Chapter 21: First Male Friend
The sky had started to darken by the time Jack stepped out of Noble Collection. The late autumn evening cast a golden hue over the city, a gentle breeze swirling through the streets. After a long day of work, he was looking forward to meeting up with Samantha and Lena. They had planned to go shopping for groceries together.
He made his way toward the bus station, where they'd agreed to meet. As he approached, he saw Lena first, standing casually with her arms folded. She wore a blue sundress that seemed to sway lightly with the breeze, the color complementing her blonde hair, which was loosely tied back today. She looked around, her expression relaxed, but she brightened up the moment she spotted Jack.
"Hey!" Lena waved.
Jack returned her wave, smiling. "Hey, you beat me here."
Before he could say more, Samantha approached from the other side of the bus station, her presence instantly attract attention. She was dressed in a sharp, well-fitted business suit—navy with slim trousers and a white blouse underneath. Her purple hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail, emphasizing her sharp features.
"Sorry, work ran a bit late," Samantha said with a faint smile as she adjusted the strap of her leather bag.
"No problem, we're all here now," Jack said, greeting her with a nod.
After a brief discussion about whether to take the bus or walk, they unanimously decided to walk. The grocery market wasn't too far, and it was a pleasant evening, perfect for a stroll. As they walked, Jack found himself between the two women, enjoying the casual company. The streets around them were slowly filling with the soft glow of streetlights, casting long shadows as they passed by small shops and quiet cafes.
"So, you guys have any plans for the weekend?" Jack asked, keeping the conversation light at first.
Lena shrugged, her arms swinging at her sides as she walked. "Not really. I usually just hang out at home or maybe catch up on some shows."
Samantha chuckled softly, adjusting her ponytail. "I'll probably be buried in work emails as usual. It never really stops, even over the weekend."
Jack smiled at that, but his curiosity got the better of him. After a moment of silence, he decided to shift the conversation in a different direction—something a bit more personal. "You know, it's kinda surprising that both of you don't seem to be in relationships. I mean, you're two of the most beautiful women I've ever met, and yet… you're both single?"
Lena blushed slightly, her cheeks tinged pink under the streetlights. She tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear and gave a little laugh. "Well, I've had crushe before, but... I was always too shy to do anything about it. And back in school, I wasn't exactly... well, I didn't look like this."
Jack raised an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "What do you mean? You've always been good-looking, right?"
Lena gave him a sheepish smile, her eyes flicking to the ground for a moment. "Not exactly. I had a pretty awkward phase in high school—braces, frizzy hair, the whole deal. I didn't start looking like this until college."
Samantha chimed in with a teasing grin. "Now every boy in college has a crush on her."
Lena laughed, shaking her head. "Not every boy."
Jack nodded, thinking it made sense. With Lena's current beauty, it was no wonder she might've gotten attention later in life. But he still found himself more curious about Samantha, who seemed to have an air of confidence and independence that set her apart.
Turning his attention to her, Jack asked, "What about you, Samantha? I mean, you seem like the type that guys would chase after. But you've never been in a relationship either?"
Samantha glanced at him, her expression thoughtful as she considered how to answer. "I've just... never been interested in romance, to be honest. At least not during school or college. I was more focused on building my career. Most of my time went into studying, getting ahead. Relationships just weren't a priority for me."
Jack was a little taken aback by her honesty. "So... you've never been with anyone? Not even casually?"
Samantha shook her head, her ponytail swaying with the movement. "Nope. You're actually the first guy I've ever walked like this with, talked like this with. The first male friend I've ever had."
Jack blinked in surprise. He didn't expect that. "Seriously? I'm the first?"
She smiled slightly. "Yup. Feels weird to say it out loud, but yeah. I've always been pretty career-driven. It's just how I am."
He couldn't help but feel impressed, but also slightly puzzled. Samantha was beautiful, intelligent, and had a quiet charisma that surely must've caught the attention of someone over the years. Yet, here she was, telling him that he was her first male friend.
"That's... surprising," Jack admitted, scratching the back of his neck. "But I guess it makes sense, knowing how focused you are. You've probably been too busy for any of that romance or friends stuff."
Samantha gave a small, amused chuckle. "Exactly. Lena is first female friend."
Jack was suprised. Then he turned to Lena, curious if her experience was similar. "And you? Am I your first male roommate, or have you lived with guys before?"
Lena shook her head, her sundress swaying slightly as they walked. "No, you're the first guy I've lived with, but I've had male friends before. Back in school, I had a pretty close group of friends—some of them were guys. But after school, we all kind of lost touch. Life just got in the way, I guess. No relationship with any guy, and it would stay that for few years."
Jack nodded.
"So, I'm like... your last remaining male friend?" Jack joked, a smirk tugging at his lips.
Lena laughed, the sound light and cheerful. "Something like that. But hey, at least you're good company."
Samantha glanced at Jack, her expression softening a bit. "It's kind of nice, actually. Having someone to hang out with that isn't just another co-worker or business associate."
Jack smiled at that. "Yeah, it is. I didn't expect to enjoy living with roommates this much, but you two have been great so far."
They continued walking in companionable silence for a few minutes, the night air cool but pleasant. The grocery market was just ahead, its lights bright against the evening sky. The streets were bustling with people going about their evening errands, and the smell of street food wafted through the air.
As they neared the entrance, Jack spoke up again,"So, does this mean I'm officially the first guy to go grocery shopping with you too?"
Lena chuckled, holding the door open for them as they entered the market. "I guess so."
