Chapter 30 - Neighborly Harmony
The sun shone brightly, and the weather was great.
Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the rented room.
Meng Xu woke up early.
Mainly because he’d had enough sleep and had nothing else to do.
Today’s breakfast was abundant.
There were Kangshuaifu braised beef noodles, shrimp fish cake, shiitake chicken stew, and golden soup fatty beef… of course, without the preserved sauerkraut.
After finishing breakfast, Chairman Meng proficiently went through his morning hygiene routine, changed into a casual sports outfit, and washed his high-end suit to dry it on the balcony.
Everything felt as usual.
Satisfied that he hadn’t missed anything, Meng Xu picked up the weapons he had brought in the day before.
The baseball bat and the wrench.
Both weapons were battle-tested, the dried blood on them attesting to their achievements.
Meng Xu was very accustomed to using them, though he thought the baseball bat might be due for an upgrade. But for now, there was no better weapon, so he’d wait and see.
After tidying up, Meng Xu stretched and then stepped out of his home.
The neighbors’ enthusiasm was unstoppable. As soon as Meng Xu stepped out, he heard a series of ‘bang bang’ sounds from the neighbors’ house next door, seemingly something banging on the door. Familiar with the situation, Meng Xu cheerfully called out a ‘Good morning’ through the door before energetically heading downstairs.
It was the fourth day, and he had no idea what the current situation was.
Why hasn’t there been any rescue or establishment of a safe zone yet? Surely, there must be some form of quarantine by now.
As he reached the third floor, Meng Xu suddenly heard a rustling sound, like a security door turning.
“Huh?”
Meng Xu paused, then was greatly surprised.
Could zombies open doors now?
With that in mind, Meng Xu raised the wrench in his hand, ready to deal with whatever might come.
Soon, the security door of room 301 wobbled open, leaving a small gap. A disheveled middle-aged woman, looking extremely sloppy, peeked through, her eye observing Meng Xu.
Meng Xu recognized her. She was his downstairs neighbor with a son approximately in middle school.
Every night, her son played the piano, and on weekends, he saw her taking her son to classes. Because the soundproofing was poor, sometimes he could hear her scolding the child and the child’s crying.
Meng Xu remembered her particularly well because she once knocked on his door to complain about him playing games without headphones. Meng Xu had been perplexed as he played games quietly.
However…
Meng Xu noticed a hint of greed and excitement in her eyes.
【Occupation: Full-time Mom】
【Level: 4】
Reading the situation, Meng Xu realized she wasn’t a zombie. Instead, she was a level 4 full-time mom, yet…
Something still felt off to him.
Adjusting his stance, Meng Xu asked, “Aunt Zhao, why are you acting so sneaky? Did a burglar get in?”
“Xiao Meng, where are you off to?”
Aunt Zhao’s demeanor seemed a bit off, and she instinctively responded to Meng Xu’s voice.
“Me? I’m heading to the Bureau of Commerce, handling some paperwork.” Meng Xu replied kindly.
“You know, starting a company, the procedures can be a bit bothersome.”
“What’s going on with you, with your hair all messy? You should tidy up a bit. If I didn’t recognize you, I’d think a lunatic escaped from the asylum.”
Hearing Meng Xu’s genuine concern, Aunt Zhao seemed taken aback.
You’re calling me crazy?
Look at your state first, maybe you should treat yourself.
After a moment of daze, Aunt Zhao also gave a kind smile, “Xiao Meng, I just finished cooking. Would you like to come in and have a taste?”
She gestured for Meng Xu to enter.
Seeing this, Meng Xu was about to decline when a line of dazzling golden text suddenly appeared before his eyes.
【Creating harmonious neighborly relationships is a crucial step towards a perfect life. A perfect life requires kindness towards others! It seems Aunt Zhao on the third floor has some worries regarding her son. Go help resolve them.】
【Task Triggered: Resolve Aunt Zhao and Her Son’s Troubles.】
【Task Rewards: Points +2, Yuan +5000, Freely Allocatable Attribute Point +0.5, and a chance to obtain Aunt Zhao’s Career Recommendation Letter.】
Well, well.
Meng Xu couldn’t help but chuckle.
Such a good deal?
The first three rewards didn’t matter much. What caught his eye was the last one.
A profession recommendation letter!
Encouraged by this thought, Meng Xu straightened up, and casually said, “Alright, what’s for dinner?”
His tone was so natural, it felt as if he had walked into his own home.
Seeing Meng Xu so at ease, Aunt Zhao was momentarily stunned, then enthusiastically opened the door wide.
“Come in, come in!”
With such a warm welcome, Meng Xu stepped into the house.
Inside, the view broadened.
Meng Xu could see that the place was spotlessly clean, clearly benefiting from daily cleaning.
Though the floor was shiny and clean, Meng Xu could smell a faint scent of blood.
In the corners, there were some blood spatters.
Looking around, Meng Xu sat on the sofa and asked, “Auntie, where’s your son?”
“Have some water.”
Aunt Zhao poured a glass of water and placed it on the coffee table, giving a creepy smile, “You mean Xiaowei? He’s in his room playing on the computer… Would you like to check on him?”
“I’ll skip the water.”
Shaking his head, Meng Xu stood up and walked to Xiaowei’s bedroom door, finding it tightly closed.
He gently knocked on the door and immediately heard a growling sound from the other side.
It seemed Xiaowei had turned into a zombie.
Meng Xu understood instantly. Just then, he sensed a gust of wind behind him. Barely dodging in time, he saw Aunt Zhao wielding a heavy axe, her eyes bloodshot.
Her attempt to strike had failed, easily evaded by Meng Xu.
“Oh, Aunt Zhao, are you attacking me? That axe swing could’ve been attempted murder if it hit.”
Yawning, Meng Xu looked at Aunt Zhao and said, “But if I hit you with this wrench, it’ll be self-defense.”
Meng Xu’s nonsensical words didn’t deter Aunt Zhao, who appeared crazed, shouting, “My son is hungry and can’t eat food! Come on, Xiao Meng, come on! You have no family anyway, so come on!”
“My son usually only eats vegetables! Don’t worry, Xiao Meng, go play with my darling son!”
Shaking his head, Meng Xu responded, “Only eats vegetables? What? Is he a vegetarian and only eats coma patients?”
This crazy Aunt Zhao seemed mentally unstable.
Mental illness is really scary.
I’m glad I’m a normal person.
