Chapter 16: 16. Hell Wolves’ Den.
"Done," Diana said as she stepped away from her kill, which was slowly disintegrating into ashes.
"Is everyone okay?" Aurora emerged from her hiding spot and checked on Diana to see if she had any injuries.
"I'm fine, Your Highness," Diana said before immediately turning towards Aaron. "These beasts are stragglers, and there's bound to be more nearby."
Aaron wiped his blade clean on a leaf before glancing at the fields ahead of them. "Let's keep moving," and everyone trailed behind him as he moved forward.
The three went deeper into the farmlands, and they passed through several overgrown fields and abandoned buildings.
Due to the high density of mana in their current spot, plants grew a lot faster there than in places where there was a low amount of mana in the air, and since there hadn't been a single farmer to till the land, the grasses had grown very high and thick in less than a week.
The three continued to move around the farmlands, but while they were walking, Glimmer suddenly paused, and her ears twitched as she let out a low growl.
"What is it?" Aaron asked as he saw Glimmer making two holographic projections of herself.
The two fox holograms stormed ahead, and Aaron noticed that he could also see what the holograms were seeing. Later on, a system notification popped up in front of him.
However, what he saw sent chills down his spine.

"What's wrong?" Diana asked after noticing the look on Aaron's face.
"I think there are more Hell Wolves up ahead, probably a pack of them, and it seems like their Alpha might be among them as well.
"An Alpha?" Aurora whispered in fear. Her face turned pale the moment she heard that an alpha might be nearby. "There's no way we can fight against that ourselves."
At first, she was puzzled by how Aaron could detect that there were Hell Wolves close to them, but the moment she heard that the alpha was close, her heart began to pound like never before.
"We're not here to fight it," Aaron replied. "We're just here to clear the area and get out, but if we can take down any stragglers without alerting the alpha, then we'll do it."
"And if the alpha notices us?" Diana asked.
"Then we'll retreat as fast as we can."
The three moved cautiously, with Glimmer leading the way. They encountered another pair of beasts, but Diana and Aaron easily took care of them.
Meanwhile, Aurora continued to collect herbs along the way. Her hands were trembling, but she didn't let that stop her from grabbing any valuable herb nearby.
As they approached the pack, the sound of guttural growls grew louder, but Aaron motioned for everyone to stop scanning the area. The beasts were clustered near a small barn, and everyone could see them from where they were, based on how big the wolves were.
"We need to draw them away," Aaron whispered before turning towards Diana. "Diana, you and I will create a distraction. Your Highness, stay hidden with Glimmer and be prepared to retreat if things go south."
Aurora nodded in response. She wanted to say something to them, but Aaron and Diana had left to carry out their plans.
Aaron and Diana moved to opposite sides of the barn before throwing rocks to draw the beasts' attention. Three of the wolves broke off from the rest, and they snarled as they moved towards Diana.
Meanwhile, Aaron stepped out before swinging his sword to draw another two wolves in his direction. He focused on their movements and tried to use their aggression against them. Glimmer suddenly appeared out of nowhere and clenched down on the heels of one of the beasts before darting away.
As for Diana, she easily dispatched her three opponents quickly while Aaron landed a heavy blow on one of the beasts, and it collapsed with a pained yelp, but before the three wolves could regroup, a deep roar echoed through the clearing, and everyone watched as the Alpha emerged from the barn.
It was massive, and it easily dwarfed the other beasts they had fought so far. Its eyes glowed brighter than the others, and it seemed to be more intelligent than the rest as well.
"Aaron, we need to go. Now," Aurora called out to Aaron with a shaky voice.
Meanwhile, the Alpha's gaze locked onto Aaron with its lips curling into a snarl, and it charged towards him faster than anything Aaron had ever faced before.
"Move!!!" Diana shouted and stepped in to intercept the beast's attack. Her blade clashed against the alpha's claws, but the sheer force of the impact sent her stumbling.
Aaron lunged forward with his sword aimed at the alpha's side, but the beast twisted and swiped at his shoulder, which sent him flying away.
Pain shot through his shoulder, but he forced himself to stand. "Glimmer, do it!!!!" Aaron shouted, and Glimmer barked in understanding. She darted forward, and her fur shimmered brighter than ever before, which helped to disorient the alpha for a split second. It wasn't much, but it was enough.
"Fall back, now!" Aaron yelled, and everyone retreated. The alpha roared in anger, and his roar echoed behind them as they disappeared into the bushes.
By the time they reached the town's gates, Aaron and the girls were battered and exhausted. Aaron leaned heavily against the gate while breathing heavily. Glimmer curled at his feet, but her eyes were sharp and alert as she looked around to see if they were being followed.
"That was close," Diana said, and everyone nodded in agreement, still trying to catch their breath.
"We survived, and that's what matters," Aaron replied with a steady voice despite how exhausted he was.
"Here, drink this," Aurora handed him a potion.
He took it and thanked her before drinking it. The moment he drank the potion, Aaron could feel the cool liquid soothing the pain in his shoulder, then he turned towards the girls. "We'll go back, we'll regroup, we'll come up with a better plan, and then we'll finish what we started."
