Chapter 31: 31. Reinforcements
"We… we won?"
Smoker looked at the smoke-filled ship, hardly able to believe it.
But the figure striding out of the wreckage told him everything.
No wonder this guy had a bounty in the hundreds of millions. Whatever else he lacked, his endurance was remarkable.
"Looks like I underestimated you."
Mossy's body was now covered in dense black fur, and his limbs had transformed into sharp claws.
The Zoan Devil Fruit, the Bear-Bear Fruit.
Before the words left his mouth, he leaped, hanging upside down from the mast like an overly nimble black bear.
Then, he lunged down.
Pushing off the mast to gain momentum, Mossy's massive form shot forward like a coiled spring, transforming into a menacing black blur, far too fast for any ordinary person to react.
But it was unfortunate for him that he wasn't facing an ordinary person.
Marsh vanished, and as Mossy lunged toward where he'd been standing, he could almost feel the his calm breath. In the next moment, Mossy met nothing but the ragged deck, slamming into it with enough force to leave a massive hole.
At the same moment, Marsh was behind him, bamboo staff poised as he swung down toward Mossy's neck.
A clean cut, slicing flesh and bone with a thunderous crack!
Knowing he couldn't dodge, Mossy lurched forward, letting his back absorb the blow.
His tough, dense fur absorbed some of the sword's energy, preventing him from being completely sliced in two.
"Do you cling to life this desperately because you're a pirate? Did you ever think about the lives of those who died by your blade and might have just wanted to live, too?" Marsh pressed his foot onto Mossy's head, raising his bamboo blade high.
"You think you can lecture me, kid? You're still green!" Mossy's voice shook from pain, but his brutality remained undiminished.
"No lecture." Marsh said flatly. "Just deciding whether to kill you."
Mossy froze, and in that instant, the still-sheathed bamboo blade descended.
Mossy growled, swinging his left arm back. But Marsh ducked and caught the speeding clawed limb with his left hand.
Then he pressed down hard with his right foot, which was planted on Mossy's back.
A loud crack sounded as Marsh's weight slammed down on Mossy.
Blood splattered.
Mossy couldn't hold on any longer. His remaining left arm was severed, and his internal organs shattered under Marsh's crushing foot.
Under the power of the Bear-Bear Fruit, his seemingly invincible fur was like paper before this kid.
"I'm not here to lecture you. I only know that you're a pirate, and I'm a Marine." Marsh said coldly. "Between us, only one of us gets to live. If I hadn't come here today, not a single soul from this fleet would be left alive."
No mercy, no sympathy, only cold resolve.
If someone was prepared to kill, they should be ready to be killed in return.
At that moment, the sound of multiple cannon shots rang out from the nearby sea.
"Reinforcements! Reinforcements are here!"
From the lookout post, Marlin shouted joyfully.
A dozen warships were sailing toward them!
"Reinforcements? Which fleet?"
Smoker called out urgently.
Squinting, Martin saw the flagship approaching fast, bearing a massive dog's head holding a bone at the prow.
Only one person in the Navy had a ship like that.
"It's Garp! Vice Admiral Garp!"
Everyone on board was stunned.
In that instant, the thunderous sound of cannon fire grew louder.
A sea of white battleships closed in, and at the bow stood a middle-aged man.
Tall, broad-chested, and heavily muscled.
His blue eyes held a fierce gaze, with a scar over his left eye, and his black hair spiked upwards.
It was none other than Vice Admiral Garp, who had recently joined Admiral Sengoku to defeat the Shiki at Marineford.
Marsh halted his attack on Mossy, peering curiously at the massive approaching ship.
In the original story, Garp, as Luffy's grandfather, won over fans with his quirky personality and absolute strength.
However, due to the story's timeline, the Garp of the original series was well past his prime.
Many of his feats could only be pieced together through recollections or written records.
Now, with the chance to witness the Hero of the Navy in his prime, how could Marsh not be curious?
And as expected, the towering figure on the dog-headed warship didn't wait for it to get any closer before hurling a cannonball larger than most people.
Then, he leapt onto the cannonball itself, riding it toward the Black Vulture Pirates' flagship, crashing down like a meteor.
