Ch 171
The next morning, I caught Marianne from the academy training grounds to train and dragged her to the townhouse.
Marianne, who was standing in front of my mother in her training uniform, glared at me as if she was going to kill me, but I had no choice but to pretend not to notice.
And Marianne, who had heard her mother’s explanation, blushed uncharacteristically and waved her hands several times.
“But, Countess Ernhard. I am just, just a friend of Michael.”
“I know. I heard that Lady Philodendron is one of my son’s best friends and a strong comrade who will climb the Yuil Mountains together.”
“Huh? That’s, that’s right… but…”
Marianne glanced at me again, as if to ask if I really said that.
But it wasn’t something to argue about. What more could I say since I was already so upset? Even if I had a mouth, I couldn’t answer. I just nodded silently.
“This much is acceptable. Please let me thank Young-ae for helping my son with his debutante.”
“⋯Yes, Countess.”
Marianne, bowing politely and shyly, grabbed my arm and twisted it tightly before being dragged to her mother’s toilet. It didn’t hurt, but it was painful.
As it took a lot of time to prepare Marianne’s clothes, it became inconvenient to commute to and from the Academy dormitory. Her mother arranged for Marianne to have a room in the Valentia Townhouse until the debutante.
Since I would call Marianne over to the gym whenever I had spare time after making clothes, it was convenient to have the child close by.
Michael and Arstel were very excited to see Marianne perform her magic tricks. I thought it was amazing, but I didn’t stop them because I thought it would be fun and enjoyable for these young children to see it.
The end of the year was filled with trying on new clothes, working out, playing with the kids, trying on jewelry, working out, playing with the kids, trying on new clothes, working out, and playing with the kids.
So on the morning of the last day of the year.
I got into the carriage, holding Marianne’s hand, who was decked out in splendid splendor from head to toe. I was wearing a dress of pale blue silk with pale pink embroidery, and Marianne, who was wearing a dress of pale pink with deep purple embroidery and lace, looked like siblings when placed next to each other.
At first, he was bewildered and dragged around, but later on, he laughed heartily and got along well with my mother, his eyes shining as he looked at things like lace and frills.
Marianne let go of my hand, sat down, and adjusted her skirt, then burst into loud laughter. She laughed for a long time out of nowhere, and then finally opened her mouth to say something that was funny again.
“I feel like a princess.”
“⋯Princess Lucilla, the real princess, has a very fiery personality?”
“That includes that too. I’m such a total princess.”
I also laughed out loud at the refreshing answer.
The carriage ran toward the palace without a sound. Carriages of similar size ran shoulder to shoulder between the palace’s large doors that were wide open on both sides. It was quite a spectacle.
* * *
The hall I entered was huge, magnificent, and splendid. How could such a large relief be hung on the wall? I was looking around, my eyes drawn to the shining things, and then I noticed the eyes focused on me and Marianne, so I looked straight ahead.
The same-age intellectuals, each dressed up in their own way, were dancing to slow music.
I saw my comrades who had arrived from a distance first notice me and raise their hands to shoulder height in greeting. I tried to approach them, but Marianne let go of my hand and gently shoved my shoulder.
“Michael, you have to go over there.”
“now?”
“Yes, the spring dance will start in about twenty minutes, so Michael should be in the hall. Do you see over there? The boys are standing in a line.”
A boy and a girl with nervous expressions lined up on either side of the hall, leaving the center of the hall empty. They quickly understood and nodded.
I thought it was a good idea to bring along someone who had already experienced debutante.
“Then, have fun.”
“yes.”
I headed in the direction Marianne had pointed out. When I stood in a suitable empty spot, several children with nervous faces bowed their heads and knees slightly to greet me. I nodded my head in greeting and looked forward.
After waiting for a while, a familiar intro began.
When the girls came out alone and spun around, the boys followed them and asked them to dance. I was wondering what to do because the number of boys and girls didn’t match, but a few guys who were watching ran in and helped them pair up. Judging from their dancing skills and smiling faces, they didn’t seem like they were debuting this year.
Since there were many children running in and the numbers were not right, other children joined in one by one and walked together to the spring dance. The children who happened to hold hands with their seniors smiled shyly and walked diligently.
It was a new and interesting culture.
I also bowed politely to the child who lightly held my fingertips and walked away. It was quite a sight to see so many people walking at the same time to the music.
After three breaths, another child was supposed to take my hand.
