Chapter 2: Cafeteria
The man was dragging what seemed to be an unconscious woman and every few moments I saw him look around the area.
'Is he gonna help her? Hmm… actually, I don't think he can.'
After watching for a moment more, I realized that she was probably not in a healthy state. The extremely lopsided neck and discoloration around the area were dead giveaways.
The corpse had several other signs that whoever this woman was didn't have it so easy. Small portions of her shirt and pants had a couple of holes torn into them. Her forearms had large red spots as if she was pummeled there.
'What's this man going to do with a corpse then? C-could it be? Necrophilia?! Uh, maybe I'll just go with him being one of those things instead.'
From their clothing I could discern that the man was a manager meanwhile the corpse of a woman should've been someone who worked in the offices.
With how massive our production plant was it wasn't reasonable to know every manager of every section, especially if they weren't near you.
I had seen the manager before, but since his section was quite far away, I had never interacted with him. I only heard a couple of things about him, both of which were bad. He was a bit of a pervert, and last I heard, he might have been starting to stalk someone. I think his name was Todd.
The woman he was dragging was completely new to me, but if she worked in the office then it made sense.
'I wonder… is that the person he was stalking before? Maybe necrophilia isn't off the table then.'
Todd swiveled his head around and finally, he seemed to reach his destination, a small break room.
While still dragging the woman with one hand he open the door with the other. When the door closed behind them the silence of the place felt more enhanced.
'Okay… well guess I'll leave Todd to himself. It's kinda fucked up what he's doing, but I'll take this as a wake-up call as to how bad the situation is. If a man can become this depraved this quickly then he believes there really isn't anything that's going to uphold the law anymore. Guess those rumors were true then, I hope karma comes and bites his ass.'
A small part of me wants to do something, but I don't really gain anything nor would my work be permanent. The best outcome is that he doesn't do it while I'm around; the worst outcome is getting hurt.
Being a hero in many situations carries many risks. Honestly, I probably have a small hero complex, but that would only extend to situations where I know I could save them or at least think I have a high chance of succeeding. The woman here was already dead, if she were alive my "urge to save" would definitely have been significantly increased.
Just when I turned to leave…
"Ahhhh! Nn-aaahhh-..."
A scream filled with anguish, short and promptly cut off, reverbed slightly out from that break room.
Such a sudden change of events made me freeze.
I felt my eyes tremble as I anxiously peered at the break room door. An almost unnoticeable crack echoes from the room. A few moments go by before the door opens, revealing a somewhat familiar figure.
Yet, at the same time, several points were considered odd and the more you noticed them more you would feel a strange sense that something wasn't right. I was getting a shiver down my back as the uncanny valley settled in deeper.
It was the woman I thought to be dead earlier, but she seemed alive, in a sense, now. The crook in her neck had somewhat straightened out, but the discoloration remained although a little faded. Her eyes had life to them, yet it felt as if that life didn't belong to her. Her jaw drooped a little unnaturally to one side. Her forearms were less discolored as well, but for some reason, they were elongated and almost reached her knees.
I stared until I realized…
'Fuck, what if it sees me!?'
Immediately, I ducked down in hopes that I was fast enough. Eventually, I started hearing it shuffling away and with every measured breath I thought about how far it was depending on the sound.
After 10 seconds of silence, I peek out once again and sigh with relief. I really wanted to see what happened to Todd. I know curiosity killed the cat, but people usually never finish that quote. "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." I need to know how damaging these things are, maybe there's something useful in there as well.
'Gore won't affect me too much, I've seen liveleak before. Bodies take a while before they start to smell too, so I shouldn't start gagging either. There's probably also a general morbid curiosity.'
Gathering up some courage I made my way over with slow and methodical steps. I kept my eyes on the direction I last heard that creature went intending to book it if I saw even a glimpse of it.
Once I entered the room I was a little surprised by how little blood was spilled. Honestly, I had been expecting the room to basically be painted in blood and a decapitated head with how abruptly his scream ended.
Instead, his body was relatively intact as it lay limply on the floor. His jaw was similarly dislocated like that creature before, which probably explained the abrupt stop of his scream. As for the crack it probably had to do with the fact that the back of his head was now touching his spine.
It seemed my first guess as to why he brought the body here was right too as his pants were hung on a chair nearby. If I were to find anything useful it would probably be in those very pants so I searched.
In his left pocket was his badge and keys. Every employee in the plant had a badge that let them in, some though, gave different access to places. I took both and stuffed them in my jacket; even though I didn't know what the keys opened I took them just in case.
In the right pocket was his phone which I thought wasn't too useful so I left it. I did take his belt though, I don't know what to do with it at the moment, but I was sure I would probably use it at some point.
There wasn't anything else in the room that interested me so I left and stayed near a wall along the way.
'So, these things do take over bodies? It also seems to be mending the wounds on them, but that doesn't quite explain why its jaw was dislocated. Does it also mimic the damage it inflicts on others?
Also, how did it manage to stretch out the body's proportions? Is it reshaping the body to its whims?
Where does their strength come from? Can humans normally break someone's neck like that?
Where is the plant security? Have they all died already?
So many questions and so few answers.'
