Ch 175
The rest of the vacation was spent trying to appease the two little ones who were angry at their mischievous older brother for leaving them for two weeks even though they had come all the way to the capital.
I dressed up from head to toe once again for my younger siblings who were very upset that I didn’t let them see their debutante.
They walked around the townhouse banquet hall together, and sometimes played music and danced. At first, they held hands and danced, but later they put their hands on each other’s shoulders and swayed.
We barely got forgiveness after playing with the children until they were exhausted and out of breath.
He also gave several artifacts to Marianne, who came to him to return the dress. Among the rings and necklaces he had received as birthday presents, he had given them to her with permission from her parents, including some that had spells for keeping her warm or cold.
Marianne won her mother’s favor by repeatedly promising that she would repay the favor. I thought it was enough as long as the child was not hurt, but I did not refuse in advance.
January passed quickly, and a new semester began.
It was a more relaxed start than ever before, since I had already set my schedule in advance last semester. I felt empty without Louver coming to interfere with my schedule.
I sat down at the table where the children were making their schedules and looked over the syllabus together.
I had already scheduled advanced swordsmanship classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, private lessons with Maelo Sanson on Monday and Tuesday, and private lessons with Douglas Mustang on Thursday and Friday.
The kids were very disappointed to hear that on Wednesday afternoons, as usual, they would be cramming in a lesson on the genealogy of the empire from Calypse Agrigent, and then spending time with Wilton Roberts.
“Aren’t there any classes we can take together in the morning? Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are free.”
“Usually, I take major classes in the morning and non-major classes in the afternoon. But I can’t tell Michael to take academic classes. He does have a poetry class on Monday, though⋯.”
“hmm.”
Poetry? I had no talent for reciting sijo. It was nonsense. I shook my head. However, Ivan quickly accepted Jenny’s words.
“It seems okay… How about the business management class? There’s a store management class in the morning. You learn the accounting methods needed to manage multiple stores, and how to hire talented people.”
“Okay.”
“How are your law school classes, Michael? The Criminal Law class is on Mondays and Wednesdays⋯.”
“What can I do with what I learned?”
“It would be a great help in life if I knew it. What if I suddenly get involved in a criminal case?”
“No, you have to make sense.”
I looked around at the children who were joking around with narrowed eyes in disbelief.
Everyone laughed mischievously, as if it was just a joke. Among the children, Marianne thrust a piece of paper in front of my nose. Her excited eyes sparkled like a puppy seeing snow for the first time.
“Understanding the Circle! Do you want to hear this? You learned how to deploy the Ice Magic Formula in your first year, Michael. This sounds good to you, doesn’t it?”
“⋯Yes?”
It wasn’t that strange.
First, I took what was handed to me and read it. It was Professor Angela Sting’s class. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. The timing was perfect.
The ice magic formula I learned under her guidance was now so familiar that I could perform it in less than 5 seconds. Marianne noticed that I was being ticklish and smiled cutely.
“It’s a basic class, but I’ll take it since it’s Professor Angela Sting’s class. I’ll have to go back and forth to the Ministry of Magic, but if the afternoon class is private tutoring, I can probably spare some time for lunch. Surely Professor Sanson and Professor Mustang won’t give me lunch time?”
“⋯Hmm. What class are you taking?”
“The reason and principle of rotating the circle, and the types of formulas that can be learned and mastered according to the stage of each circle. You only learn the theory, and you don’t get to practice.”
“⋯.”
“You want to do it, right? You’re so drawn to it, right? You’re curious, right?”
“⋯Hmm.”
“You can only learn this at the Cerberus Academy. When else would you hear something like this? Don’t you think it would be really useful when sparring with a wizard? When I become a great wizard, you’ll have to fight me too.”
He chattered a lot. In the end, he nodded and let out a hollow laugh.
“Yes, I will.”
Ivan, who was watching from the side, clicked his tongue and asked,
“Is it really your dream to become a magician?”
“That’s not it… I’m concerned that the nature of mana and aura are similar yet different. I think it will help me reach the next level.”
Jenny, who had been watching the situation, whined in regret, and Damien added a playful jeer.
“Ahhh~! That’s too much! We can’t hear you!”
“This is an outrage, an outrage. I protest this seriously.”
“I should have learned some magic in advance.”
“What?”
A roar of laughter erupted. I laughed too. I thought to myself that it was a good idea to keep the wizard close by.
While looking at the children’s schedules together, I interjected my thoughts here and there on how they should study for exams and when they should meet to do their homework.
