Chapter 21: 21. Encountering A New Magical Beast.
The next morning, Aaron sat around with the girls in the dining hall right after they had eaten breakfast.
The map of the dark forest was laid out on the table and marked with different colored pins.
"We've stabilized the farmlands," Aaron began. "And now, it's time to secure the dark forest. It's full of resources we'll need, like the herbs we'll need for potions and various other materials needed for rebuilding the farmlands."
Listening to this, Aurora frowned. "The dark forest is not only known for the demonic beasts roaming around it but there have also been reports of magical beasts being corrupted by the high amount of dark energy in that forest. I'm sure you know what happens if we stay in that forest for too long."
"Yes, we'll become corrupted by the miasma and will be no different from a demonic beast."
Aurora nodded her head in agreement. "Precisely, so how do you expect us to eliminate the demonic beasts roaming around the forest when it's filled with dangerous corrupted mana?"
"We can purify it."
"What?"
Aaron pointed to a spot on the map. "I believe there's an elven shrine in this place here."
"A shrine?"
"Yes, it's been abandoned for years but I think if we find it, we should be able to…"
"..... To purify the forest using the shrine," Aurora muttered to herself and Aaron nodded in agreement.
"Exactly, but do you think it's possible?"
"It should, but we'll have to find the shrine first."
"We will," Aaron stated confidently.
"And how are you certain that we can find the shrine? We don't even know if this shrine actually exists," Diana expressed her doubts.
"It does."
"And how do you know that?" Aurora asked.
"It was written in my father's journal." Aaron had been studying a lot of recorded information about the barony and its history.
This was what he had been doing last night before Aurora entered Damien's study.
He found out an elven shrine had been built in the forest a few years ago, to help tackle a problem Damien's father had faced in the forest.
The barony had been facing a major crisis at the time and if it hadn't been for the shrine, the barony wouldn't have continued to exist till now.
This was also the reason why Damien decided to provide shelter to the elves when all the other nobles hesitated to welcome them into their territory.
"Very well, if we're going into the forest, then we need a solid plan," Diana pointed out and Aaron replied.
"We'll split into two teams. Glimmer and I will clear several paths and deal with any threats while Your Highness and Diana will focus on gathering resources and if we encounter anything we can't handle, then we'll regroup and retreat. Is that okay?"
Aurora hesitated but nodded. "Yes, but we need to be careful when venturing deeper into the forest."
"We will," Aaron replied and the meeting came to an end. Everyone left the dining hall to make preparations for their journey into the forest.
During the meeting, Luna had been sitting in the room, patting Glimmer on her lap, but when the meeting came to an end, she decided to leave with everyone else.
Initially, Luna had a lot she had wanted to say, but she decided to keep them to herself and to support her big brother in whatever he wanted to do.
A few hours later, Aaron, Diana, and Aurora arrived at the dark forest. Aaron adjusted the pouch he had with him while Diana and Aurora made sure everything they needed was with them.
"Stay close," He said before glancing at the girls behind him. Diana nodded while her hand rested on her sword hilt and Aurora clutched her pouch of potions with a determined expression on her face.
As for Glimmer, she sat beside Aaron and she couldn't wait to venture into the forest.
Diana stepped forward to stand beside Aaron while her eyes were still fixated on the large trees in front of them.
"I know we've been here before, but is it just me, or does this place feel different this time," Diana muttered loud enough for Aaron to hear.
Aaron felt it too. He could feel that the dark energy had spread towards their current spot as well, but they couldn't back down now. Their main objective was to exterminate the demonic beasts in the forest and find the elven shrine, and that was exactly what Aaron wanted them all to focus on.
"Stay close," He said as he walked into the forest. Aurora and Diana followed right after, but because Aurora could also feel the minute miasma in the air, she decided to cast a spell that created a magical barrier around them, preventing the miasma from affecting them.
Although the amount of miasma currently in the air couldn't cause any harm to them because of how little it was in this part of the forest, Aurora decided to cast the spell because she didn't want to risk any of them becoming affected by the energy.
The mysterious dark energy that was known to transform magical beasts into demonic beasts was called miasma.
No one knew exactly where it came from or why it could affect beasts, humans, and even elves, the way that it did, but everyone knew that this dark energy was the cause of it.
The mysterious dark energy could also be called corrupted mana or miasma because it had been known to evolve and strengthen demonic beasts just like
mana-empowered magical beasts.
Aaron and the girls continued to move within the forest, but while they did, they suddenly heard the faint rustling sound of leaves in front of them, and everyone froze, but Glimmer let out a soft growl.
Aaron and Diana grabbed a hold of their swords as they both took a fighting stance before the incoming beast, but to their surprise, a stag-like beast with brown fur and large antlers appeared out of the bushes.
The stag was over six feet tall and its antlers crackled with electricity the moment it spotted Aaron and the girls.