After another minute of anxious walking, I was finally close to the cafeteria near my area.
The first thing I noticed was the bodies, numerous and scattered all around. The area was still and quiet as the scene seemed more and more vivid in mind. I gripped the hammer I had just a little bit tighter as I walked softly through the mass.
There were several dozen bodies each of which had a multitude of wounds. Taking a deeper look I was starting to differentiate what was what.
A third of the bodies looked unnaturally disproportionate, clearly defining them in my mind as whatever I saw earlier was. Many of those bodies had bruises, lacerations, and a good number even had gunshot wounds to them.
'Wait! I slept through gunshots?! How fucking tired was I? Aren't I normally a light sleeper?'
As I looked at the mimic bodies, I noticed a large variation between them.
Some had longer arms like the one I saw earlier, some longer legs, bulkier muscles, shorter variations, and uneven shoulder heights.
There were 3 that I saw that at first glance wouldn't even induce that uncanny valley feeling, yet as I peered closer that feeling hit me immediately as I noticed the changes: an impossible ear-to-ear grin, significantly small ears, and a pupil that almost took up the space of the entire eye.
It's possible that these could have just been people with fairly unique mutations, but it was clear that the people who were held up in this cafeteria didn't think so.
The people who fell here still had their weapons near their bodies. Many had random tools like those in the toolbox I searched and a few had random bullshit like a body on a nearby railing that had a mop, a body with a tray, and another with a bent spatula.
Most of the wounds on the humans were bruises, but none seemed as egregious as the ones inflicted on Todd. Most of the people only took a beating before going down, except for 2. One of them had some cuts on the body and the other had a gunshot near their abdomen, but nevertheless still took a beating.
'Is it possible that the one I saw earlier was stronger than the rest of these ones? Is it because newborn mimics are stronger and get weaker over time? Are they like some zombies I know where fresh infected are more aggressive and faster?'
I looked into the main room of the cafeteria to see even bodies scattered about, but there were 2 that I took special notice of. They both wore all black with bright yellow letters across their shirts that read security.
One lay on their back and the other was on their chest. The one on their back was closer to me, but I saw no trace of their weapon, in fact even their utility belt was missing.
I walked to the other one and was hopeful as I saw his utility belt still around his waist, but his gun was still nowhere to be found. I quietly sighed as I went to flip him over for that utility belt of his.
Yet, as I did I found quite the nice surprise. A pistol was clenched in the hand hidden under his stomach.
I quickly took the utility belt off him and strapped it onto my waist before examining the gun I found. It was a Glock 17, the slide wasn't locked back so I pressed the mag release. When the mag popped out I caught it with my other hand and checked the remaining rounds. There was 6 left in the mag and when I pulled the slide back a little I saw the head of another.
I slid the mag back in and with 7 rounds I put the gun into my newly acquired holster. I check the rest of the belt and the only things that was on it was a flashlight, radio, notepad with pen, a set of keys, and 3 empty pouches, 2 of which were used to hold spare mags.
The bodies trailed into a nearby hallway that turned into another office, but I decided to keep looking around to see whether or not Robert happened to be one of them.
Of course, I hoped that none of them were, but I had to check regardless. After every body I checked I kept seeing more familiar faces sprawled limply across the floor.
After the 7th one, I started becoming numb to the effect, it wouldn't help me if I became distraught every time and the shock value lowered significantly after the first one.
Once I looked at everybody in the seating area I looked toward the kitchen where a few more bodies were.
I pushed through the swinging door and saw that the bodies were worse for wear with a number of cuts and lacerations. Of the 4 hold up here, none matched Robert's characteristics to which I quietly had a sigh of relief.
*Tunk!*
Suddenly, a metallic sound rang from behind me like someone had just bumped into metal.
I quickly spun my body around poised to bash whatever made that sound behind me, but I saw nothing. The only thing there was a few metal lockers positioned by the door I came through.
Though I was full of adrenaline, I steadied myself as I approached. The lockers were the only things that could have made the sound and with nothing currently in sight, it must have been something inside them.
Sure, I could have left whatever made that noise, but it came out later while I still believed it was contained, that's on me. I had to eliminate the threat as both a way to gain a bit of experience fighting the creatures and so I could be certain I was safe.
If others could fight them and beat a good number of them then it means they aren't invincible. Perhaps this was a horrible idea and I had greatly overestimated myself, but I had a little bit of pride. I had trained in martial arts before, mainly swords, daggers, knives, spears, and hand-to-hand. Granted, the hammer I had fit in none of those categories and they were against normal humans, but still!
I gripped the handle of the first locker and pulled it open to reveal nothing. My nerves relaxed for a second before I looked at the second locker with the same swift action I once again revealed nothing.
Now onto the final locker, I tensed up a bit knowing at this point that whatever made that sound had to of been coming from here. I primed the hammer in my hand, ready to smash down on whatever creature was inside.
I wrapped my fingers around the handle and with a swift motion, I pulled it open.
There crouched on the base of the locker was a trembling woman who was covering her head. For a moment I didn't know what to do. Her eyes looked up at me and before I could say a word she let out a fearfully surprised, "Ahh!"
She didn't scream for long though and it wasn't too loud either, though the silence felt like it amplified it.
