Chapter 44: 44. The Plot Unfolds
"Where did you come from?"
The man in the black suit, a high-ranking Navy officer, tilted his head, signaled for his subordinate to light a cigar for him, and looked at Marsh with a raised chin.
Only officers ranked Commodore or above are allowed to wear casual attire.
Marsh stood at attention, saluting and saying loudly, "Marine Headquarters Lieutenant, Marsh."
Hearing this, the officer nodded, "I'm Rear Admiral Blake from Headquarters. You're here for that, aren't you?"
That?
Marsh instantly understood and replied, "Yes, I am."
"Then where's your ship?" Blake looked past him, obviously aware of the first test for the training camp.
"Reporting, sir! I swam here, without a ship."
"Swam from Marineford?" Upon hearing this, not only Blake, but everyone around looked stunned.
He swam that distance all the way here?!
"Hahahaha, impressive!" Blake burst into laughter, "Back in the day, I got an arm broken just trying to grab a ship. Why didn't I think of just swimming over?"
"Since you're here, you've passed the first test. You can go report directly."
He waved Marsh off, indicating he could leave.
Marsh hesitated for a moment and asked, "Rear Admiral, and here...?"
"I'll handle it." Blake said nonchalantly, flicking the ash off his cigar.
"Then, may I ask, sir, how do you plan to handle it?" Marsh narrowed his eyes and continued to ask.
Clang!
At that moment, the Marines behind Blake drew their swords, glaring at Marsh.
Blake also shifted his gaze back to Marsh, sizing him up again.
"What do you think... I should do about it?"
Marsh, who had seen all the recent updates, understood well that in some ways, there wasn't much difference between the Navy and the pirates.
Pirates believe in strength, without it, one would inevitably be swallowed by the vast seas.
The Navy operates similarly.
Maybe you have power and influence and can rise through the ranks. But you'll never make it above a certain level without the strength to back it up.
During the world conscription period, why were Fujitora and Ryokugyu directly promoted to Admirals, surpassing the highly experienced Vice Admirals Momousagi and Chaton?
Because those at the top recognized their strength.
The Navy is even more complex than the pirates, as there are factions within its ranks.
Why did Zephyr, who had nurtured so much talent for the Navy, end up ambushed by pirates, losing everything and becoming disheartened?
Why could the pirate who killed his family be given the title of Shichibukai?
Who's to say that it wasn't because the high command, or even the World Government, feared Zephyr's influence within the Navy?
And why, after Sengoku stepped down, were only Akainu and Aokiji considered for the role of Fleet Admiral and not Kizaru?
Besides Kizaru's own lack of ambition, the absence of factional support was also a crucial factor.
The Hawk Faction behind Akainu, the Dove Faction behind Aokiji, these were the power bases that allowed them to compete for the Fleet Admiral position!
"When the Navy encounters pirates, it can't let them go." Marsh answered Blake directly.
"Hmm…" Blake touched his chin, his expression darkening.
After a long pause, he extended his hand.
Marsh's heart tightened, and his right hand moved towards his sword.
Slap!
Blake suddenly smacked his subordinate on the head. "Didn't you hear what Lieutenant Marsh said? Arrest all these pirates!"
"Huh?" The soldier blinked, then turned and shouted, "Get them all!"
"Wait!" The pirate captain panicked immediately. "Rear Admiral Blake! This wasn't what we agreed on-"
Before he could finish, a wine bottle smashed into his head!
Wine and blood flowed from his head.
"What agreement? Who promised you anything?" Blake sneered, tossing the broken bottle onto the unconscious captain.
So fast!
For a moment, Marsh didn't even see how Blake had crossed several meters in an instant.
Was it Geppo or Soru?!
If Blake had attacked him just now, could he have blocked it?
"Lieutenant Marsh, don't worry, not a single one of these pirates will escape. They'll all rot in Impel Down!"
Blake took a puff from his cigar, blowing a large smoke ring, eyeing Marsh with amusement.
"Yes, sir!" Though unsure of Blake's meaning, Marsh still saluted.
"Since you're heading to the training camp, how about leaving that girl behind with me?" Blake continued.
No wonder he acted so decisively against those pirates; he was waiting here for me all along!
So, the plot finally reveals itself!
