Chapter 52 - A Tournament Full of Unfairness
People were highly interested in the Legendary High-Tier System’s Twitch-sponsored Lesik (Legendary Six) Streamer Tournament, which was about to begin soon.
As soon as the broadcast of Kim Jin-hoo, the commentator with the striking black hat, started, viewers quickly flocked to it.
Not a single streamer from the eight teams of forty participants had started streaming, as if they’d all planned to hold off. Meanwhile, the other commentator, Lesik specialist streamer “Resin,” was in his broadcasting booth.
Two people were moving their lips as if conversing, but no sound came through—perhaps they hadn’t turned on the mic.
After a few minutes, they nodded while holding a stack of papers on the table in front of them.
“Ah, mic test. One, two. One, two, three.”
The voice of Jin-hoo, wearing a black hat, came through the broadcast, and the 50,000 viewers who’d already gathered started typing excitedly, hoping the event was finally beginning.
Unlike Baraa’s stream, where her weak computer often struggled, Jin-hoo’s broadcast was running smoothly.
“All right! Then, we’ll now begin the Legendary Six, Lesik Streamer Tournament…”
“Let’s start~~!!!!”
At the simultaneous shouts of the two commentators, dozens of streams popped online.
-Bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang!!
-Whoaaa!!!
-The door is open!! Charge!!!!
“Yes~ welcome, everyone! Good evening. Today, for the tournament commentary in about an hour, I’m Kim Jin-hoo, and…”
“I’m Resin, a Lesik YouTuber and Twitch streamer!”
After the two men introduced themselves, the chat was filled with questions about the tournament.
Veteran streamer Kim Jin-hoo handled it effortlessly, without a trace of embarrassment, as if he was used to it.
-Who’s participating in today’s tournament??
-What map is it?
“We’ll answer questions after we finish explaining the tournament setup, so please hold tight.”
“Ahem… Then let me explain the tournament schedule… The tournament will start at 9 PM on March 29, which is about an hour from now! A total of eight teams are participating, and it will proceed in a tournament bracket format!”
-? So if they lose, they’re just out?
“Yes, it’s a single-elimination. You have to keep winning to get to the top. A simple three-win streak should be easy, right?”
-Hahaha LOL
-But aren’t there too many noobs this time? Isn’t it going to be unbalanced? I heard an ex-pro is participating.
-Yeah, that’s true… There are two ex-pros playing, but it’s supposed to be a casual tournament…
“There is a remedy for that—pistols only.”
Even though Lesik was known as a great game, it couldn’t avoid criticism. No game system could be universally liked. Some people disliked it, while others enjoyed it.
However, one thing that most players disliked but deemed necessary in Lesik was…
Headshots.
If you got shot in the head, you died. It was basic common sense that applied in the game as well.
But Lesik took it to the extreme.
For example, if Player A spotted Player B from a distance and started firing their AK-47 wildly, Player B could still win by landing a single headshot, even with just a pistol.
This seemingly fair but frustratingly frequent reversal annoyed players, though they also found a thrill in the intensity.
So, a rule was introduced: players classified as experienced were banned from using primary weapons.
“For players ranked Gold 1 or higher, the use of primary weapons is prohibited. This is because, unlike usual tournaments, there are quite a few first-time players in this one.”
-If you’re Gold 1 or above, you could probably slice through newbies with a knife LOL
-LMAO
-Who’s the highest-ranked player?
-“Gunkoo,” an ex-pro. He’s Diamond 2.
-Eek… A monster…!!
-A legit Diamond player is here.
-What about the next one?
-Another ex-pro, but I don’t remember his name. In third place is Baraa-noona… She’s Plat 1… When you compare, he’s just a beast…
“As Resin mentioned, the penalty is using pistols only, and the maps are the Mansion, Bank, and Oregon, as previously announced. Teams were formed based on mutual agreement among the streamers. If anyone fails to show up or forfeits within the allotted time, it will be considered a victory by default. Now, onto the main prize.”
Jin-hoo clicked his mouse, and the screen changed to show a computer on the website of the Legendary High-Tier System.
The background was purple, and the computer case was also purple, with one side transparent, allowing a view of the components inside.
“This computer is scheduled for release in a few weeks. It’s a concept model being pre-released in collaboration with Twitch, and it’s our grand prize. So, yeah, it’s basically a sponsored advertisement, and there are several perks included.”
“Is that all…?”
