Chapter 29: Between Pride and Sadness
The sun barely peeked over the horizon, wrapping the house in a soft golden light. In his room, Naruto woke up with a start. He had spent the night studying fuinjutsu scrolls and had fallen asleep with his head resting on a pile of papers. A dull ache in his neck reminded him he hadn't moved in hours.
"Damn…" he muttered, sitting up. His eyes fell on the scattered scrolls around him, scribbled with symbols and incomplete lines. "It's not perfect, but I'm making progress…"
He quickly packed his things, glanced at the mirror to see his hair was a mess, and headed out to meet Akane.
When he arrived in the courtyard, she was already there, arms crossed, a look of mild amusement and annoyance on her face.
"Well, you actually got up on your own today. I'm impressed."
Naruto groaned, pretending to be offended.
"Hey! I was probably up before you!"
Akane raised an eyebrow with a smirk.
"Maybe, but you still look like a groggy kid. Here, catch this."
She tossed him a training staff, which he caught mid-air.
"Show me what you learned yesterday. And don't expect a break today, Naruto. On the battlefield, no one gives you time to rest."
Naruto gripped the staff tightly, determined.
"Don't worry, I'll show you what I'm worth!"
The sparring session began in the courtyard, Akane's swift movements immediately putting Naruto to the test. She was relentless, giving him no openings. Naruto countered with everything he had learned, but she always stayed one step ahead.
"Too slow, Naruto!" she teased as she dodged an attack.
"Stop saying that all the time!" he snapped in frustration.
He attempted a feint, but she anticipated it and disarmed him in an instant. The staff clattered to the ground, and Naruto groaned, rubbing his wrist.
"See? That's what I mean: too slow. But you've made progress."
Despite the sting of defeat, Naruto flashed a proud smile.
"Don't worry. One day, I'll beat you!"
---
After an hour of training, they returned inside for their daily fuinjutsu lesson. Naruto sat across from Akane, but before she started, he raised his hand, a serious look in his eyes.
"Akane, I need to ask you something."
She stared at him, intrigued.
"What is it?"
Naruto took a deep breath.
"I want to send a message to Konoha. Just to let them know I'm okay. They must be worried... Kakashi-sensei, Sakura… even Tsunade. I can't leave them in the dark like this."
Akane furrowed her brows slightly before shaking her head.
"No."
Naruto's eyes widened.
"What? Why not?"
She crossed her arms and replied calmly:
"Because it's not the right time. If you contact Konoha now, they'll come looking for you. And you'll go back there without truly progressing. Everything you're doing here will have been for nothing."
Naruto felt frustration rising in him.
"But they're worried about me! I can't just disappear like that—it's selfish!"
Akane stared at him for a long moment, her gaze cold but resolute.
"Listen, Naruto. I understand that you're worried about them. But ask yourself the real question: what's truly selfish? Leaving to become stronger and protect them in the future, or giving in to your emotions now and returning empty-handed?"
Naruto lowered his eyes, clenching his fists.
"It's not that simple…" he murmured.
A tense silence settled between them. Akane eventually sighed, softening her tone slightly.
"You want to protect Konoha, don't you? Then trust me. Focus on your training. When the time is right, you'll show them just how much you've changed."
Naruto thought for a moment before raising his eyes, a glimmer of resignation in them.
"Alright… but I'll find a way to tell them later."
Akane nodded.
"That's all I ask. Now, let's get to the lesson."
Setting aside the conversation, Akane resumed her role as a teacher. She explained the basics of seals, emphasizing their importance in battle and their versatility.
"Fuinjutsu, Naruto, isn't just an art. It's an extension of your mind. The best seals aren't necessarily the most complex, but those crafted with precision and creativity."
Naruto scribbled furiously on a scroll, trying to keep up with her explanations.
"And don't forget," she continued, "that seals can be weapons, but also tools of protection. Your clan, the Uzumaki, was renowned for this duality. That's why they were feared… and why they were destroyed."
Naruto froze, the brush suspended above the scroll.
"My clan… they were wiped out because of this… It's so sad when I think about it," he sighed.
Akane looked at him intently before nodding slowly.
"Yes. They were too powerful, too dangerous. But their legacy lives on, in you. And I believe you're capable of honoring that legacy."
Naruto gripped the brush tightly, a mix of pride and sadness in his heart.
"I want to know more about them… about my mother."
Akane gave him a warm smile.
"Keep working hard, and you'll understand. One day, you'll be proud to belong to this clan."
---
By the end of the day, Naruto felt exhausted, but he couldn't deny he had made progress. As he returned to his room, he promised himself he wouldn't give up, no matter the challenges.
"No matter how hard it gets… I'll keep going. I have to get stronger, no matter what," he murmured before falling asleep.
