Chapter 10: Chapter 6 Name_1
He opened his eyes and saw the ceiling; he closed them and opened them again, and still, it was the ceiling.
His mind felt a bit empty; for a moment, he had no idea where he was, as if he had just had a nightmare, but couldn't recall what it was about.
Not until he heard the regular snoring and turned his head to see Bottle Cap fast asleep on the other bed did his consciousness suddenly fill the void in his brain.
It wasn't a dream; everything was real, and he was now lying on the bed in a motel room, more importantly, in a San Diego motel room.
He first picked up the cell phone beside the pillow; it was 5:58 AM on April 16, 2018, which meant it was also time to get up.
He sat up, reached under the pillow, and took out a handgun, turning it over in his hands several times. Gao Guang felt that if he disregarded being kidnapped yesterday, this was almost like a dream come true.
Just then, the alarm clock on the bedside table began to beep. Bottle Cap, who had been fast asleep a moment before, sat up abruptly and quickly turned off the alarm.
After a long yawn, Bottle Cap, awakened by the alarm, looked at Gao Guang and then at the gun in his hand, and suddenly asked, "Why are you holding a gun?"
Gao Guang sincerely replied, "Because I like it, I've never... um... held a gun this way before."
Bottle Cap, impatiently waving his hand, said with annoyance, "Hmph, a Glock is just a tool, not an art piece worth admiring. Put away your gun; it's time to get to work."
He didn't know how the Captain had negotiated with the middleman, but they had agreed to meet at 6:30 AM for the transaction, so indeed it was time to get up and get to work.
The work at hand was to hand over Arturo and collect the final payment.
Last night, Gao Guang had spent a long time calming Arturo down, convincing him he was safe. But to prevent Arturo from doing something foolish again, Gao Guang and Bottle Cap had to sleep in the same room as him, keeping an eye on him. Since a standard room only had two beds, Arturo had no choice but to sleep on the floor.
Poor Arturo, his experiences were a real nightmare.
Gao Guang nudged Arturo, who immediately woke up from his sleep, looking at Gao Guang and Bottle Cap in panic.
Bottle Cap signaled for Gao Guang to speak, and in Spanish, Gao Guang said, "Wake up, it's time to get up. The people to pick you up will be here soon."
Arturo seemed to need a moment to comprehend his situation. After staring blankly at Gao Guang for a while, he slowly sat up and then held his chest, saying, "I think I've broken a few ribs."
Without changing his expression, Gao Guang replied calmly, "Those damned kidnappers broke your ribs, but it's good that you're alive."
"You're right... the damned kidnappers, thank God I was rescued."
At that moment, Arturo seemed not so foolish after all.
Helping Arturo up as he had several broken ribs, getting up was somewhat difficult.
Bottle Cap opened the door, which led directly outside to the yard instead of to a typical hotel corridor. After scanning the surroundings briefly, Bottle Cap gestured with his head toward Gao Guang, who then pushed Arturo out of the room.
The Captain, Rubber, and Joey, the three of them, didn't stay at a hotel; instead, they switched and ditched cars for quite a while before deciding to sleep in their own vehicle overnight.
The drug dealer's car had to be dumped to avoid being discovered by the Zeta Group. Even though they had crossed the border, Mexican drug traffickers crossing the border to commit murder wasn't unheard of.
So, last night only Gao Guang slept well as he had been on a twelve-hour flight, then kidnapped, and had gone through a series of life-and-death events. He couldn't have stayed up all night with the Captain and the others even if he wanted to.
Now they had to leave in two separate cars, the Captain's car in the lead with Rubber driving the following car.
They didn't take the main road but followed a small path that led away from San Diego. As the outside scenery turned desolate, Gao Guang saw a car parked by the side of the road with a man and a woman standing beside it.
They had arrived at the transaction location. The Captain was the first to get out, waved at Gao Guang's car, and then Gao Guang helped Arturo out of the car.
This was the first time Gao Guang had seen the Captain up close and without any obstacles. He looked to be in his forties, with a typical Caucasian face, brown hair, and a well-maintained, sturdy figure.
The woman rushed over and embraced Arturo. Tears flowed before words, while Arturo, overwhelmed with emotion, said, "Mom..."
A touching scene of a mother and son reunion, even Gao Guang felt moved, but the Captain and the man by the car just watched coldly. The man pointed toward the car door, saying, "Get in."
Once Arturo and his mother had finally gotten into the car and closed the door, the Captain coldly began, "Peter, now it's time to discuss..."
Before he could finish, Arturo rolled down the window and said to Gao Guang outside, "Thank you, I will..."
The middleman named Peter sternly said in Spanish, "Shut up, be quiet and wait!"
The window was promptly rolled up. Peter ran his hands through his hair and switched to English, saying, "This guy has screwed me over. Okay, now let's talk about our business."
Peter didn't look Mexican. He waved his hand dismissively and said with resignation, "I didn't know Sanchez was with the Zeta. Really, if I had, I wouldn't have taken this mediator job. Sorry about Wild Bull getting killed, but my Tijuana business is also ruined because the Zeta will surely come after me, buddy, my losses are huge."