The dance of spring and the dance of summer were dances that were performed with strangers. The partners changed countless times. It was a dance that barely touched the fingertips, so there was nothing awkward about it.
We just looked at each other, walked a few steps, turned our backs to each other, watched the spinning child so he didn’t fall, and then grabbed the hand of the next child.
The children who were shy and cowering while playing the spring dance were smiling brightly and dancing as if they were flying when the summer dance began. A few children made mistakes, but their partners corrected them and they were able to quickly find their place.
My mother used to say that there was no one in our blood family who didn’t like dancing.
Now I understand. That was right. It was fun. The gazes touching each other’s bodies were familiar, so there was no awkwardness. The faces of the children looking at each other and clapping to the same beat were filled with laughter.
The singing grew louder and louder, and the majestic sound of the instruments striking woke me up.
The next tune was sweeter and more mysterious. It was an autumn dance. The children who had been watching this dance with smiling faces came rushing out alone.
The kids who came out alone asked each other to dance. Some were shy and ran to the outskirts of the hall. Some kids even grabbed the hands of their close friends.
It was fun, but I felt embarrassed to hang out with the kids, so I tried to get away, but someone grabbed my hand.
“⋯Senior?”
“I got permission from your partner, don’t worry.”
The gentle voice that was ringing in my ear was familiar. It was that guy, Ruber.
When I looked around, I saw Marianne holding Jenny’s hand, winking with one eye closed.
I looked around quickly, worried that I might be bothering Louver. I saw a few boys and girls holding hands. I noticed that they were close friends holding hands, and only then did I feel relieved.
I supported him with my thumb on the wide spot behind Louver’s waist. Still, since we had been practicing together all along, it didn’t feel awkward to start walking together as soon as the dance started. I walked as if the outside of my knee was brushing against the outside of the child’s knee.
Maybe because there were a lot of people, our bodies were a little closer than during practice.
I felt a gaze that would not leave my face. As soon as I raised my head, our eyes met. Without realizing it, my mouth opened again and searched for a reason.
“why.”
“⋯No, I just⋯. I like it.”
What?
The laughter of children mixed with the sound of the large drums and the whistling of wind instruments. I helped Ruber turn around.
It was heartbreaking to see the children laughing at him.
The Autumn Dance was a gorgeous dance that prayed for abundance and fertility, so the movements were large and refreshing. As I looked at Ruber’s face, which was drawn closer as if he were jumping into my arms even though we had kept our distance from each other, I felt embarrassed for no reason.
When the soft melody of the winter dance began, I wanted to quit and leave the hall, but when I saw Ruber looking at me with sparkling eyes, I swallowed a sigh. I obediently walked in the direction the child led me.
at that time.
A sharp sensation ran down my spine. My gaze quickly turned around.
Two young men standing on one side came into view. A white-clad man with golden hair that sparkled like a chandelier, and a black-clothed man with light purple hair that was neatly combed and tied up.
Hwagyeong is unmanned.
The cold murderous spirit disappeared in an instant. I walked as Ruber led me, hiding my expression on his shoulder. I hugged the waist of the child in my hand tightly. I did so even though I knew that the child was panicking and holding my shoulder.
I realized too late that I was acting like a mother hiding her young from the gaze of a wild beast.
“⋯Why, why are you like that?”
“No. Who cares?”
“⋯Huh?”
I held the flustered Louver back in place and walked with him to the familiar tune. My heart, which had been throbbing just a moment ago, calmed down. I glanced again at the direction they were standing.
“Is the author Wesley Kiadris?”
“Oh, yeah. ⋯You came with your brother.”
I was a man who had killed many people. I could immediately tell the murderous intent and killing intent of a person even after decades had passed. It made me seethe.
Richard may not know it, but Wesley Kiadris has no intention of leaving the boy Ruber alone. Even if he can’t touch him now, he will someday.
As my gaze continued to rest on them, Louver leaned close to my ear and whispered.
“⋯Should we stop?”
“No, no. I was just curious.”
Louver buried his head in my shoulder. I gently patted the child’s back and soothed him. As the dance was coming to an end, I didn’t feel awkward because I often saw other children standing like us, supporting each other’s bodies, trying to catch their breath from exhaustion.
The first to turn his gaze was Wesley Kiadris. He whispered something softly in Richard’s ear, and the two young men moved away. They came to see me, I thought.
I wondered how Wesley would evaluate me.
How would a common person who embraced his child to protect him have looked to the eyes of a genius?
I was newly distressed at the fact that I had neglected my training while running around here and there.
