Naruto: Chill of Eternity

Chapter 40: Shark

Leaning against a sturdy oak, Nyx removed her cloak, the dark fabric falling away to reveal a more combat-ready outfit underneath—something more fitting for the battles that awaited her. As she ran a hand through her hair, a rustle in the bushes caught her attention.

Without a moment's pause, she turned sharply, her Kōrimeigan flaring to life as she stared into the darkness. Her eyes, cold as ever, scanned the surroundings for any sign of a threat. A figure stepped forward, and she relaxed just slightly when she recognized the person.

"Leaving already?" Konan's voice carried a hint of concern. She stepped out from the shadows, her blue hair catching the moonlight as she approached. "I thought you'd at least wait until morning."

Nyx's expression softened, though only slightly. "What's the point of waiting? The decision has been made." She gestured back towards the base, her tone dismissive. "There's nothing left for me there."

Konan crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on Nyx. "So you're just going to walk away? Disappear into the night like a ghost? That's not the Nyx I know."

Nyx's lips curved into a faint smirk. "Who says I'm disappearing? I'm making my presence known—just not where they expect it."

Konan took another step closer, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "And where do you expect to go? Do you really think the rest of the Akatsuki will just let you walk away without consequence?"

"Let them come," Nyx replied, her eyes glinting with a dangerous light. "If they think I'm an easy target, then they're in for a rude awakening. I'll remind them why they recruited me in the first place."

Konan's eyes narrowed as she studied Nyx's face. There was a coldness there, an edge she had seen only a few times before—usually when Nyx was about to do something reckless. "And what if I tried to stop you?" Konan asked, her tone challenging, though there was a softness underneath it.

Nyx shook her head. "You won't," she said, her voice quiet but certain. "Because you know that I'm right."

The two of them stood in silence for a moment, the tension palpable in the air. Then, without another word, Nyx turned and started walking deeper into the forest, the frost forming more thickly on the ground with each step. As she moved further away from the Akatsuki, a faint whisper seemed to follow her—perhaps the first murmurs of the storm she was about to unleash.

Konan watched her go, a mix of emotions swirling within her chest. She knew that this was the end of one chapter, but she could not shake the feeling that it was also the beginning of something far more dangerous.

And perhaps, she thought, it was not the last time she would see Nyx.

Nyx ventured deeper into the forest, her steps deliberate and unhurried, though each footfall left an icy impression on the earth. She could still feel the weight of Konan's gaze on her back, the unspoken words that hung in the air between them, but she did not turn around. There was no time for hesitation, not when the path ahead demanded her full attention.

The further she walked, the darker the forest became, the moonlight swallowed by the dense canopy of trees overhead. It reminded her of the times she would traverse unfamiliar lands on missions—shrouded in darkness, always on the edge of danger. Except now, the danger came from every direction, and she was both the hunter and the hunted.

She reached a small clearing surrounded by tall pines. Pausing, Nyx glanced up at the moon, her breath misting in the air. Memories of the Akatsuki swirled in her mind—battles fought together, missions carried out with ruthless efficiency, and fleeting moments of camaraderie that almost made the darkness bearable. Almost.

But those days were over. Her choice was made, and now she would carve her own path, free of any chains, even if it meant becoming an enemy to those she once worked alongside. The world outside of the Akatsuki held no certainties, but she had never been one to shy away from a challenge.

As she considered her next move, she sensed a flicker of movement behind her. Without turning, she let out a low, icy breath. "You've been following me since I left the hideout," she said, her voice calm but edged with warning. "Show yourself."

A figure emerged from the shadows—a man wrapped in a dark cloak, his features obscured by the hood that hung low over his face. "I wondered how long it would take for you to notice," he said, his voice laced with amusement. He pulled back the hood to reveal a familiar face—Kisame Hoshigaki, his shark-like grin widening as he met her gaze.

"Kisame," Nyx acknowledged, her expression unreadable. "Why are you here? Are you planning to stop me?"

"Stop you?" Kisame let out a low chuckle. "No, no. If anything, I'm here to watch. It's not every day someone declares war on the Akatsuki and actually plans to survive it." His gaze flickered over her, sizing her up. "I suppose I just wanted to see if you're as strong as you think you are."

Nyx's Kōrimeigan flickered with a cold light as she met his gaze. "And if I'm not?"

Kisame shrugged, his grin never fading. "Then I suppose you'll die, and the rest of us will be spared the trouble of hunting you down." He took a step closer, the air around them seeming to grow heavier with tension. "But if you are as dangerous as I suspect… well, then things are about to get very interesting."

Nyx didn't flinch under his scrutiny. "You'll find out soon enough," she replied, her voice steady. "But I'm not here to entertain your curiosity, Kisame. Either step aside or make your move."

Kisame raised an eyebrow, but after a moment, he gave a small nod. "Fair enough." He turned away, glancing over his shoulder one last time. "I'll be watching, Nyx. If you survive long enough, we might just have to settle things between us one day."

