Chapter 110: Chapter 110: Corruption
In Mangrove Area No. 66 in Sabaody.
Near the massive Mangrove Tree No. 66 stands a silver-colored building complex, said to be a naval base, but its level of luxury rivals that of royal palaces.
An atmosphere of opulence and grandeur emanates from this naval base everywhere. Even the two large open gates are coated with a layer of golden paint, making them appear exceptionally extravagant.
If someone who had never witnessed the world before saw this place, they would believe it to be the actual headquarters of the Navy.
In front of the base's gate, two massive navy soldiers stand informally.
Their huge bodies made the navy uniforms appear more layered and voluminous.
On the wide road between the golden-painted gates of the base, soldiers carry boxes, constantly entering and exiting.
Occasionally, elegantly decorated carriages pass by, entering the base.
From the commander's office on the third floor of the base, a deep, vibrant laugh echoes. "Hahaha, oh Heavenly Dragon, you've been so generous; I didn't expect you to still remember this little person. Truly, it's an honor for me, I'm Lawrence."
Lawrence, the Vice Admiral of Base No. 66, was a massive bearded man, sitting behind a desk in a luxurious leather chair, a lavish cigar embellished with golden threads in his mouth. He was chatting and laughing with Berkeley, the captain from the famous auction house.
From the wide smiles on their faces, it was evident that the conversation was going exceptionally well.
Berkeley was a middle-aged man wearing a floral shirt and heart-shaped glasses. At that moment, he was presenting the gifts he brought: five boxes filled with cash.
"Vice Admiral Lawrence, you are too modest. If navy leaders like you consider themselves small figures, I would truly feel embarrassed."
Berkeley pointed to the boxes in front of him and said, "Little sir knows that Vice Admiral Lawrence does not like dirty money, so he asked us to always bring you new cash. This currency has been exchanged from the bank since early morning, amounting to five billion Berries."
Lawrence laughed and said, "Hahaha, you've taken good care of the matter. Dirty money indeed spoils my mood."
Then Lawrence stood up from his chair, approached the boxes filled with cash, and took a bundle of bills, holding it under his nose to inhale its scent. Instantly, expressions of delight appeared on his face.
"Yes, this money that still carries the fragrance of ink is what attracts the attention of the great."
With a satisfied smile on his face, he pointed to a box of cigars on his desk and said, "But honestly, what I loved more than the money is the cigar sent to me by the Heavenly Dragon. It's a high-quality royal cigar from Dressrosa; even if you have money, it's hard to obtain."
Berkeley smiled and said, "If you love cigars, I will ask Dressrosa to send more."
He then stood up and shook Lawrence's large hand, saying, "Well, regarding the upcoming slave auction, we would like to request Vice Admiral Lawrence to take responsibility for maintaining order to ensure there is no chaos. This auction will be significant, and it may be attended by the world nobles, so security must be extremely tight."
Lawrence said seriously, "Of course. We in the Navy have a strong alliance with the Shichibukai, and protecting the world nobles is part of our core duty."
Then he smiled and said, "But, Berkeley, remember, this is not a slave auction; it's just a professional recruitment office!"
Berkeley froze for a moment and then burst into laughter.
"Hahaha, yes, yes, I misspoke. Not a slave auction, but a professional recruitment office."
Lawrence laughed as he bid farewell to Berkeley, but soon the smile faded from his face, and he shouted, "Guards!"
"Yes, Vice Admiral Lawrence!"
Four strong soldiers entered.
Lawrence pointed to the five large boxes in his office and said, "Take three of these boxes to World Government Building No. 69. Move one box to my personal vault. As for the remaining box, take it and distribute it among the brothers. You must put in extra effort in the coming days to maintain security on Sabaody Island; no mistakes must occur in my jurisdiction when the world nobles visit."
"Understood! Thank you, Vice Admiral!"
The soldiers responded with clear joy.
Lawrence, with a frown, asked, "What about those supernovas who have landed in Sabaody? Have they caused any trouble so far?"
The soldier replied, "So far, we haven't seen any major disturbances, just some minor skirmishes between pirates."
"The DeKalb brothers have been spending their time in the Bubble Park, eating and drinking without going anywhere."
"As for Pameer, he is busy building his ship in the shipyard, and he seems to have attracted some slave-catching gangs because he's a giant."
"The Avenger Aristo is in Red Tree Area No. 1; he might be waiting for the weekly auction to begin."
"And his brother Davilons seems to be looking for a suitable weapon."
Lawrence ordered seriously, "Keep a close watch on them! Don't let those damned pirates get anywhere near the noble world. If anything unusual happens, contact the Navy Headquarters immediately."
Then Lawrence picked up a bounty notice, pointing at a man with a scar on his forehead.
"Especially the Avenger Aristo and his brother Davilons. These two are the highest bounty supernovas in recent years."
"Since they went to sea, they have attacked eleven naval bases, killing thousands of soldiers and civilians. They seem to harbor a deep grudge against the Navy."
Fear appeared on the faces of the four soldiers.
Lawrence chuckled lightly and said, "There's no need to worry too much. When Aristo and his brother landed in Sabaody, I already notified Marineford. They have probably already sent fighters to deal with them. You just need to keep an eye on them."
After the soldiers left, Lawrence picked up the cigar box and walked out of his office, smoking, before entering the adjacent room.
When he opened the door, a wide smile appeared on his face. "My darlings, did you miss me after an hour of absence?"
The room contained a hot spring pool with steam rising from it.
More than ten girls of different ethnicities, barely clothed, were enjoying the hot water.
Upon seeing Lawrence, the previously dull expressions of the girls instantly changed to seductive smiles as they rushed towards him.
One of them said, "Vice Admiral, you took too long; we were almost about to swell from soaking in the hot spring."
Lawrence's breaths became heavier as he grabbed one of the long-legged girls and said, "Really? Let me see, where have you swollen?"
About four or five kilometers away from Base 66, under Red Tree No. 39, Rorschach suddenly stopped walking.
"Why did you stop, Rorschach?"
"No need to go."
Rorschach's eyes sparkled with electricity, and his gaze turned icy cold.