“Yes, well… Then, time for the tedious Q&A~”
“Ohhh…”
“Meow…”
I patted Strawberry, who was licking my arm apologetically after turning it into a scratched-up mess from the vaccine shot.
“It’s okay… I was too careless…”
I was supposed to distract Strawberry to help the vet give her the shot, but while scratching her head, she flipped onto her back, which ruined the plan.
Strawberry saw the sharp needle and freaked out.
Though I held onto her, she thrashed her tiny claws around, scratching my arm. Normally, her little claws wouldn’t even scratch my arm, but my skin was too delicate now.
Finally, after some struggle, the vaccination was over, and Strawberry looked downcast as she saw the faint red marks on my arm.
It was a minor injury that would disappear soon, but Strawberry licked my hand apologetically.
“Ow…”
My younger sister didn’t know about this, so I applied a bandage to my arm alone.
“There~ All better~”
Strawberry, unable to find the bandaged injury, looked around my arm.
“The tournament’s starting soon, so let’s get ready.”
I set Strawberry on the chair and went to fetch a glass of water.
“Hmm hmm…”
As I watched the commentators’ broadcast for a few more minutes, I received a message on Discord. The server was called “Baraa Upgrading Her Computer.”
Ding ding-ding-ding-ding
“…Hello.”
Inside the oddly named Discord server were four members hastily put together as a team.
“Nice to meetcha! I’m so nervous about the tournament today!”
“Hello, it’s almost time.”
“Yes! Chocoa…! How was your day?”
I asked Chocoa about her day, but it seemed uneventful.
She said she slept late after doing her assignment, briefly played a rhythm game, watched a cat video, ate, and then just sat down at her computer.
It was an ordinary story, but thinking about Chocoa doing all that made me smile uncontrollably, and then I pulled myself together.
“So, is it starting soon?”
“I think so.”
“Let’s stick to the plan and get into Lesik now!”
Yoon Gae was louder than usual today, likely because it was tournament day, but I’d already adjusted my volume settings, so it didn’t bother me.
However, Ninima and Gunkoo hadn’t adjusted theirs, judging by their slightly pained voices as they clicked their mouses.
“Meow.”
Strawberry, who was now big enough to stretch her tiny paws across my lap, was stretching out on my knee.
As I waited for the game to start, I stroked Strawberry’s back and watched the chat flow by.
I was beginning to recognize familiar usernames, along with many new ones.
The number of viewers was twice the usual. It seemed everyone was interested in the tournament.
With my mic muted, I spoke only to the viewers.
“Thank you all for coming today. As per the notice… Um… I’ll give a three-minute buffer and… turn on the camera…”
For my current computer, maintaining stability wasn’t an option. Even just turning it on and off was a struggle.
“Hmm…”
The tournament rules required me to turn on my camera, but the only way to do that was through my phone.
Using my phone would confirm my identity, but I wouldn’t be able to show the gameplay.
I could go to a PC bang, but I’d only been dragged there a few times by friends and didn’t like the crowdedness or cigarette smell, so it wasn’t something I wanted to do.
-Ack LOL crappy computer LOL LOL LOL
-The only streamer who can’t play if they confirm their identity
Just then, a discussion started in Discord about taking a short buffer time to get ready, so I quickly unmuted and asked in a slightly urgent voice.
“Um… If I turn on my camera, my computer might crash. What should I do…?”
“…”
“…I sincerely hope you win the computer this time.”
“Thank you!”
With Chocoa’s cheer(?), I felt like I could take everyone down with a pistol if needed, though it didn’t solve the problem.
-Hahaha
-Only ten minutes left!
Gunkoo- One of our team members can’t use their camera, what should we do?
-???
-The strongest player appears.
-Is it age-based?
-You’re… really… mean…
The commentators, busy finalizing preparations, noticed the chat.
“Camera… Ah…”
-Why do I feel like I know who it is?
-Noona… has a crappy computer…
“…As long as they can prove it’s them playing during the game, it’s fine. If someone else is playing, it’ll be an automatic disqualification.”
The commentators weren’t just there for commentary and broadcast; they also had to handle forfeits, absences, and enforce penalties on teams breaking the rules.
“Then, with no further issues, let’s proceed with the match bracket.”
The screen changed to a ladder generator prepared in advance, and the match-ups were determined to the viewers’ anticipation.
“We have Team CopperIsHere, Team WorldPeace, Team OutOfIdeas, the Favorites, Team LesikCrushers, RPGCameBackFrom, Baraa Upgrading Her Computer, and Team StockMaster.”