"What if I decided I wanted to end you right here? It'll save me the troubles." Nyx said.

Kisame's grin widened, revealing his sharp teeth in a feral display. "Now that's the spirit," he said, his voice deepening with excitement. "You could try, but I doubt it would be as easy as you think. Besides," he continued, his hand drifting casually to the hilt of Samehada on his back, "you might find that ending me would be a lot more trouble than it's worth."

Nyx's gaze remained steady, her Kōrimeigan still glowing with cold intensity. "Then I suppose I'd get to see if you're all talk," she replied, her tone calm but laced with a challenge. "After all, I've already cut down bigger threats than you."

Kisame's eyes flashed with amusement. "Is that so? I'd almost be disappointed if you didn't at least try," he taunted, his grip tightening slightly on Samehada's handle. The tension between them thickened, the air heavy with anticipation. For a moment, it seemed as though the silence might erupt into a clash of ice and steel.

But then, Nyx relaxed her stance, her icy demeanor unyielding as she pulled out her short blade. "Let's get to it then, Kisame."

Kisame's grin widened even further, and his eyes gleamed with anticipation. "Well, well, you're a braver one than I thought," he said, drawing Samehada from his back with a heavy rasp of metal and scale. The massive, bandaged sword seemed to pulse in his hands, as though sensing the impending conflict. "You might just make this interesting."

Nyx's grip on her short blade tightened, the frost that perpetually clung to its surface growing thicker, the air around her plunging in temperature. "I don't intend to make it interesting," she replied coldly. "I intend to end it quickly."

In an instant, she surged forward, her blade flashing in the moonlight as she aimed a strike directly at Kisame's midsection. Her Kōrimeigan flared to life, and frost exploded outward from the ground beneath her, ice spreading across the earth like a network of veins. The icy tendrils rushed toward Kisame, seeking to encase him where he stood.

Kisame swung Samehada with casual ease, the massive weapon tearing through the encroaching frost as it moved to intercept Nyx's strike. The blades met with a resounding clash, the force of the impact sending a shockwave through the air. Samehada's scales quivered, eagerly absorbing the chakra-infused cold radiating from Nyx's sword, but the frost continued to creep up its length, trying to bind it in place.

"So that's your game, huh?" Kisame said, his voice filled with a mix of amusement and approval. "You're not just playing with ice—you're trying to freeze me solid."

Nyx didn't respond with words; instead, she twisted her blade, channeling more of her chakra into the strike. The frost thickened, spreading from their point of contact and forcing Kisame to exert more strength to resist the encroaching ice. The ground around them had already become a frozen battlefield, the once-damp earth transformed into slick, treacherous terrain. Each of Nyx's steps left a deeper layer of frost, while Kisame's bare feet crunched through the ice, sending cracks racing across the surface.

With a sudden burst of chakra, Kisame broke the stalemate, shoving Nyx back with a mighty swing of Samehada. "Not bad," he admitted, his grin still firmly in place. "But if you think that little blade of yours is enough to bring me down, you're gonna have to do better."

Nyx slid back effortlessly across the frozen ground, using the momentum to put distance between them. She raised her blade again, its edge gleaming in the pale light, as frost continued to seep from her every pore. "I wasn't trying to bring you down," she said, her voice even as the mist of her breath hung in the air. "I was just testing how much of a fight you'd put up."

Kisame let out a low, rumbling laugh, hefting Samehada over his shoulder. "Then let me show you a real fight, Nyx." He leapt toward her, swinging the sword in a wide arc aimed to cleave through ice and flesh alike.

Nyx's Kōrimeigan swirled, and in the blink of an eye, she sidestepped his attack, leaving behind an afterimage of herself formed from ice. As Kisame's strike shattered the frozen decoy, she reappeared at his flank, thrusting her blade towards his exposed ribs. But Kisame's reflexes were sharp—Samehada whipped around to parry her strike, and the monstrous weapon once again devoured the cold chakra coursing through her blade.

"Your tricks aren't bad," Kisame remarked as he rotated his stance to face her head-on, "but they won't be enough to beat someone like me. If you're not careful, you might end up feeding Samehada all your chakra."

Nyx's eyes narrowed. "We'll see who runs out of energy first." She exhaled sharply, and the temperature around them dropped even further as she activated a technique, Frozen Dominion. The entire battlefield slowed, an almost imperceptible chill seeping into Kisame's movements, causing the flow of his chakra to feel sluggish. In contrast, Nyx seemed to glide effortlessly over the icy ground, her strikes growing swifter and sharper as she pressed her advantage.

Kisame's grin faded slightly as he felt the effects take hold. "You're trying to slow me down?" he growled, forcing his chakra to circulate harder in an attempt to counteract the chill. "Nice trick. But that won't work forever."

"It doesn't need to," Nyx replied, her blade cutting through the air like a shard of ice as she darted toward him once more. "I just need long enough to break you."