* * *
The first Monday in February.
As soon as I entered the classroom, Professor Angela Sting stared at me for a long time before I could even say hello. She covered her facial expression with the flyer she was holding, then stuck her head out again.
A faint smile appeared on her face. Feeling awkward and embarrassed for no reason, I also smiled quietly.
Some of the children who filled the classroom muffled their laughter with coughs.
“⋯Ahh. Really⋯ It’s been a long time⋯. Ernhard Youngsik⋯.”
“Yes, Professor. I will work hard.”
“Uhhh… It’s been a while since I’ve seen you… It’s really nice to see you… It’s really… It’s a joy to see the students of the swordsmanship club showing such enthusiasm for my class.”
“thank you.”
“⋯.”
⋯Is this the right class for me to take?
The professor’s reaction was so suspicious that I looked back at Marianne sitting next to me, but the child kept smiling brightly. I decided to believe the shape of her mouth when she said, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”
Angela Sting, who had been looking back and forth between the blackboard and the flyers for a while, calmly sat down in front of the podium.
Angela Sting snapped her thumb and index finger together and a flyer appeared on the desk. She was delighted by the new technology she had experienced for the first time in a long time.
“Then first… let’s learn about the concept of circles…?”
I opened my notebook and picked up a pen.
The circle was a concentric circle drawn with the center at the center, that is, the heart.
All magic was activated by drawing mana from afar, drawing concentric circles around the heart as the axis, infusing mana into the formula drawn with the fingertips, and then releasing it out of the body through the circles.
I just did it without thinking because I was told to do it that way, but now I know why.
“⋯Mana that has been used like this once, unlike pure mana, has its properties changed and become repulsive⋯. Mana that has its properties changed like this is called tainted mana⋯.”
Professor Angela Sting floated a blue human figure. Green smoke entered the person’s chest, circled around, went to both arms, then turned red and returned to the chest, spinning around.
“⋯This polluted mana goes through a reverse conversion process to return to nature, but if this process is handled incorrectly, mana reflux occurs⋯. In order to carry out the reverse conversion process outside the body, we practice sending mana far away⋯.”
If you use water to wash clothes, you should not keep the dirty lye water and throw it away on time. The explanation that followed in a calm voice was detailed and affectionate, making it easy to understand the meaning.
In addition, I learned about the structural principles of the circle and how each stage of the circle corresponds to a certain level of swordsmanship.
Magic was a discipline that could be used after sufficient study and training to be able to see the immaterial world. It immediately becomes the 1st circle upon starting, which is equivalent to the level of a third-rate warrior.
The 2nd circle was the level of a second-rate warrior, while the 3rd and 4th circles were the same as a first-rate warrior. The 5th circle was the highest level of sword expert, like Edwin Kiadris, who had sparred with me, in other words, the pinnacle, and the 6th circle was the same level as a sword master, so it was the pinnacle.
I remembered hearing throughout the first grade that Marianne was a master of the first circle and a beginner of the second circle. Out of curiosity, I asked her in writing what her current status was, and she smiled and wrote the number 3.
3rd Circle? It was said that he had become a first-class warrior in the meantime. I nodded my head in admiration at the guy who was boasting that he had memorized the 4th Circle magic formula. I was very pleased to learn that Marianne had been cultivating magic more diligently and consistently than I had thought.
I learned about each stage of the circle in detail and heard explanations about the structure and principles of the circle. Some of it was vague and I knew it, while others I had experienced firsthand. The class was interesting and enjoyable.
But I was dumbfounded when Angela Sting handed me the printouts after my first class.
“⋯This is⋯.”
“This is your graduating year, so… I can’t let you off like before… I wish you had memorized these formulas in advance, Ernhard Youngsik…”
“⋯Yes. Thank you.”
I received the printout calmly.
It was full of things like Opzionon that I had briefly seen before, but now I couldn’t even remember. I ended up watching Professor Angela’s back for a long time as she smiled faintly and left.
Are you telling me to memorize a thousand words?
Marianne smiled brightly as she looked at the printouts I was holding next to her.
“Oh, there are really only really basic words. Words at the level of 2nd circle or lower have three or fewer periods, so they are relatively easy to pronounce and memorize. Don’t worry, you’ll get it in no time.”
“⋯.”
I tried hard to resist the urge to pinch his arm and scold him like he always did to me.
It seems like a long time ago that I was glad that I had almost no exams this semester.
