
"Very well, Miss Potts. I'll wait here," Coulson said politely, returning to a nearby bench with a smile. He picked up a newspaper and began reading.
However, as George and Pepper left, Coulson discreetly shifted his attention, locking his gaze on George.