Kisame's laughter reverberated through the cold air as Nyx's Kōritsurugan flared to life. The transformation in her eyes was instantaneous, the once bright blue irises now morphed into a crystalline pattern, sharp and jagged like shards of glass. The whites of her eyes darkened to a stormy gray, giving her gaze a lethal intensity. The temperature around them plummeted further, the cold becoming suffocating as frost spread rapidly across the ground.

"Say your final goodbyes, Kisame," Nyx declared, her voice steady and low, carrying a chill that cut through the night air. "The sea of death accepts everyone."

The frost beneath Kisame's feet seemed to come alive, rising like an icy tide intent on swallowing him whole. The air around him grew dense, every breath a struggle as the freezing atmosphere drained the warmth from his body. Even Samehada shivered in his grasp, its scales prickling in discomfort as they resisted the cold energy seeping through.

Kisame's expression shifted, his grin thinning to a determined scowl. "Nice trick," he growled, forcing his chakra to surge through his limbs. "But don't think a little frost is enough to scare me off."

Without hesitation, he channeled his chakra into Samehada, swinging the blade down with immense force, aiming to smash through the icy tide and disrupt Nyx's control over the battlefield. As the massive sword crashed against the ground, it devoured the chakra-infused frost, creating a momentary reprieve in the advancing cold.

But Nyx was already moving, her figure blurring as she darted forward, using the frozen terrain to her advantage. Her movements were swift, almost graceful, as she closed the distance between them. With her Kōritsurugan active, she could see the flow of chakra within Kisame's body, the pulsating energy circulating through his limbs like rivers of light. She targeted those currents with her strikes, aiming to interrupt his chakra flow and weaken his defenses.

"Ice-bound Fate," she whispered, as chains of frost emerged from the ground, wrapping around Kisame's arms and legs. The ice formed tight, chilling restraints, anchoring him in place as it crept up his body. The chilling chains seemed to drain the strength from his limbs, forcing him to fight not just against Nyx but against the very ground beneath him.

Kisame snarled in defiance, flexing his muscles as he struggled against the icy restraints. "You think a few frozen chains are enough to bind me?" His chakra surged, muscles straining as the ice cracked and splintered beneath the force of his will. With a ferocious yell, he shattered the chains encasing him, sending shards of ice flying in every direction.

Nyx didn't flinch as the frozen debris scattered around her, her expression remaining calm and calculating. "I expected nothing less from you, Kisame," she said. "But you're still underestimating what you're facing."

With a single gesture, she unleashed her next technique, Eternal Frost. The air itself seemed to freeze, the temperature dropping to an almost unbearable level. The moisture in the air crystallized instantly, creating a shimmering mist of frost particles that hung suspended in the air. It was a sight of otherworldly beauty—and a harbinger of death.

The icy mist encircled Kisame, enveloping him in a freezing vortex that slowed his movements further, the biting cold piercing even through his dense chakra. The ground around him was now a solid sheet of ice, and the cold seemed to seep into his very bones.

Kisame's breath fogged in front of him, his movements sluggish as he fought against the creeping numbness. "You're a real piece of work, Nyx," he admitted, his voice strained. "But this kind of cold… it doesn't suit me." He gripped Samehada tightly, the blade thrumming with energy as it absorbed the remnants of chakra lingering in the air.

Nyx's eyes gleamed with an almost dangerous light. "Then I'll make it your grave," she replied, her voice as frigid as the air surrounding them.

She lunged forward, her blade a streak of silver, the ice beneath her feet propelling her with incredible speed. Her Kōritsurugan locked onto Kisame's vital chakra points, her strikes aimed to paralyze his limbs and disrupt his chakra flow. The first strike came within inches of his torso when Kisame moved, his instincts and battle-hardened reflexes saving him from a direct hit.

The clash that followed was fierce, each blow met with a parry as the two combatants exchanged strikes at a blistering pace. The icy mist swirled around them like a blizzard, masking Nyx's movements as she danced around Kisame's larger frame, searching for an opening to land a decisive blow. She was like a phantom in the cold, always just out of reach.

But Kisame was not one to be outdone. With a mighty swing, he unleashed a burst of chakra that dispersed the icy mist, clearing his line of sight. "I've had enough of your tricks!" he roared, swinging Samehada with all his strength.

Nyx slid to the side, evading the massive blade by a hair's breadth. She could feel the sheer power behind Kisame's attack, and she knew that the next move would decide the outcome. Her eyes narrowed, focusing intently on his chakra flow, searching for the perfect moment to strike.

The opportunity came in a heartbeat. With a flicker of movement, she was behind him, her blade poised to pierce his spine. "Goodbye, Kisame," she murmured, her voice a breath of cold wind.

But before she could land the finishing blow, Kisame's chakra flared violently, and Samehada twisted in his grip, moving to intercept Nyx's blade. The two weapons met in a final, deafening clash, the force of their collision sending a shockwave through the air.

For a moment, it seemed as though the world itself held its breath. Then, the ice cracked beneath them, and the frost-covered battlefield began to crumble away. Nyx's gaze met Kisame's, and in that instant, both fighters knew the fight was far from over.
